My Adventures as a Business Manager
My last semester.
During my last semester of college in my Business Management course, we were required to apply for internships. I applied to Google in Montreal and to Sunwing Tours. I got offered both internships. Which one should I choose?
Choice 1 : Accept the Google internship.
Choice 2 : Accept the Sunwing internship.
Accept the Google internship.
I was super excited to start my on-the-job-training at Google, my first choice. After only one day of doing my internship, I learned the ropes at the company. I was overwhelmed because there was so much to learn. At the end of the day, I was glad to hear that my superior was happy with me as their intern. I had really impressed him. He suggested that I apply for a job with Google after graduation. My internship was my foot in the door.

I was happy to get the internship at my first choice, Sunwing. I love to travel, and I had heard that employees get discounts and free flights to tropical resorts. After spending my first day on the phone helping customers with problems, my boss told me that they would take me on as a public relations specialist.

The boss asks for advice.
After your internship ends, your boss hires you full-time. He trusts you and frequently asks you for advice. Today, he asks you to give him advice about a new, but expensive training program for all of the employees. He asks, “should we spend the money on extra training, or save the money and not give any additional training to the staff?”.

You know that a skilled workforce is more productive and will make your company more profitable despite the additional expense. You say, “If I were you, I would spend the money on additional training for the staff. More training will make our team more productive.” The boss likes your suggestion, decides to give a pay raise, and you end up retiring from Google at the age of 65 with a fat pension.

You know that training programs are very expensive. You are concerned that if you train the employees, they might ask for a premium wage, or quit and get a job at another company. You say, “If I were you, I wouldn’t risk spending money on training the staff. What if we train them and they leave?” The boss is furious. He says, “What if we don’t train them, and they stay? That would be much worse!” You are embarrassed and decide to take an internship at Sunwing.
