A little introduction about me.
When I was in high school, I was already convinced that I would work in the health sector because I wanted to help other people, and to learn about the functioning of the body. At this time, I did not know that I would not like to be very close to the other people. I was so concentrated about taking care of others that I forgot that I did not like to be in the personal space of another person, and that I would have to see a lot of blood. I was very sad when I realized that, and I searched until I found speech therapy.

When I started college, I went in Nursing care because I was convinced that it would be perfect for me, but after a month, I realized it was not the good program. Then, I started to search for another field of study. After some weeks, I found the speech therapy program, but it was in university, so I had to find what program in college could lead me to that. I have signed up to Sciences and I did it in two years.

I always been an anxious person, so when I started college, it was very difficult. I was worried about all the homework and how I was going to make new friends. I was feeling late compared to others, because a lot of them were not in their first year. After some weeks, I started to understand how to manage college. Making new friends in my courses helped me to know the subject better because we could help each other. The amount of homework did not scare me, but the amount of reading that we had to do in a week scared me a lot. I had a Biology class, and we had about twenty pages to read each week. I found strategy to help me to be faster and to understand better what I was reading.

After I had my college diploma, I had to search for a university that I would like to go, so I chose the University of Montreal. I did three years to my bachelor's degree in Speech therapy. After that, I studied two years to have my master's degree in the same field. I was very good at my Biology and Chemestry courses. They were my favorites. I loved to learn how the body works, the things that can cause diseases and how to treat them. I also liked my Psychology class. I made some internships with the college at the hospital and at a rehabilitation center. It confirmed to me that I was in the right field of study, and it helped me to choose with which age group I wanted to work.

I liked university more than college because I was doing all the courses that I liked, and I met some people who were going to do the same job as me, so we could talk about it. I had more motivation because I liked what I was doing, and I was feeling that I was closer to my goal. I always have some difficulties working with other people at school, but at the university, I learned to trust the people I work with because the mix between ours ideas always make a better work.

During my three first years at the university, I had to do some internships. The first ones were in a primary school, but after you could choose where we wanted to do ours internships. I choose to do it at a rehabilitation center because I never went there, so I wanted to see if I could like that. I was so nervous because it was not just a simulation like we did in class. It was a real person with real problems. The first day, I wanted to be very effective, so the meetings were very short, and that is not what we wanted. In fact, we want to have a bond of trust with the person.

My first job was not related to my field of study. It was a dead-end job just to have enough money to pay my courses. I stayed in this job for about two years and a half. Then, I search for a job who was closer to the job I wanted to do in the future. It was difficult because I was still a student, I could not work full time. After some research, I found a job in a senior's residence that was to serve the seniors and take their order. You probably wonder what is the connection between this job and my program who is speech therapy. Briefly, you have the choice to work in pediatrics, geriatrics, rehabilitation or in school, so I chose to work with older people to see if I liked that. As a speech therapist in geriatrics, you help them with their memory problem. I was stressed because I never worked in restoration, and most of the people were speaking in English, and it was my first language. My one the job training was very fun because I visited the place, I learned the menu, I met some people, I tried my uniform and the employees were very nice to me.

I have always been good at French at school, and my Sciences, Biology and Chemestry courses were my favorites. I also wanted to work with other people. It was very important to me. I did a lot of quizzes to see in which program I should go, but it did not help me as I thought. When I started to read more about this job, I realized that it could be something that I would like to do.

I decided to work with seniors because when I was younger, I used to visit my grandmother at her retirement house, and I liked to talk with her, and his friends. In general, I am not very patient, but with them it was easy. I had the facility to start a conversation with them.

The first place where I worked after I finished my studies was a CHSLD, so I worked with seniors. The labor conditions were not very good, but the people were very nice. I was starting the day by reading the request from the doctor and after that, I prepared some activities to do with the people concerned. Then, I met them one by one. Most of the time, seniors are happy to see me mainly when they already saw me because I developed a trust relationship with them. Sometimes, there are some people who are a little bit scared mostly because they do not recognized me, and they have memory problems. I showed them some pictures, for example, their family, animals they liked or themselves when they were younger. It is easy for me to get attached to them even when they are angry.

My job at the moment is in a private residence where there are some seniors who are capable of living alone, but there is also a stage where the people are in lost of autonomy. I often work with this stage, but sometimes I have to see the others when they start to lose their memories. I really like this job because I work with the same team every day. The fact that the people are in the apartment helps me to make them feel comfortable, and it is easier for me to go see them. I can do some activities with all the people I see like playing with cards to help them with their memory.

The schedule changes depending where you work, but most of the jobs in speech therapy are a schedule day. My schedule is a five days per week nine to seventeen hours. I really like that. Sometimes, I have to work a little bit after my day because I have some research to make, but I enjoy doing it, so it is not a problem, and it is not always like that.

The speech therapy is a teamwork because you have to work with other doctors to make a diagnosis, and you also have to work with the people who would do the follow-up after you find some strategies to improve their communication. It is very nice because you always work with other people, and you also have some time alone. It is the perfect match for me. Sometimes specialists have different opinions, so it can create some issues between the employees, but we always find a way to be in mutual agreement at the end.

I do not plan to retire early because I really enjoy this job, and I am a little bit scared of not having a regular schedule. I do not want to go to the retirement before my sixty-five years old. Even after that, I could do some voluntary work just to keep me entertained. Also, the cost of life is getting higher, and that scares me because I do not want to not have enough money to pay for my needs. Most of the speech therapist take their retirement at the age of sixty. When you have been doing for many years, the salary is pretty good. One of the projects I would like to do is to volunteering abroad in a disadvantaged school because I know a lot of the students need some help, but there is no one to help them with their education.

The career of a speech therapist is not dangerous, but sometimes, you have some issues with some patient. Some people do not want to be treated, and reject our help. Also, when you work with children, they have a lot of energy sometimes, so it is impossible to talk with them or try to make some activities with them.
