It was the beginning of college. I had to make myself an important study plan to get good grades. Police Technology is a really charged program. As a student with semesters with over seven courses, the best way I can help myself is to start correctly with a lot of motivation and determination. Personally, I think I had a good start. My semester was going well, I had good grades. I was so invested nothing could make me lose my focus and my goal. The beginning was kinda simple because we were learning the basics of the courses. But as we kept going and progressing in the journey, the workload was getting intense.

With the semester going by and getting more and more work to do, I was slowly loosing focus and motivation. The work charge was way more than what I expected it to be in Police Technology. I didn't know a lot of people in my classes and with nobody to help and motivate you to work harder and better, it's complicated to not lose focus. I started to do the homework last minute because I rather enjoy timing with my friends and family instead of being in my books all week and never go out. As the semester was progressing, and finding myself procrastinating a lot, I put myself in a really bad situation where I was failing some classes and losing the poor amount of friends I had because I wasn't contributing in teamwork and group projects. When my parents knew about me failing some classes, they were so enraged, that they almost kicked me out of the house. My best friend who is also in Police Technology decided to stop talking to me because the delay I took was a burden for him. But this didn't stop me.

I am really lucky because even if you fail classes, you can still stay in the program, but it will prolong it and instead of doing your program in three years, you'll have to do it in four years. The fact that we have fewer courses if we do the program in four years ensure that we have around five to six courses by semesters. The second I heard that, I had a big relief, all the stress I accumulated left my body instantly. I directly put myself back on track and start really putting effort for my future that I didn't want to fall apart for my lack of discipline. Taking more time in your journey or extend it, is nothing alarming because not everybody's path is supposed to be evenly long. I take this as a sign, and I tell myself that working hard is the only way do succeed.

The part of program that most of the students appreciate the most are the hands-on training we receive. You get to work with the newest gadget and techniques used by law enforcement, including fingerprint analysis and ballistics testing at the national police school. You learn how to collect and preserve evidence and use technology to help solve crimes. As you progress through the program, you start to expertise in a specific area of Police Technology. Certain students prefer to specialize in cybercrime, acquiring knowledge on how to investigate offenses committed on the internet and protection against cyber assaults. Others focus on community policing, learning how to build relationships of trust with citizens and work to prevent crime instead of repressing the crime so the citizens will have more trust towards the police officers. But you can only change your path after four or five years of being a patrolman for your police department. I am also super excited about the internship I will have in two semesters it will be six weeks long, and we will have an on the job training. The goal of this is to work with the officers and learn about our future job.

The job of a police officer is an incredible work. You have a lot of social and governmental advantages. Every day you wake up excited to do something new, but it's also really dangerous. It takes a lot of courage to do this, and I respect every single police officers out there. In Montreal, there's a new convention coming up, so police officers can have a better-starting salary, better work conditions and a better retirement. Effectively the actual convention doesn't make any sense compared to the amount of work they do.
