Start at the beginning?

I am studying Medical Electrophysiology at Ahuntsic College, to become medical Electrophysiology technologist. I am in my last year of college, and I’m so proud of myself. I am not sure what I need to do, if I should look for a job or I should make an internship to have more experience.

Looking for a job.

Is time, to look for a job, in the newspaper I found two very interesting options, the first is to work in a hospital and the second is to become a teacher at the College. Which will be the best option according to my skills and qualities?

Choice 1 : To work at the hospital.

Choice 2 : To work at Ahuntsic College.

To make internship before finish the school.

I think to work as intern in a private clinic could be a good option because I can learn by practicing in real life and not only theoretically. My goal is to get more experience on my field of study, because is very important to feel useful. I know that some clinics give on-the-job-training but I feel that sometimes the training time is not enough, and I can feel overwhelm if I only learn the ropes.

To work at the hospital.

Working in a hospital is one of my goals but I don't know if I am ready for this, because it’s a big commitment and a big challenge. Today my field of study give to the employees abundant workplace options. So, I don't know with choice I should take. I should work at Cardiology or Electroencephalogram department?

Choice 1 : To work at the Institute of Cardiology of Montreal.

Choice 2 : To work at Pierre-Boucher Hospital in Longueuil.

Recently, I saw a vacant position in the Human Resources Department at the Institute of Cardiology, the compensation package is truly advantageous and I read that they have two jobs offers: In the first one, they are offering legwork, and on the second one, they offer to work at the hospital in Montreal. These two offers seem great to me, I already sent my CV and my background check. I just need to wait to have my first interview and decide which one is the best option!

To work at Pierre-Boucher Hospital in Longueuil.

One day, they called me for an interview, I took the subway to get to the hospital. A man started flirting with me, how I didn't follow your insinuations, he started sexually assaulting me, he started touching my legs I didn’t know what to do! My dread paralyzed me, I couldn't speak, I was trembling. A woman realized the situation, she discreetly called the police. Thank God they caught the perpetrator, they checked his criminal record, and they realized that this person already had reports of sexual harassment. This experience was horrible and misconducted that this person is unacceptable. I deter the people to do sexual harassment to other people. And that day, I lost my job interview.

To work at Ahuntsic College.

By becoming a teacher I'll get job satisfaction that few will experience, because I think the teachers have a big influence on the student's life. I find it great to be able to interact daily with my pupils, and to discover those brilliant minds of each of them. Be a teacher is not drudgery, on the contrary this is a challenge because I need always have to be updated and I should know how to manage the behavior of young people. I think correcting the essays is the drive of work of this profession. For me is a good opportunity to set aside for my future because this is a steady job where I can start saving money for my pension, I could also pay my mortgage, and if one day I want to start my family, I will really enjoy them because I will have vacations at the same time as them. All this sounds great but I wonder if this could be my true vocation?

Work in a private clinic is a worthwhile because it can offer me the experience that I need. But I have some bias because I heard that there are many corruptions in these places, which I consider is drawback. People say that employee theft some objects of the other people while they are passing their medical examination. I also heard that some receptionists accept bribes to advance the date of exams of the patient because they think that their wage is not enough. I would't like to work with this kind of people because they are ingrained.

Choice 1 : No internship and go straight go to work

To make volunteering Abroad.

To make volunteering abroad could help me to gain new skills and work experience. I know a few people who did these kinds of programs, and they are very satisfied with the living experiences that these places gave to them. This is the best way to learn new cultures and new friends while creating lasting bonds. I think that helping others provides fulfillment.

I would like to be a volunteer in Africa because is time to give something back to the community, I would like to make a difference in the life of this people. I am sure that is an invaluable opportunity to develop new skills and knowledge. The program says that they will give us a premium wage but for me it isn't necessary because is not my purpose. The only drawback for me, is to leave my comfort zone and be away from my family.

Volunteer in Latin America.

I have two option if I want to be volunteered in Latin America, but I am a skeptical to go to these places, because of the security. I don’t know what to do! I need to calmly analyze these two options.

Choice 1 : Volunteering Abroad in Mexico.

Choice 2 : Volunteering Abroad in Venezuela.

I would like to contribute in the most meaningful way possible by volunteering in this country because I know there are regions in this very poor country that don't have medical assistance. And I would like to learn about his culture, his language, his food and his history. And I want to have many Mexicans friends because they are always happy. But I’m afraid of being kidnapped by a drug cartels because everybody says undermine things about this country and his authorities. The corruption is the principal problem in this society. I’m worried to get sucked up in this system, I don't want anyone to hinder my work and be forced to pay some bribes for my security.

Volunteering Abroad in Venezuela.

Recently I read an article where it says that the Canadian government warned the Canadian community not to travel to Venezuela because is very dangerous place toward foreign travelers, due this country has too many economic problems. I don't want to be exposes to armed robbery, kidnapping or even murder.

It is the first time that I heard that a hospital offers legwork, which would be great for me, because I would like to work abroad and to know new methods and new cultures. I am interested in learning the new technological methods in cardiology.

Working at the hospital in Montreal.

Working at the hospital in Montreal is also a very favorable job offer, this hospital has two departments one of cardiology and another to do encephalograms, both of which are very important to my personal growth but one of them is less stressful than the other. What should I do?

Choice 1 : Working in the Cardiology Department.

Choice 2 : Work in the Encephalograms Department.

Working in the Cardiology Department.

Working in this department is a big challenge because we work on stress and a lot of pressure, when we work in the emergency room, every minute count because it depends on saving the life of a patient. During my internship, a patient came to the emergency room in a critical state, the electric door of his garage fell on his chest, I had to connect the electrodes in his chest, to record the electrical activity of his heart and at the same time there was a team of doctors and nurses doing their work. There was little space to work, I record his vital signs was very difficult, my heart was very much stalked by so much adrenaline, when finally I managed to connect him to the machine, the patient makes a cardiac arrest. The doctor told me to start cardiac reanimation at what the defibrillator whiles the defibrillator arrived. Thank God, we could save the patient.

Work in the Encephalograms Department.

This department makes electroencephalograms (EEG). One day in my internship, I should do these test to detect electrical activity in the brain of the patient using small electrodes, attached to his scalp. At the time that I was doing this the patient started doing an epileptic seizure and I didn’t know what to do if I help the patient and put him in safety or continue recording the study. Sometime, in the area of health we have to make quick decisions! The brain is a perfect machine and the EEG helps us to understand it and it helps us to detect certain anomalies such as epilepsy, other brain disorders or tumors.

Working in equipment companies.

Work in a large Cardiology equipment company was a great option to start my career. I learned the pacemaker's ropes and it put me a foot in the door for my future because I met several professionals in different hospitals. I quit this company because the work environment was too heavy more often than not my co-workers were fighting for the customers, they withhold all the information for themselves, and usually they do office politics, they were hinder my work and sometimes they undermine about me. All the time I was overwhelmed, I had to do overtime without pay because I did not receive any kind of training and I had to look the information for myself.
