My Path to Become a Maths Teacher.

The beginning of my journey.

My years in high schools were a great successes. I passed all my of classes with good grades except for French. French was my nemesis for so long because it was the most boring class and my brain didn't want to remember anything. If I had to redo my years in high school I would have done the same thing over again, but I would have picked Physics and Chemistry classes. This choice would have opened so many more doors that I could have decided to take but unfortunately my lazy self wanted to take the fun route and not care too much of the future. I mean, I really had a lot of fun but that fun was not going to last long, and then college was near, and we had to decide in what program we wanted to go in.

Choice 2 : The dream of being an astrophysicist.

Choice 3 : The path of being a teacher.

Being an accountant.

My first choice was to be an accountant. Fortunately for me this choice didn't require anything but applied maths, and I had it. It was a piece of cake already in my head. I was really good with numbers, and I knew that it wouldn't be hard because my father is an accountant. To make it easier I ask my father a couple of tips that he can give for college and university. Thanks to him I already knew a lot. Then, I figured out that I could ask my father to go to his office and see what kind of work he was doing. I was so excited to see what kind of maths were behind the job of accountant. When I arrived at his office everyone was divided in some sort of group of six even though they don't work together. I sat next to him, and he started showing me how it was done. Then, it hit me, it was not what I was expecting, it was all done by a certain program, and he almost didn't have to do anything. It was looking so boring.

The dream of being an astrophysicist.

I was always a fan of space. Space is so big and so beautiful that I wanted to study it. I started doing some research on the subject. They were talking about our solar system and how it orbits around the Milky Way and that it going to fuse with Andromeda. The goal of Astrophysics is to understand and explain how astronomical objects and phenomena occur and work. It was fascinating. Then, I did some research on what do I needed to be an astrophysicist. To become a professional astrophysicist you need to do an undergraduate degree in physics, with an honour's year, and then do a PhD, and unfortunately for me and my laziness, it was too much. So, I decided not to do that and just keep it as a hobby.

The path of being a teacher.

I have always loved mathematics and for some reason I also love to explain things to people that don't understand the things. This might sound vague, but it's really not. Since high school, in maths' classes, I would always help my friends when the teacher was occupied with another student, and I loved it when they would understand what I was explaining to them. My brain, for some reason, didn't make the connection until my second year in college. I was lucky because I was already doing my Physics and Chemistry classes in adult school at the same time, classes that I needed to become a teacher, so I didn't lose this one year of college doing nothing. I finally had my plan in my head and I just need to follow it.

Choice 1 : Playing video games for the whole semester.

Choice 2 : Studying to have good grades.

Teacher

Playing video games for the whole semester.

My years in high schools was really easy, so I never really studied a lot. I had a lot of free time, so I played a lot of video games with my friends. I thought it would have been the same in college, so I did the same. Finals were near and my grades were nowhere near being good, and it was all my fault. Obviously, even though I tried to study for my finals it wouldn't have been near enough to pass my classes, so I failed miserably.

Playing video games

Studying to have good grades.

I had to change my way of studying, so basically I had to make one since I never really studied for any exam in high school. Then, Covid-19 arrived and close every school for a week, and change the way to attend college completely. I drop out. It was way too hard for me to concentrate in front of a screen listening to the teacher talk for two to three hours straight. I would have lost it.

Choice 1 : I gave up.

Choice 2 : I came back.

Studying

I gave up.

I had lost all hopes because of Covid and how the school was now. I couldn't figure out a way to attend classes without being distracted by something, and I would always lose track of the class. I just gave up and decided not to go back to school and find a job that could be interesting with my high school diploma.

Giving up

I came back.

I couldn't bear myself stopping where I'm at right now, and with the luck of a four leaf clover I heard the amazing news that schools was coming back to normal but with a mask on to not spread the Covid. I was so happy! I went back to college and manage to get back on track. Last year of college was something. First I had to decide which university I wanted to go, and I picked UQTR, the University of Trois-Rivieres. In the blink of an eye the finals were here and my grades were looking pretty good. I never studied that much in my whole life, but it paid off. I passed all of them, and I was off to university. College was a great experience. University was something else. I had to study even more, but more efficient, and there was a lot of party's. Overall everything went well except for the TECFÉE. The uniform language test. This test was such a pain, and it was so difficult, but I mange to pass it. I found a job pretty quickly since there is so much demand. The high school mathematical teacher.

Choice 1 : Understand why is being a teacher is hard.

Choice 2 : Being the teacher I wanted to be.

Graduating

Understand why is being a teacher is hard.

The reason why there is so much demand is that new teachers burned out. They can't contain the new generation of students as well as the poor quality of the workplace, and the salary that doesn't compensate for it. It was my case as well. I couldn't bear the pressure of the new generation, and I burn out too. I don't think I will be able to go back, but I will for sure try, just not now.

Choice 1 : Start again

Leaving

Being the teacher I wanted to be.

Being a teacher is a very hard task since this new generation is so hard to manage, but I won't give up to such a little thing. I just started, and I can already see the love of teaching. This love is coming from the students who want to learn. Here I am, a new teacher in a new school teaching to new students, and I can already tell that I made the right decision.
