My name is Marilie and I come from Repentigny, a very quiet area with lots of children. My mother always had daycare, so I always grew up with children. My mom passed on to me the value of always helping others and to this day I still respect this value. So, I decided to follow my everyday passion and become a paramedic. Before starting my studies I have to make a big decision...

So, I decided to go and study in the corner of Montreal at Ahuntsic College. Also, I heard that there are a lot of students studying Pre-Hospital Emergency Care. I'm happy because studying in Montreal means I'm not too far from my friends and family. Every day I will go to school with the city bus. I can't wait to start. Apparently the program is very heavy and difficult, and I'm not very good at school...

After a long period of questioning, I decided to leave my hometown and move to Trois-Rivieres to pursue my passion. So, I moved, and I am currently in an apartment near the CEGEP where the technique is given. I'm starting my session really soon! I received an invitation thanks to contacts in order to be able to do a one-day internship.

I've never been so discouraged... Doing a technique in 3 years was more than discouraging, and I let everything go. I could no longer pursue my passion. I did not know how to manage my anxiety.

After 4 years of study I finally finished and obtained my diploma as a graduate in Pre-hospital Emergency care. I have already received a request for a vacant position to be filled. The boss asked me if I want to work tonight or tomorrow during the day.

Car crash.

Since the wage of a paramedic is not very high in the beginning, I agreed to go and help in a paid internship. I arrived at a very serious scene. A big car accident. The injured man in question was caught in his car and by unfolding the car he was probably not going to survive. He was caught under the car and the pressure of the metal on him kept him alive. I had to advise him that he probably wasn't going to survive... I didn't like being in this position.

Choice 2 : Announce him his death.

Heart attack.

I arrived on the scene where a woman was not feeling well. She had a heart attack and with the good reflexes I acquired I saved the young lady from death. After a long day I left work and on the way home I had a serious accident.

Choice 1 : I die.

Choice 2 : I survive.

Work tonight.

I worked at night and that night was very quiet, we stayed in McDonald's parking lot all night. We didn't receive any important calls last night.

During my day shift I experienced emotion and stress. I intervened on a scene of suicide, a car accident and discomfort due to the great heat. In order to calm down I would like to be able to spend a nice evening in good company with people I love.

I was not able to be put in this position. I've just started my career and I've been asked to tell an innocent man that he's going to die in a few minutes. I could not imagine the reaction of this man. Tell him that he will have to make the last call, the last message or even the last prayer before he leaves for an unknown world. I couldn't, so I left and went home.

The time had come... I approached him, and with a heavy heart I had to explain to him that the burden he had on him allowed him to stay alive. The pressure kept him from bleeding out. I told him and in a frightened tone he looked at me and said "tell my wife that I love her and my children that I will watch over them from above" Seized by this confidence I went back and started crying. I still did my job even if the end is not always positive.

I woke up in the hospital after being in a coma for almost 3 months. I don't remember anything anymore. I only have flashbacks of the accident but nothing more. I find myself without landmarks and without memories. I'm not even sure I'll ever be able to walk again. I'm staying here until I get better. I had the choice to see my boyfriend in the hospital or my mother.

Since my accident, I was so excited to finally see my lover. I was stressed because I was afraid to see his reaction when he was going to see me hurt so much. Luckily everything went well he took me in his arms and told me again how grateful he was that I was still there.

When I called my mother, she came to see me as soon as possible. She couldn't believe her eyes that I woke up after all that. Now 1 month has passed since, and I took all my strength. I can go back to work if I want.

I decided to go to Hawaii for 1 month and to take advantage of the heat. I left in good company with the love of my life and the rest does me a lot of good.
