Hotel Problems.

The end of university.

I just finished college, and I needed to find my first real job in a hotel. I decided to apply in different cities to make sure I have a lot of choices. Today I received two calls from two hotels. One is in Quebec City and the other one is in Thetford Mines. I need to choose one of them and make sure I'll make the right choice for my career.

Choice 1 : Quebec City.

Choice 2 : Thetford Mines.

graduation

Quebec City.

I did my two weeks of probation at the front desk, and It went well! For the first time I am alone at the front desk and the hotel is busy tonight. But there is a problem. There is no lifeguard at the indoor pool and there's supposed to have one. I tried to call the company we are working with for them to look for someone to come. But no one is answering. I see all the kids running around the pool, and it's hard for me to watch and advertise them with all the people coming for their check-in. I'm thinking about giving a call to my boss or calling back the lifeguard company.

Choice 1 : Call my boss.

Choice 2 : Call the lifeguard company.

Thetford Mines.

I find my training very difficult because we're in the middle of the summer and the hotel is at is busiest. No one has the time to train me at the front desk. Some rooms are not ready, and it's 5 p.m. and people are screaming on my colleagues because they're mad. I ask them if they need help because I watched them, and I think I can do the guests check-in but no one is lets me help them. My colleague needed to go on the floors to go get clean towels for a guest, and I'm left alone down stairs. A client is enters and want to check-in. I'm supposed to watch today, but I feel ready to do the arrival. But I at the same time I'm telling myself that I should wait for my co-worker to come back.

Choice 1 : Wait for my colleague.

Choice 2 : Do the check-in.

Wait for my colleague.

The guest is very impatient, and he explained to me that he just did a 4-hour drive to get here. I tell him that I'm really sorry and that I am new here, and I need to wait for my colleague to make sure we do his check-in correctly. He starts to scream at me that he is very tired, and he doesn't want to wait, and that I'm incompetent at my job. I try to stay calm, but I'm boiling inside.

Choice 1 : Stay calm.

Choice 2 : Argue with him.

Do the check-in.

I don't want the guest to wait, so I start the check-in with him and hope my colleague will arrive soon. I make sure that the client his really staying for 2 nights and that his room is for 4 people. Everything is fine. I make him sign all the paper, and I give him the key to his room. My co-worker comes back, and I tell him I did a check-in. He is very proud of me, but tells me I forgot the most important part. I forgot to take the credit card number. He tells me that either I call the guest in their room for him to come back at the front desk or wait for him to come downstairs and tell him we forgot something at his check-in.

She tells me that she's going to think about a solution and text me what to do. She hung up and left me with nothing. After an hour, she texted me that either I am closing the pool or I let it open without any lifeguard on duty. It gets dangerous minute by minute.

They don't take it seriously and tell me that they will try to call the lifeguard that is supposed to be here, and if he doesn't answer they will send me one. I ask them how much time it will take, and they hung up. I waited for two hours now and no one is here. I have two solutions. I can call again or ask one of my colleagues to come in and work as a lifeguard.

Choice 2 : Ask a colleague to come in.

I explain again to him that I'm new and that I prefer to wait for my colleague. He calms down and his wife enters the lobby. She's really sweat and calms him down. My colleague arrives and do their check-in. Everything went well and they go to their room. The rest of the night was calm and nothing else happened. The next day, I started my shift at 7 a.m. My boss was there, and she asked me what happened last night. I said nothing happened and that everything went well. My boss tells me to go see her at her desk but a client arrives at the same time.
