Now or never!

End of college!

I can not believe it. I am finally done with college! After climbing through mountains of homework and charging threw countless sleepless nights, I now stand with my head high because I now have before me a piece of paper that validates my existence. Equipped with my newfound status, I yearn to build a legacy career, but first I need a solid starting point to build upon. There are many ways to put myself out there. I can apply for an internship or freelance.

Choice 1 : Start an internship in a tech company.

Choice 2 : Freelance with craigslist.

college life

Freelance with craigslist.

I finally received a call from an unknown number, after two weeks of dead silence. As my finger gets closer to the answering button, thousands of images flash through my mind. What if Elon Musk is at the other end of the line? I pick up and after what feels like an eternity a raspy voice finally conjures up. He says he needs someone to fix his old microwave. As a computer science student who has mastered the art of recursion and cryptography but has also contributed to open-source projects and dynamic algorithms, this feels like a huge insult. My time is worth so much more.

Choice 1 : Try again.

Start an internship in a tech company.

Today is the day. Today is my day. Today is the day that defines my career. I have been waiting for this very moment my whole life. I put on my best shirt and head to the company’s headquarters for my first day as an intern. As I sit patiently in the waiting room with other anxious Interns, I cannot help myself from having second thoughts. What if I do not have what it takes to make it here? What if they ask me to name the different types of sorting methods? I forgot how quite search works. Should I leave?

Choice 1 : Take deep breaths and do not let myself get overwhelmed.

Choice 2 : I bolt out of the room.

Take deep breaths and do not let myself get overwhelmed.

The company has accepted to take me under their wing. I start my on the job training and get to learn the ins-and-outs of the profession with real life examples. The environment is dynamic, and every day has something new and exciting reserved for me. With my foot in the door, I can now start planning a prosperous career. I learn the ropes on how to write an effective query, how to maintain a server, properly use foreign keys and gain aces to gateways. However, as a trainee, I am in placed in a difficult financial situation. With no stable stream of income, every week is a struggle to make ends meet. It is lunch break at the office and while everyone is out eating, I stay behind to contemplate my dire situation. As I sit there with an empty stomach, I notice that the internal projections of the company are laying in the recycling bin. Should I try to sell the report to the company's competitor?

Choice 1 : Sell the sensitive information to the company competitor.

Choice 2 : Continue to work hard.

Sell the sensitive information to the company's competitor.

I smuggle the report out of the office and sell the sensitive information to the company competitor for a hefty price. The money I received from my unethical deal has changed my standards of living, why had I not thought about doing this much sooner! With a pumpkin spice latte in hand, I savor my newfound comfort. Who knew that corruption could feel so great! At that moment, another intern approaches me. He claims to know what I have done and plans to denounce me to the authorities.

Choice 1 : Deny any wrong doing.

Choice 2 : Make him an offer he can't refuse.

corruption

Deny any wrong doing.

My plan was clever, but his plan was genius. I thought, I had erased all the video evidence from the main server. However, I forgot the backup footage from the cloud. His threats were not baseless after all…. Before I can even understand what is going on, the police are already at an arm's length. I stand in defeat, I have been outed as a thief.

Choice 1 : Try again.

police car

Continue to work hard.

I continue to work hard and put aside the desire to undermine the company for a short-term gain. I quickly become an asset in the workplace due to my vast knowledge in encryption and sharp eye on detecting potential viruses. My reputation becomes a force not to be wrecked with.

Choice 1 : Building a house of cards, I use my reputation to dabble in office politics.

Choice 2 : Negotiate for better position.

Build a house of cards, I use my reputation to dabble in office politics.

I know that it takes more than dedication to climb to the top. Accomplishment is gained by pulling the strings in the background. Misconduct is only a crime if you get caught. I start to build my influence by befriending the HR department. With their authority on my side, I am able to abolish my competition. I do so by withholding important information from the other programmers, such as the changed deadlines and the new customer requests. Once the department fails to deliver the promised product, I pin the blame on lazy coders that need to be fired. The over worked programmers try to defend themselves, however HR quickly dismisses their objections. Powerless, they have no other option, then to accept their pitiful demise. The bubbly feeling of victory needs to be celebrated. I think about throwing a party with HR or to celebrate by myself.

Choice 1 : Invite HR to a party.

Choice 2 : Party alone.

house of cards

Negotiate for better position.

With my head high, I go marching to the boss’s office to negotiate a better position. With all the vacant positions in our office, I am sure the boss can find something new for me. As an employee, I could finally get played vacations or enough income to set aside for a mortgage. As I enter the boss’s office, I am meet with contempt. I try to withhold my anxiety. However, my facial expressions betray me. With the scrap of confidence left inside me, I explain how much I have contributed significantly to the creation of a successful social media presence and how my new operating systems have increased dramatically the productivity of our production chain. His shriveled face remains unfazed. After what feels like an eternity of agonizing silence, he finally barked at me for being such an ungrateful intern and informs me that the sole person to judge what I deserve is he and only he. After, a brutal scolding, he orders me to pack my stuff and leave. I contemplate giving him a piece of my mind or to leave quietly.

