Eric's story.

I got an internship for a career as a veterinarian. I am very excited. My boss's name is Eric and I like him well. He trusts me a lot with animals. He says many times that I have what it takes to become a great veterinarian. I don't know much about Eric. He is a single dad who raised his son alone. He never speaks about why he wasn't with his wife anymore. Almost like he was ashamed of something. He tells me many times how much he had to study to become a veterinarian and how much it is worth it. Every time he would say that, I could feel a burst of motivation in my heart. In his clinic, we would receive a lot of clients. Most of the clients had dogs. Maybe it's because his logo was only a picture of a dog. I never asked, but I wondered, while being an intern there, why wasn't there more variety of animals. Monday morning I will go for it, but I am sure how to do it. I have several choices, and I don't know the outcome of each one. Either I should just ask him directly why can't we receive more animals, or I ask if there is something that could've happened that would make him just take dogs.

I asked Eric if we could talk. I could see from the look on his face that he is curious about why I would want to talk with him. As an intern, I don't like to talk much. I feel overwhelmed very easily. We are walking towards his office in complete silence. That can be scary. I started to regret what I wanted to ask. What if he gets mad and start undermining my work? Or even fires me. I am sitting on a chair in his office, and he is waiting for me to talk. I feel nauseous, but I am a veterinarian, who treats animals. I should be able to do this without that much anxiety. I finally asked why can't we receive more variety of animals. Then, he looked at me and said " Do you think it's any of your businesses or do you think you should get back to work?". I don't know what to respond to him. I've never seen him that mad. It seems like he needs leaves of absence from work.

I tell Eric that it is my business, and that I want to know, and he is surprised by my respond. It came in handy, because I proved that I know how stand up for myself. He told me that his dog died when he was young, and it affected him very much. That is why he want to help as many dogs as he can. People always wanted to know the answer to this question but Eric never cooperated, he always hindered the question. He felt comfortable enough to tell me. You need to go back to the beginning.

I get back to work.

I got back to work and my co-worker asked me what I wanted to ask Eric. I explain the situation to her, and she told me that I should insist more. Do I insist or not?

I go towards Eric's office again. I felt anxious. I know I am getting sucked up in work, and it's wrong. I ask Eric the same question, and he fired me, and took my internship away from me. I should've minded my business. You need to go back in the beginning.

I told my co-worker that I should now insist, and maybe it is something private. As I said that, Eric was just behind me. He smiled, and offered me a promotion with a raise in my salary and hired me for his company. That was a good decision. You can go back to the beginning.

I told Eric that I want to know what happened, and that I was the type of person he could trust. He told me that an intern, once, killed an animal on purpose, and he told me that it was so traumatizing that he wanted to take only dogs and few varieties of animals. He decided that because there are a lot of interns, and he doesn't want to take many risks with a lot of animals. I am traumatized. I need a leave of absence from work. I can't believe an intern would do something like that. I decided to take a break from this job. You can go back to the beginning.
