Choosing a Career.

My First year at Ahuntsic College.

I just came out of high school, and I am now studying at Ahuntsic College in Social Science. I dream of becoming a police officer but, I have been rejected from the Police Technology program because of the physical tests. To be accepted in this program at Ahuntsic College, you have to have good grades, which I do since I’m a straight A's student, and you have to have good results in the physical tests. The physical test has two parts. The first one is the Cooper Test which consists in running as far as possible in twelve minutes, and the second one is swimming a fifty-meter distance as fast as possible. I did well in the swimming test, but terribly in the Cooper Test. Studying in the Social Science program isn’t that bad, quite the contrary I am very happy. I have a lot of very interesting classes such as History, Philosophy, Literature, and Psychology. When I was in High School, I though about becoming a lawyer or a psychologist, and I am starting to think about it again. Should I continue studying in the Social Science program to go at University in Law or Psychology or should I change programs to study Police Technology?

Choice 1 : Continue studying in the Social Science program to go at University in Law or Psychology

Choice 2 : Change programs to study Police Technology

Law or Psychology?

It is my last year in the Social Science program, and it is almost the time to apply for admission at University. I haven't chosen yet what I want to study between Law and Psychology. The legal profession is for people who like to do research and solve problems, who communicate easily, and who are meticulous and rigorous. Lawyers must advise their clients on their rights and support them in the legal system. The profession of psychologist is for people who like to understand people and human psychology, who have good interpersonal skills and who are discreet and respectful. Psychologists work with people with emotional, intellectual or social difficulties and must help them find solutions. Should I choose the Law program or the Psychology program?

I traveled in Europe for three months which fulfilled an old dream of mine. The problem is that I now feel overwhelmed and a sense of dread thinking of going back to study. I suffer from a lack of motivation. I find this sentiment absolutely maddening since I really want to finish my studies, but I can't help it. More often than not in the past few weeks, I though about giving up becoming a lawyer and instead getting a job as a receptionist at a law firm. I really don't know what to do. Should I go back to university to complete my Master's degree in Law in order to become a lawyer or should I give up my studies and become a receptionist at a law firm instead?

Studying in the Police Technology program.

I have been accepted into the Police Technology program, and I am very happy. Two and a half years later, I have almost finished my studies in this program, and I have another decision to make. Should I go and study at the Quebec National Police School so that I can become a police officer afterwards or should I go to university to study criminology.

Studying at the Quebec National Police School.

I am very excited to go study at the Quebec National Police School to become a police officer, my dream since I was young. I give my maximum every day and fifteen weeks later, I graduated from the Quebec National Police School. I quickly found a job as a patrol police officer for the Sûreté du Québec (SQ), the provincial police force. Before getting the job, the SQ did a background check thoroughly, and I had multiple job interviews with HR. During the last interview, we talked about my wage, my pension, my work conditions, compensation packages and retirement. After that, we talked about the training phase that I had to complete before becoming a full time employee. It is similar to OJT (on-the-job-training) because an experienced policeman shows me how he works on a daily basis, and I have to show that I know what I am doing. I completed the training phase and was officially hired a few weeks later. I am very proud to be part of the police force. After six years in my career, I'm starting to wonder if I should keep my current job as a patrol police officer or if I should become a Detective Sergeant.

Choice 1 : Keep my current job.

Choice 2 : Become a Detective Sergeant

Continuing Being a Patrol Police Officer.

I have been a patrolling police officer for fifteen years now. One beautiful fall afternoon, as I answered a call, a man shot me with a gun and hit me in the chest. My patrol partner shoots the individual and kills him. I am bleeding profusely and an ambulance is urgently requested at the scene. I am taken to the hospital where my life is feared. After hard work, the doctors manage to stabilize me. I survived this accident, but I now suffer from post-traumatic stress. Should I retire and go teach in the Police Technology program or should I take a vacation and come back to work as a police officer?

Choice 1 : Retire and go teach in the Police Technology program.

Choice 2 : Take a vacation and come back to work as a police officer.

Becoming a Teacher.

I quickly found a job at Cégep de Trois-Rivières as a teacher in the Police Technology program. I love my new job and the students are very kind and passionate. They ask a lot of questions and do well. I teach until I retire at the age of 63.

Going Back to Work.

