My path to become a police officer

The begging of my path.

After high school, I had a really important choice to make. In fact, I had to choose the right program for me. At the time, I wasn't sure about the job I wanted to do, and I had high hopes about playing professional hockey. Since I was a kid, the only two things that interested me was hockey and policing.

Choice 1 : Hockey

Choice 2 : Police

Hockey.

Hockey.

I started hockey when I was 3 years old. I have always been playing competitive hockey in high levels with hope to play professionally. I have performed in the best junior hockey Ligue, and I have won many titles with my teams. I have played in front off professional recruiter many times in my life, but my hockey career ended up at the age of 18 because of injuries. In fact, I did have too many concussions, and I personally decided to quit the sport even though I could continue. I didn't want to take any risks with my health.

Police.

After I quit hockey, even though I was upset and turn upside down, I needed to take a choice for my cegep program. For me, it was clear that I wanted to become a police officer, so I applied at Ahuntsic College. I succeed all the tests that were required. I was now admitted in Police Technology. As soon as I started my first week in this program, I knew it wasn’t going to be easy, but I knew I was in the right path. I also discovered that there were many places I could work and many work opportunities.

Choice 1 : Montreal Police Department.

Choice 2 : Quebec Provincial Police Department.

Choice 3 : How to become a police officer?

Police officers

Montreal Police Department.

For me, this police department is really interesting. In fact, it is really interesting for me because there are a lot of specialized teams, and there is a lot of action and criminals in the city. I have always wanted to be a member of a specialized team.

Choice 1 : SWAT

Choice 2 : K9

Choice 3 : Investigator

Choice 4 : Bomb squad

Choice 5 : Traffic unit

Choice 6 : Mounted police unit

Choice 7 : My top 3 ranking.

SPVM

SWAT.

The SWAT team is a special trained team in rescue and high risk intervention. To become a member of this team, you have to succeed difficult physical and psychological tests. It is none to be the hardest team to be on.

Quebec provincial police department.

This police department is, also really interesting for me. In fact, it is the biggest police department in Quebec and you have as much or more choice of careers and paths than the Montreal police department. They are known to have a huge territory to cover, and most of the time, they operate in rural areas.

The traffic unit is specialized in operation on the road. Sometimes the officer in this team can be in motorcycles, but they are usually in normal police cars. They often give contravention, but they also do high speed pursuits.

Mounted police unit.

In this unit, you can be mounted on motorcycles, ATVs, bicycles or horses. I personally will talk a little more about the officer who uses horses. This team makes sure to play a role in prevention and in huge violent crowd. The horses can more easily maneuver in a heavily-populated area, and they can intimidate and deter people.

Mounted police unit

My top 3 ranking.

Personally, my first choice is the SWAT team. My second choice would be the k9 unit, and my third choice would be the mounted police unit. To be in those units, you have to be a great employee. Also, you have to put a lot of leg work, and you have to be disciplined. You have to do on-the-job-training and learn the ropes of patrolling before applying in those types of unit. Yes, you have to work hard to be a member of those units, but you can have a lot of benefits.

How to become a police officer?

How can you become a police officer? Like I said, you have to apply in a cegep who offers the Police Technology program. After applying, you will have physical tests. If you succeed those tests, and you have an average over 84% in high school, you will be admitted in the program. You don’t need to get straight A’s, but you sure have to do well at school. The first week in the program is really important. In fact, it’s a test drive to know if you really belong to this world. The program is 3 years long. After finishing those 3 years of hard work, you will have to go to the national Quebec Police School for 6 months. After finishing those steps, you will be ready to integrate a police department. It sure is a long process, and it requires a good time management, but keep in mind that once you are engaged, you will have a good wage. In fact, the salary is higher than average, and you have a great pension when you retire from that job. Right now, I am the second year of the program, and I really love everything about it.
