My life choices

It all started like this.

I just finished five years of high school at Polyvalente Sainte-Thérèse. I must now choose between two colleges.

Choice 1 : I went to college Ahuntsic.

Choice 2 : I went to college Montmorency.

I went to college Ahuntsic.

It’s my first year at Ahuntsic College, I didn't meet a lot of new friends because I didn't want to get distracted by them. I study in Youth and Adult Correctional Intervention and I have to choose with which client I would like to do my internship.

Choice 1 : I did my internship with adults.

Choice 2 : I did my internship with teenagers.

I went to college Montmorency.

It’s my first year at Montmorency College, I met a lot of new people and I like it. My sister goes there to, so she introduces me to some of her friends, they are really nice. I have two choices of areas of study.

Choice 1 : I am studying physical rehabilitation.

Choice 2 : I am studying University Preparation.

I did my internship with adults.

I decided to do my internship with adults at the Federal Training Center penitentiary in Laval. I'm a little scared, but I want to try for the experience.

Choice 1 : I loved my internship with the adults.

Choice 2 : I hated my internship with the adults.

I did my internship with teenagers.

I did my internship in a juvenile environment at the Fournier Academic Center in Montreal. I have always been attracted by the teenage clientele and I think that this environment will be very formative. It is a school for young people with serious behavioral problems and many other issues, such as those I see in class.

Choice 1 : I hated my internship with the teenagers.

Choice 2 : I loved my internship in a juvenile.

I am studying physical rehabilitation.

I am in the physical rehabilitation program at Montmorency College. I have always wanted to help people, so I plan to work with young athletes who are recovering from their injuries. My mother is already in the health field, so I follow her path. I find it very difficult to study, especially biology, but I think it's the program for me.

Choice 1 : It was too difficult, I dropped the physical rehabilitation program.

Choice 2 : The physical rehabilitation program is very difficult, but I'm still working hard.

I am studying University Preparation.

I am in the University Preparation Profile integration program at Montmorency College. I find it really boring, it reminds me of high school with all the basic courses. Luckily, I have a lot of friends at school, and we sometimes dry out classes to have fun outside.

Choice 1 : I dropped out of school.

Choice 2 : I failed two classes.

I loved my internship with the adults.

My internship at the penitentiary of the Federal Training Center was really interesting. I have visited every corner of the penitentiary to which the regular population never has access, even for authorized visits. I also met inmates, who were very welcoming and warm, regardless of their status. I was able to follow a real correctional officer who was working for several weeks and I helped him with his tasks.

Choice 1 : I registered at Nicolet.

Choice 2 : I applied in a halfway house.

I hated my internship with the adults.

I hated my internship at the Federal Training Center in Laval. First, I live in Montreal and I do not have a car, so travel is difficult. Second, I felt locked up even though I could go outside at breaks and go home at the end of the day. There were so many doors, you had to wait for the first door to close so another door could open. And finally, I felt invaded because there were only men (inmates and colleagues) and very few women.

Choice 1 : I applied in a drug addict center.

Choice 2 : I applied as a street worker.

I hated my internship with the teenagers.

I hated my internship in a juvenile environment at the Fournier Academic Center in Montreal. The school is very small and there are not many students. Every day, I did the same things, went to the drop-off room, and watched the kids calm down. I think this internship could have been more interesting, but there was a lot of information I could not have about the youth because it was classified as confidential.

Choice 1 : I applied in a youth center.

Choice 2 : I applied in a young house in Saint-Michel.

I loved my internship in a juvenile.

I really enjoyed my internship at the Fournier Academic Center. As I thought, this environment was very formative for me. I was able to observe on the spot all the disorders that I learned in class through behavioral disorder, language disorder, attention deficit disorder with hyperactivity and many others. There were even young people placed in group homes and youth center. The Staff members were very welcoming and gave me a lot of information on the subject.

Choice 1 : I applied at Fournier Academic Center.

Choice 2 : I applied in a YMCA.

It was too difficult, I dropped the physical rehabilitation program.

I decided to change program and register social work again at Montmorency. I think it's a better program for me, I love everything that is social. I like the program and my notes have really improved.