After a vacation in Europe to clear my mind, a one-year leave to take care of myself and follow-up with a psychologist, I start to feel better again, and I decide to go back to work and return to my patrol police officer position. I missed work, and I am very happy to find my colleagues and the daily action. I retire a few years later without having had any other problem.

Choice 1 : My First year at Ahuntsic College.

Becoming a Detective Sergeant.

I am now a Detective Sergeant and I love my new job. I love the new challenges that come before me, analyzing the evidence and finding contradictions in the statements of suspects. After a few years in my job, I discovered something strange about my boss. He is in contact with members of organized crime and accepts bribes in exchange for information about our investigations into them. He's a corrupt man. I do not know what to do. Should I report him or should I tell him I know that he does illegal things, but since he is my boss I won't do anything in exchange for a salary increase which will help me pay my mortgage quicker.

Choice 1 : Report my boss.

Choice 2 : Don't report him in exchange for a salary increase.

My boss gets arrested, fired and sent to jail for the crimes he committed. The vacant position that is now left needs to be filled. Thanks to my integrity and my hard work over the past few years, I was offered the position. I accept this offer and am very happy in my new position. I retire several years later.

My Retirement.

Throughout my career, I have put aside a lot of money in order to fulfill two dreams that I have had since I was 16. Which trip should I take first?

My Job as a Receptionist.

Thanks to my excellent resume and a few contacts, I managed to find myself a job as a receptionist in a law firm very quickly as I had a foot in the door there. The firm did an in-depth background check on me, and I had to go through several HR interviews before officially getting the job. During my interview, we discussed compensation package, my wage, leave of absence and premium wage. We also talked about my training, and they told me that I was going to receive an OJT as in on-the-job-training, which means that I was going to learn the ropes and all the ins-and-outs of the job at my workplace, and this while getting an income. Everything seems perfect, but there is only one drawback, which is that my boss's assistant seems to be a difficult person to work with. After two years at the law firm, I realize that it is a dead-end job and that my boss's assistant is a real piece of work. His name is Jonathan Smith, and he will do anything to deter me from getting a promotion or a raise even though I am a very good employee. His obstinacy to hinder me from getting a raise is quite maddening. I think I am a good employee because I work overtime very often without complaining, which leads me to feeling overwhelmed more often then not, I am quite nice, and I am a perfectionist which is why I always thoroughly do all my work. Also, my time management is quite on point. Sometimes, I think about quitting, because of how annoying Jonathan is. He is a misogynistic prick with a lot of bias against women. He often undermines female lawyers at work too. The only thing that is withholding me from smacking him in the face is the fact that I work at a law firm. The sense of fulfillment and the drive of work that I got when I started isn't there anymore. The only thing worthwhile that is left there is my friendship with my other colleagues, but the drudgery of work is starting to become too much. Should I quit an go back at university to go get my Master's degree in law in order to become a lawyer or should I continue working at the law firm as a receptionist?

Choice 1 : Quit and go back at university in order to become a lawyer.

Choice 2 : Continue working at the law firm as a receptionist.

receptionist

Staying at the Firm.

I decided to stay at the law firm even though it is a nightmare to work with Jonathan Smith. One day, we got an intern at the firm. She was there to complete an internship of six weeks. Her name was Emma. We noticed pretty quickly that Jonathan had a thing for Emma, the intern. He was very flirtatious with her, and he would often throw a cursory glance at her. The office politics started at the firm. I was getting sucked up in against my will because everyone was talking to me about it. Emma seemed to be very uncomfortable every time it happened, but Jonathan didn't seem to notice. One day, Jonathan went way too far and kissed Emma on the lips. She made a complaint to HR and the police for sexual harassment. Jonathan said that it was only harmless flirtation, and that he didn't do it on purpose, thinking that he could pull off this incident, but no one believed him. The perpetrator's lack of respect for women and his gross misconduct lead the recipient, the intern Emma, to leave her internship before it was over. This incident lead me to think about my future and my career. Should I stay at the law firm as a receptionist or should I quit and go back at university to become a lawyer?

Choice 1 : Stay at the law firm as a receptionist.

Choice 2 : Go back at university to become a lawyer.

The End of my Receptionist Career.

After Jonathan Smith left the company, going to work was much more enjoyable. I was happy enough at my job to do my entire career there as a receptionist. After 40 years of loyal service, I retired I traveled a lot.
