Summary.

Harry Potter shapes an entire generation. It has become a household name and nearly everyone knows about the boy wizard and his two best friends, Ron and Hermione. The stories span seven years, coinciding with the seven years a student spends at Hogwarts. Specifically, these book span Harry's seven years at Hogwarts. The first book begins at the beginning of Harry's life. Harry, at 15 months old, was orphaned and left on his Aunt and Uncle's front door. We learn that Harry is indeed magical, but his new family is not. Fast forward 10 years and Harry is a small, neglected, and shy 11-year-old who lives in the cupboard under the stairs. He is told repeatedly that he is not worthy of the Dursley's (his aunt, uncle, and rotund cousin) love. Suddenly, letters begin arriving for Harry. Despite the Dursley's best attempts, he learns of Hogwarts, the magical school in the UK, and decides to attend. Harry has many adventures at his new school, meeting friend (Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley) and foe (Draco Malfoy and Professor Severus Snape) alike. The first book is amazing alone, yes, but it truly serves to set the stage for the rest of Harry's education. The second book begins at the Dursley's again. Harry is trapped without being able to contact his friends. Ron, however, soon comes to his rescue in a flying car. Harry travels to Ron's house and meets most of his family, three of his older brothers he knew from Hogwarts, his younger sister, and his father. The two go back to Hogwarts and learn the school is under attack, and his professor is unable to stop it. Nearly single-handedly, Harry fights to save the only home he's ever known. We meet an incredible character in the third book; one of my absolute favorites. Professor Remus John Lupin steps in to take over the Defense Against the Dark Arts classes and quickly earns the students' respect. He is extremely capable in his field and kind to the students. The story traces the path of an escaped prisoner who is (supposedly) hunting Harry down, but in the end, we learn that no one is who they seem to be. The fourth book begins with Harry's troubling nightmares. He learns of a competition at school that could result in a competitor's death. Despite age restrictions (one must be seventeen to enter the tournament, Harry is fourteen) and his own lack of desire to participate, Harry is forced to compete. People are mysterious around every corner and all motives are questioned- even Harry's own. The book ends with a spellbinding surprise, setting the darker stage for the last few books. Book five definitely has a more depressed, melancholic mood. The book covers now feature cool colors instead of the bright vibrant colors that we've grown used to. Harry is exiled and ridiculed throughout the school. Very few stand by him, including the clumsy Neville Longbottom, Luna "Loony" Lovegood, Ron, and Hermione. Dumbledore, the headmaster who has always stood by him, will now no longer speak or make eye contact with him. The new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher, who is replaced every year, is more than willing to single him out, partially due to her boss leading the smear campaign against Harry. Events in this book bring us hope, such as the formation of the DA (you'll have to read to see!) and the Weasley twins' exit, while others, such as the death at the end, make us realize the true cost of war because yes, the Wizarding World is at war. The penultimate book details Harry's new life; he grows obsessed with taking down Voldemort and doing anything he can to assist. He also learns to cope with typical teenage hormones because, despite everything that is going on around him, Harry is only sixteen. Harry, now knowing from the fifth book, surrounds himself with his close friends, the ones who remained at his side no matter what. He becomes accustomed to death, as his friends learn of deaths nearly every day. The sixth book shows the world at open war before the end. The final book begins with Harry's final days at the Dursleys' home, including their final goodbye. Loss begins early in the book, with Harry's beloved pet and trusted guardian both dying within the first couple hundred pages. Within a week, the Magical Government has fallen and Voldemort has taken over. Harry, Ron, and Hermione are now on the run hunting for Horcruxes- magical items that keep Voldemort alive. The only issue with these Horcruxes? They can be anything- a football or a dolphin even. Harry faces death multiple times through the events of the book with the final time culminating in a questionable yet still explosive ending that rocks the Wizarding and Muggle world alike.

The Harry potter series brings out perspectives of displacement and projection caused by sibling rivalry, and bullying, as well as demonstrating super ego, ego and Id in the form of Harry, Hermione and Ron. Harry lives with a family which sets very high standards of social acceptability.

Styles and Allusion.

Here is just a short list of a few: Sirius Black's name and anamagus forms are both allusions to astronomy and folklore. His first name, Sirius, is another name for the "Dog Star," part of the constellation Canis Major, otherwise known as the "Great Dog." Considering his anamagus form of a great black dog, this fits extremely well. The fact that he is a big black dog and is mistaken for the Grim is an allusion to English folklore, which the Grim is a part of. Remus Lupin's name is an allusion to Roman mythology. The founders of Rome, Romulus and Remus, were said to be raised by wolves, which Remus' name and anamagus form allude to. Also, in Deathly Hallows, his codename is Romulus, another direct allusion to this. Fluffy, the three-headed dog in Sorcerer's/Philosopher's Stone, is an allusion to the mythological creature Cerberus in Greek mythology, who was a three-headed dog that guarded the Underworld. Also, like Fluffy, the Greek hero Orpheus put Fluffy to sleep by playing music on his lyre. Oh, and Hagrid claims he bought Fluffy from a Greek man, which just further alludes to the myth.

