The ending of cegep.

I am studying Letter and Communication cinema option at the cegep of Saint-Hyacinthe. Next year, I will go to university, but I don't know which one. I have three choices of universities who have cinema programs.

Choice 1 : Go to the University of Montreal.

Choice 2 : Go to Laval University.

Choice 3 : Go to Concordia University.

Go to the University of Montreal.

I choose to go study at the University of Montreal. I am happy with my choice because I will stay close to my family and friends. Also, the programs that interest me are in French. Now, I have to chose which program I will go to.

Choice 1 : BAC in cinema.

Choice 2 : BAC in cinema and media arts.

Go to Laval University.

I choose to go study at the Laval University, and I am very excited about that. It will be a new experience, away from my parents and my friends. I'm sure I will like it. However, I'm not sure in which program I want to go.

Choice 1 : BAC in cinema and digital culture.

Choice 2 : Licence in cinematographic studies.

Go to Concordia University.

I'm very happy with my choice to go study at the Concordia University. I will stay close of my family and friends, and will learn in English. I have to choose between the two programs that interest me.

After 3 years of cinema studies, I have one last thing to do. I have the choice between two options. I can do an internship on a movie set to see how things work, or volunteer abroad to help the poorest countries with the making of their movies.

When I graduated and received my diploma, I felt like I didn't explore all the things I want it. The problem is that I want to start making movies right now, so I don't know what to do. Should I do an internship and everything will be showed to be, or should I get a job and learn on-the-job-training?

I just finished my studies and I'm not sure about what I want to do now. I can find a job and do it for the rest of my life, but I'm young, and I want to enjoy life. I can join a film team and learn on-the-job-training. I can also volunteer abroad and help other countries in the cinema industry.

To improve what I learned at University, I want to enjoy my summer by working on movie sets. I don't know if I want to do it in Canada or in another country. I can be on-the-job-training here, but I can also volunteer abroad.

At the middle of my studies in cinema, I have a special thing to do. I have the choice between two options, and they give me different opportunities. I can volunteer abroad and help other people of the country with the cinema industry. I can also do an internship and explore the professional environment.

I’m very happy with my choice to go in this program. It makes me discover the jobs professionally from the beginning of the first session. It's a special program because we don’t only explore how to make a movie, but also how it works to promote it. To complete my studies, I have to choose between two options. I can do an internship to get more experience, or volunteer abroad to discover the cinema in another country, and helping in the production.

My purposes to volunteer abroad was to help the poorest countries with the cinema. I wanted to help them to produce movies, even if they don’t have a big budget. That’s why I choose to go to Haiti and be the scriptwriter for a movie. Of course, I didn’t have premium wage. I didn’t have a wage at all, but helping others is invaluable. We were three volunteers from Canada on the same project and we all loved it. For some people volunteering has just disadvantages, but for me it was the most amazing experience I ever had. It is not a dead-end job, and we make other happy with our help. I don’t know if I want to stay here and continue to help them, or go back in Canada and create my own movie.

Go do an internship.

Doing an internship is very helpful because you experiment the job and learn by the others, before actually doing the job. I choose to do an internship for the scriptwriter job. It’s similar as to be on-the-job-training, but you stay in the learning stage. It is the foot in the door to see if this job really interests you. The trainee helps you to learn the ropes, and it comes in handy. I was very excited to be an intern, but it didn’t go like I wanted to. My trainee was sweet with me, but it turned out as flirtation. I told him that I had a boyfriend, and I taught it will deter him. He still flirted with me, and his misconduct has increased. I talk to other employees, and they told me I wasn’t the first recipient of his act. He is a big perpetrator of sexual harassment, but nobody did a complaint about it because they were dreading. Should I be the first to do a complaint at the Human Resources?

Go on-the-job-training.

I was very happy about my choice to go on-the-job-training because I love this learning methods. I learned how to do the job of a scriptwriter by doing it directly. The OJT has many advantages, but also many drawbacks. Some people say that the wage of the people on-the-job-training is not high enough. I agree with them, because my wage is very low compared to my trainee. It’s him who manages my wage, but I think he doesn’t do it correctly. Maybe, I should do a complaint to the Human Resources.

Stay in Haiti.

I was very excited to continue my experience here, in Haiti. At the start, everything was going well. After a few months, my new boss starts flirting with me. I didn’t flirt with him back, and I taught it will be deterring him, but no. It transformed in sexual harassment, and I was scared of my perpetrator. I want to escape from this, but I can’t have the help of the Human Resources because I am a volunteer. My only escape is to go back in Canada. I have to choose if I go back studying or if I get a scriptwriter job.

I’m happy that I went back in Canada. My friends and family missed me during my three months of volunteering. I don’t know what I want to do now. I can continue my cinema studies to have more knowledge, but my volunteering gave me the urge to start my professional scriptwriter career.

When I talked to the Human Resources, they told me I was not the first employee to do a complaint about him. He has been fired, and they officially hired me to replace him. Even if I didn’t have a lot of experience and a huge background, they gave me a chance. I’ve been the scriptwriter of all the projects he was supposed to do. After I did all of his work, some directors asked me to join their team for writing the script of their movies. It’s now been 40 years that I do this job, and I have a good salary. Another benefit is that I can choose when I want to take my vacation. However, I’m very tired, and I choose to take my retirement this year. I will miss the drive of work, but I have a good pension, and I set aside a lot of money.

Don't do a complaint.

I have decided to not do a complaint because I love the job, and I don't want to lose an opportunity. With the experience I gained, I had a lot of new projects that have been offered to me. I only had to suffer of sexual harassment 3 months. The other teams I’ve been with show me that not everyone is incorrect in this workplace. I want to have a new experience, but I also want to find my real job. I’m not sure if I should volunteer abroad or find my real scriptwriter job.

I went back at school, but I quit after 1 month. I realized that I had enough knowledge to have a real job. I gave my resume at many cinema studios, and Hollywood hired me as a scriptwriter. It’s now been 40 years that I do this job, and I have a good salary. Another benefit is that I can choose when I want to take my vacation. However, I’m very tired, and I choose to take my retirement this year. I will miss the drive of work, but I have a good pension, and I set aside a lot of money.
