7 reasons why you should reduce your carbon footprint

Climate change is a huge issue that we are facing heavily in the 21st century. The planet is having more and more environmental catastrophes every year and it is because of the human species. Our world population is almost eight billion people and it is still growing but our planet cannot sustain that many people since everyone has such a huge carbon footprint. If we all work together to fight climate change we can create a good future for our children and if we do not act on it then we will have an inevitable extinction of the human race. Climate change will cause famine, flooding, crazy weather, forest fires and scorching temperatures. It all starts with you and here are seven ways you can reduce your carbon footprint.

1. Animal products are warming the planet

//

It's scientifically proven that meat and the huge amount of farm animals is damaging earth's climate by excessive amounts of carbon dioxide released into the atmosphere. I am guilty of using animal products but I am doing what I can to reduce it. Animals do not also produce just carbon dioxide, they also produce methane which is worse than carbon dioxide. The mass production of animals in farms is contributing to climate change the most out of anything else on the list since one cow produces as much carbon dioxide as five cars. Produce such as fruits and vegetables do not produce as much carbon dioxide as meat. Animals are by far the biggest contributor to greenhouse gasses.

2. Plastics are destroying ecosystems

There is so much plastic waste throughout the world that is slowly killing nature. As a result sea life is suffering greatly because a lot of sea creatures are eating plastic waste from humans and the animals are eating it. There are so many reasons why plastic is bad for the earth but there are ways for us to use less plastic. It is very simple to start using less plastic. Every single day we produce enough plastic water bottles that it circles the earth multiple times. Instead of buying bottled water, get a reusable bottle, buy steel silverware instead of plastic silverware and use cloth towels instead of paper towels.

3. Vehicles are toxic to the air

Having a car can be very expensive because of gas, insurance, repairs, etc. Not only that, owning a car is bad for the environment. For instance, in China the air there is so bad that people are wearing face masks to avoid inhaling it. Vehicles are a recent invention in the early 20th century and since then we have billions of vehicles around the globe but with so many vehicles there comes consequences for us. Vehicles on the road are contributing to climate change by releasing carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. Even electric cars are terrible for the environment since it takes a lot of carbon dioxide to make an electric car.

4. Wasting increases environmental toxins

Know those clothes you do not wear anymore? Donate them, do not throw them out. Or how about the food you throw out because it expires? Buy less groceries next time. Do you leave the light on in the house when you are not there? Wasted electricity. We tend to waste so much money and merchandise that we do not even realize it. We are destroying our planet just by wasting! Just simply stop wasting, not only do you stop wasting you end up saving money! If all of us were to stop wasting so much the planet wouldn't have as much trash. The trash is destroying wildlife and the environment and it is up to you to stop wasting.

5. Electronics use a lot of coal

What television, video games, cell phones and laptops all have in common are that they use electricity. Electricity is made by burning coal and other substances that are toxic to the environment. Almost everyone has an electronic device that they use and that includes myself and we do not realize how damaging it is to the environment. You can do something that doesn’t use electricity like bike riding, reading, art and writing. If you limit your electronic use you can reduce the amount of toxins that are released into the atmosphere.

6. We only have so much fresh water

There are over eight billion people on planet earth and not all of us have access to fresh water. There is only so much freshwater on earth but with our rising population we need more water to sustain life. Remember that half hour shower you took the other day? You should take only five minutes at max when taking a shower since that's all you need. Avoid using the dishwasher and manually clean your dishes. It takes only a couple of tips to use to stop using so much water and to help protect our freshwater supplies.

7. It is not taken seriously in society

Climate change is a national crisis that everyone should be aware of. For every post about climate change you are reducing not only your own but others' carbon footprint. Spread the word through social media, posters, schools, friends and family. Everyone needs to be more educated on how climate change is destroying the planet and it takes more than just you to reverse climate change. We need everyone to do their part to prevent it. If we do not act together to stop climate change we will suffer the dire consequences of our irresponsible usage of earth's resources.

Conclusion

As you can see there are quite a few reasons why global warming is a threat to humanity and we must do something about it. Climate change is a very controversial topic amongst us all and our current government is trying to take action by spreading the word on how you can help. There is so much scientific evidence that global warming is damaging this earth. Climate change will only keep getting worse unless everyone does their part in reducing their carbon footprint. We can make a difference in our world if we all start to reduce our carbon footprint.