Theme and Development.

Love is another major theme in the books. It is described as one of the only things which can conquer the Dark Arts and even death, evident in Lily Potter 's sacrifice. When she died to save her son, it created an ancient spell which protected Harry when he was hit with the killing curse and making him "The Boy who Lived". It is such a common theme throughout children's literature that it, not unexpectedly, drives nearly all of the book's action — and is described on the page: "The Hero's Journey." Potter characters are classified based upon which "side" they are on, and reader frustration develops when the lines are not clear.

Harry Potter Facts Harry Potter is a series of fantasy novels written by J.K. Rowling. The first Harry Potter book, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, was published in 1997, which was followed by six best-selling books and eight blockbuster films. These books have been translated into 80 languages, won multiple awards and sold more than 500 million copies worldwide, becoming the best-selling book series in history. This children’s fantasy novel became an international hit and Rowling became a global literary sensation in the year 1999 when the first three installments of Harry Potter ranked in the top three slots of the New York Times best-seller list after achieving similar success in her home country, the United Kingdom. The central character in the story, Harry James Potter, was born on July 31, 1980. He is a half-blood wizard and is considered to be the most famous wizards of modern times. He was the only child and son of James and Lily Potter, who were murdered by the Dark Lord, Voldemort. In the attempted murder of Harry by the Dark Lord, his parents protected him with a spell that made him survive Voldemort’s magic, earning him the name “The Boy Who Lived.” Harry became a student at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, where most of the events in the stories take place. This academy is where students learn a great deal in classical mythology and alchemy, incorporating objects and wildlife such as magic wands, magical plants, potions, spells, flying broomsticks, centaurs and other magical creatures. As Harry develops as a wizard each year (as depicted in each of the seven books in the series chronicles), his adventures with friends Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger also develop up to his battle against Lord Voldemort. The stories demonstrate how their friendships save each other’s lives many times. Their friendship sees them create a secret study group, “Dumbledore’s Army”, which aims to teach other students higher-level skills of Defense Against the Dark Arts. Through these lessons, Harry takes the lead as he learns to realize his painful connection to Voldemort’s actions telepathically. Dumbledore’s Army, along with the members of the Order of the Phoenix (Remus Lupin, the Weasleys, Sirius Black, Mundungus Fletcher and many more), protects Hogwarts from the Dark Lord and his Death Eaters. Meanwhile, Harry, with the help of Professor Dumbledore, the headmaster of Hogwarts, learns about defeating the Dark Lord by destroying a series of Horcruxes he developed to preserve his life. As Harry, Hermione and Ron search for the pieces of Horcruxes, the trio learn details about an ancient prophecy about the Deathly Hallows – three objects from an old fairy tale, The Tale of the Three Brothers. These items include the Elder Wand, an unbeatable wand (in the possession of Dumbledore); the Resurrection Stone, able to summon the dead; and the infallible Invisibility Cloak (that Harry Potter owns). The trio then suspect Voldemort of looking for these three items, thinking that the wand, specifically, can overpower Harry Potter. Upon learning that Harry himself became Voldemort’s Horcrux when the Dark Lord murdered his parents, Harry surrenders himself to Voldemort where the Dark Lord cast a killing curse, Avada Kedavra, at him. Harry awakens and faces Voldemort, whose Horcruxes have all been destroyed and, in the final battle, Voldemort’s killing curse rebounds off Harry’s defensive spell, Expelliarmus, that kills Voldemort. The spell rebounds because the real owner of the Elder Wand Voldemort uses is Harry Potter. He also unties the three Deathly Hallows but refuses to use them, breaking the wand and losing the resurrection stone. Joanne Rowling, born on July 31, 1965, who uses the pen name J.K.Rowling and Robert Galbraith, is a British author and screenwriter of the Harry Potter series. She uses male pen names for the reason that: “My publisher, who published Harry Potter said to me, we think this is a book that will appeal to boys and girls. And I said, oh, great. And they said, so could we use your initials?” The publisher asked her to disguise her name because of the perception that because she’s a woman, the book wouldn’t then appeal to both sexes. When the books became award-winning, the publishers disclosed she was a woman. J.K. Rowling has lived a life of “rags to riches” in which she progressed from living on state benefits to being the world’s first billionaire author. She lost the billionaire status after giving away much of her earnings to charity but remains one of the wealthiest people in the world.
