When I finished high school, I had to make a career choice. I didn't know anything about adult life or what I wanted to do with my life, but one thing I knew was that I didn't want to have a job behind a desk all day. I was 18 years old when I finished high school. I had the pressure of my father who absolutely wanted me to continue my college studies until university. All I wanted was to start working, I didn't want to go to school anymore. I wanted to start a career as a custom officer at the airport or at the border between Canada and the United States. So, I had to choose between continuing my studies as my parents wanted or pursuing my path as I wanted.

I decided to make my own choices and pursue my goal as a custom officer. I am happy to start this job to get a foot in the doors in the job industry.After my on-the-job-training, I had the offer of a position at the border of the United States. Which requires me to leave my family and friends in Montreal. Again I didn't know what to do.

Choice 1 : The United States.

Home sweet Home.

I decided to stay in Montreal to continue my career with my family. Everything was going well in my job, but things started to go wrong. My parents have started to want to choose for me again. I had to decide.

Back to school.

I decided to continue my studies at Ahuntsic College in the Youth and Adult Correctional Intervention program. I tried to have straight A's and put aside all the distractions in order to.

The United States.

When I arrived, the training was completely different from the one I had experienced in Canada. The trainer had biases. It was uncomfortable working in this environment. Some of the employees behaved misconducted.

Correctional officer.

After three years in college I decide to apply for the correctional service in Canada. But, before admission, they must do a background check on each candidate. I did not expect so much challenge. I was threatened by a prisoner. He told me to leave, or I stay and risk my life.

Internship.

After, having been able to experience an internship in a youth centre. This internship was a great experience, I learned the ropes of this profession.

Harassment.

I decided to stay despite the difficulties of adaptation. I am being harassed by one of my co-workers. He sends me inappropriate photos of him. This perpetrator thinks it's flirtation when it's clearly It's a sexual harassment. He rubs shoulders with female employers and touches them in inappropriate places.

Choice 1 : Leave the job.

Choice 2 : Human resources.

Human resources.

I decided to report to HR as mentioned in the office politics. Unfortunately the person in charge is a member of the predatory family he did not take the file seriously because of the lack of evidence. Discourage I choose to.

Choice 1 : Go back to Montreal

Montreal.

Coming back was the best decision I have ever made, I could finally breathe and feel my passion coming back.

Application in a youth center.

After, a while in the youth center as a part-time employee. I realize that the wage does not suit me. I could barely support myself. They offered no premium wage to the employee.

Travailing.

I decided to take a break and see the world. My cousin and I were in the same situation, we decided to pack our bags and go on vacation. During my trip we volunteered in resources for people in difficulty which make me want to go back to school and continue my studies or stay volunteering longer.

New beginning.

I decided to continue my path, in a drug addiction center. Working in this resource allowed me to understand people who suffer from addiction and to accompany them on their way. I realized that many were ex-convicts who fell into drug use because of societies' rejection because of their past. So, I decided to resume my path as a correctional officer.

Staying in the drug addiction center.

By staying I had the feeling of not having accomplished my dream. This led to a feeling of distress that prevented me from doing my work in the centre. I had no sense of belonging since I was not where I wanted to be. where do I really want to be doing what I've always wanted to do or pursue my new passion.

Give up.

Giving up shows them that you are not capable and only showing them weakness.

After, all the threats I decided not to give up on my dream of becoming a correctional officer. Over time, I ended up gaining the confidence of the prisoners. I can follow my dream.

After all the challenges on my way I finally realized my dream of becoming a correctional officer.I have a good salary and most importantly I love what I do. 30 years later I can retire and enjoy the life I have left.
