When you finally graduate!

After graduating from McGill University with a Master in Communication Sciences and Disorders with specialization in Speech Language Pathology, you finally have the option to choose a field of work.

Choice 1 : Work in the education community.

Choice 2 : Work in the health sector.

Work in the education community.

Working in the education community has always been a goal for you. You get offered two interesting work opportunities.

Choice 1 : Work as a Speech Therapist in a primary school.

Choice 2 : You decide to work as a Speech Therapist at a high school.

Work in the health sector.

Even if working in the health sector was not your first option you decide search for a job in that sector because of the great health benefits and the salary they offer.

Choice 1 : You get an offer to work at the McGill University Health Center as a Speech Therapist.

Work as a Speech Therapist in a primary school.

Since you always liked kids you decide to take the offer of the primary school Bois-Franc Aquarelle in Ville Saint-Laurent as a Speech Therapist. As soon as you start your first week there you get to work with a 7 years old young boy who has stuttering issues and needs your help. This young boy also has a behavioral problem. On your first session with him he gets really agitated and starts to punch the wall. What do you do?

Choice 1 : You try to stop the young boy from hitting the wall and calm himself down.

Choice 2 : You ask the security guard to intervene.

You decide to work as a Speech Therapist at a high school.

You get an offer from Pierre-Laporte high school to work there as a Speech Therapist. You went to that high school when you were a teenager so you decide to take that job offer. You are given the task to work closely with a teacher that you had when you were studying there and that you didn't got along with.

Choice 1 : You ask to work with another teacher.

Choice 2 : You decide to work with the teacher and try to mend the relationship.

You get an offer to work at the McGill University Health Center as a Speech Therapist.

The McGill University Health Center contacts you and offers you a job as a Speech Therapist. You will be working with elderly people who have been diagnosed with Alzheimer.

Choice 1 : You accept the offer!!

Choice 2 : You decline the offer.

You try to stop the young boy from hitting the wall and calm himself down.

Since you are worried that the young boy hurts himself you directly try to stop him. As your trying to calm him down you receive punch in the leg and the young boy leaves the room. You have no choice then advise the school principal of the situation.

Choice 1 : Your meeting with the school principal of the primary school.

You ask the security guard to intervene.

The security guard is able to control the situation with no issue. The school director thanks you for the way you handled the situation. He is happy to have you in their team.

You ask to work with another teacher.

You ask to meet the school principal and explain to him that you do not feel comfortable working with the teacher he assigned to you. You also ask him if you could work with another teacher.

Choice 1 : The school principal is not happy about your request.

You decide to work with the teacher and try to mend the relationship.

Even if you use not to get along with that teacher, you are now older and more mature. You go calmly talk to the teacher and her reaction is really positive. Since working as a Speech Therapist demands that you work closely with other professionals, you need to be able to remain professional in any conflicts.

The school principal feels that it is not professional. He tells you that since you made the choice to work at a school you previously went to you need to manage it in a more mature way.

You accept the offer!!

You feel confident and exited about this project and you decide to accept the offer. One of your first patients is a 60-year-old woman who has been diagnosed with Alzheimer five years ago. She starts to have trouble expressing herself correctly. You really want to help her so you set up a program.

Choice 1 : You give your patient a program that is extremely demanding but that could give tremendous results.

Choice 2 : You give your patient an easy program with only a few exercises.

You decline the offer.

As it is your first job in this field after your studies you think it would be too big a responsibility and decide to decline the offer. This may not be the best idea since it could be a great opportunity. It's important to have ambition and to have confidence in your abilities.

The school principal is not happy with how you handled the situation. He tells you that even if you have good intentions you need to follow the procedure and ask for help from the security if a child becomes violent.

At the meeting with the school principal, you argue with him that you did nothing wrong. Unfortunately the school principal has to suspend you since you are not doing your job the way you are supposed to. When, you work in a team with other professionals from other fields you need to stick to your line of work.

You sincerely apologize about what happened and you tell him that from now on you will follow the procedure. The school principal is satisfied that you learned from your mistakes.

You give your patient a program that is extremely demanding but that could give tremendous results.

You really want to help your patient so you give her a program that is extremely demanding since there are 10 exercises to do every day.This program was proven to give tremendous results, so you think it would be appropriate for her. Sadly, when you see your patient, a week later, she felt completely discourage. It was too demanding for her. You were too eager to help her and now you need to give her the appropriate program that will make her feel as she is making progress.

The program was easy but adequate for your patient. Since it is the first program she ever tried, it needed to be relatively easy so it builds her confidence. After months of work you saw that the programs you had set up for her were a big help.