Choice 1 : I am pursuing social work at the university.

Choice 2 : I became a specialized educator at Jean-François Perraut High School.

The physical rehabilitation program is very difficult, but I'm still working hard.

Every day I go to class, I sit down on the first desk and I do all the work requested. Unfortunately, I still have a lot of difficulty and I often go to bed very late to study. I no longer have social life and I sometimes cry while studying. I'm starting to have dark thoughts.

Choice 1 : I am depressed.

Choice 2 : I met an older man.

I dropped out of school.

The pre-university is really too boring, I can't take it anymore. I still don't know what I want to do with my life, so it's over I leave, for the moment anyway. I'm going to find a job instead of wasting my time and money at school, I'm out. If one day I know what I want to do, I will go back to school.

Choice 1 : I'm going to work at Éconofitness at Place Bell.

Choice 2 : I'm working in a furniture shop at the commission.

I failed two classes.

I missed classes too often, so I failed two classes. I really regret and now, I have to catch up with the courses I missed. My parents are very disappointed and they decided that they will not let me go on a trip this summer, to punish me.

Choice 1 : I take summer courses.

Choice 2 : I enjoyed my summer and now I'm going to all classes this year.

I registered at Nicolet.

Nicolet is the police school in Quebec. To become an accomplished correctional officer, you have to go through that. I train to be able to pass the physical tests and it is very hard. It's a training camp, I sleep there, so I rarely see my family.

Choice 1 : I passed Nicolet's tests.

Choice 2 : I failed Nicolet's tests.

I applied in a halfway house.

A halfway house is between prison and freedom. Clients are people who have had good behavior in prison, but who are not yet ready for parole. The used ones can begin to have a more normal life, to work, to see their relatives more freely, but with restrictions. They have a curfew, their money and purchases are calculated, they have forbidden contact with certain individual etc. It's been two weeks since I've been working there, I'm getting used to it.

Choice 1 : It's boring.

Choice 2 : I like this place.

I applied in a drug addict center.

I applied to work at a drug addiction center named Dollard Cormier Center. One of my teachers often talked about this center, so I decided to work there. I welcome customers, I have a good salary, I like it.

Choice 1 : I married my boyfriend.

Choice 2 : My boyfriend got me pregnant.

I applied as a street worker.

I am now a street worker for the Centraide of Greater Montreal. It is not easy since the people of the street must get used to me. Sometimes I'm scared at night alone in the street, especially in the hot neighborhood. I saw a girls lying on the ground in the street, I went to see if she needed help.

Choice 1 : I got stabbed.

Choice 2 : She was dead.

I applied in a youth center.

I am now working for the Youth Centers of Montreal. Since I'm still in my early days, I'm on a call list. I like the job, but it's not easy for my lifestyle. I can not make plans with my family and friends because they can call me anytime. I have lunch at Allo Mon Coco with my boyfriend and the work calls me.

Choice 1 : I pretend I didn't see the call.

Choice 2 : I answered the call.

I applied at Fournier Academic Center.

After doing my internship, I gave my CV to that school. They liked me so much that they wanted to hire me immediately. For now, I'm enjoying my summer and I'm starting to work there in September.

Choice 1 : I was hit by a car the day before the school return.

Choice 2 : I was arrested for possession of marijuana.

I applied in a YMCA.

I work for the YMCA in the alternative suspension section. The teens I work with have serious behavioral problems and have been suspended from school several times. This is a very rewarding job since after their stay in my class the children do not want to leave. I can also see the improvement in their behavior and I can see the impact I have on them.

Choice 1 : A student wanted to be kicked out of school to join my group.

Choice 2 : A young man burns the YMCA.

I passed Nicolet's tests.

I'm really happy to have passed the tests in Nicolet. I was hired at Bordeaux Prison. I feel like I'm getting old it's crazy, I did not think I'd go that far.

Choice 1 :

I am pursuing social work at the university.

I study at the University of Montreal in social work. I'm doing my class in Laval. I'm in a supper with one of my friends who is studying in Youth and Adult Intervention and what we learn is very similar, but they go deeper into the subject.