Choice 1 : Leave quietly.

Choice 2 : Give him a piece of my mind.

I bolt out of the room.

Overwhelmed with fear, I grab my coat and sprint to the exit door. The security guard fearing I have committed a crime, starts chasing me. Not wanting to get tackled with the force of a fridge, I sprint even harder. Unfortunately for me, right outside the building a delivery truck was passing by at a speed that can only be described as unsafe. It's too late, my kinetic energy is too strong to attempt to stop. I close my eyes and accept my faith, in less than a nanosecond my existence as I know will stop existing.

Choice 1 : Try again.

cemetery

Find a Job.

I leave the internship with my dreams abolished and feeling powerless, but I cannot be too bad. Right? The next day I apply for a job but after waiting patiently, I get no response. One week turns in to a month, a month turns into a year. It finally dawned on me, I have been blacklisted.

Choice 1 : Try again.

homeless

Give him a piece of my mind.

Instead of leaving the room as he demanded, I stay and give him a cold and collected stare. I readjust my glasses and with a soft voice express how dreadful it would be if the firewalls of his company were to go down, especially knowing that there is not any dedicated coder to rebuild it. His attitude radically changes, he gets visibly more agitated, but I pretend to not notice. I persist with my monologue. I explain how expensive it would be if our web host was to stop accepting the customers SQL demands. The boss gives a fake chuckle and says that such an event could never have happened. I inject by telling him it has already happened twice in the span of a month and more often than not such an event is bound to happen again. His discomfort turns into anger. He yells at me to leave.

Choice 1 : I stand my ground.

Choice 2 : Leave quietly.

I stand my ground.

As his finger points to the door, my rage becomes too strong to contain. As an intern, I had the hopes of climbing the ranks, earn a premium wage, find a purpose, but instead I was met with ingratitude and contentment. I sacrificed a lot of weekends to do overtime, to make this business grow. All that effort for nothing. My blood was boiling, my vision was revenge red, but I can not recall what happened next, as I have seamed to have blacked out. However, judging by the mess everywhere, things did not end amicably.

Choice 1 : try again

fire

Invite HR to a party.

I throw a party and invite HR. I spoil them with fancy alcohol, further solidifying our allegiance. The next week, I am informed that I am to fill a vacant position. The benefits that come with it are amazing. Furthermore, I am entitled to a personal office with a powerful PC and impressive CPU perfect for rendering and building multiple sandboxes. With this impressive equipment, I am set up for success.

Choice 1 : Continue to work at the company!

pc gear

Party alone.

I go to the liquor store and buy one of each! With music blasting through my room, I drink to my heart’s desire. One cup after another, reality starts to look like a sim simulation, the music starts to sound like randomized frequencies. My vision becomes pixelated. I wake up in a hospital bed, the nurse beside me informs me that I have been in a coma for two weeks, and that more likely than not, I am bound to spend a couple of weeks in the intensive care unit. As she leaves, I open my cellphone, only to get bombarded with frantic text messages from my colleagues. The first few messages seam worried, however my silence only makes them resentful. The last message is from the boss, who lets me know not to bother coming back.

Choice 1 : Try again.

Hospital bed

Continue to work at the company!

It has been a few years now, my mortgage is paid, and my worries have evaporated. As a retired person, I breathe with ease knowing that my pension is enough for the rest of my retirement. Retiring is much more than setting aside money, it is also an opportunity to reinvent oneself. Before my life as a retired person, I would stress for the smallest of things, and now it seems that every day is a Sunday. This morning, I bought myself a Lamborghini with the money I had set aside. Why such lavish expense you may ask? Well, because I deserved it! After all those years of drudgery, it is time to enjoy the finest things in life. I loved the drive of work that came with my job. I appreciated the environment and mastered so much as an employer that I would have not traded those years for anything else. However, retires have a better quality of life. Indeed, just in the span of a few months, I saw a lot of things and went to so many places. In those foreign places, I ate unique and exquisite foods that changed my way of seeing food forever.

Choice 1 : Play again?

rich man

Hush money.

The intern’s tone of voice seams to be determined to rat me out. However, by the look of his sunken check bones and pale skin, it seems to me that with a few free lunches, I could buy his silence. I bribe him with a subway and a couple of bucks. He does not refuse the gift. In a span of a week, word gets out that I bribed the other interns. I shriek at the other intern, but he absolutely denies gossiping. Either way, I am in deep trouble. Apparently, word has not yet reached the boss and I do not think they have proof of my crime. I can try to play it cool as a cucumber and stay, or I can flee before it's too late.

Choice 1 : Play innocent.

Choice 2 : Find a Job.

Play innocent.

I continue to work as an intern and play innocent, there seams to be no way of tying me to my crime. However, my reputation is destroyed. I am alienated from the rest of the colleagues. With everyone skeptical of me, it seems that I can no longer climb the social latter. I can not bare to continue debugging messy classes and poorly inherited interfaces for pennies on the dime. Just the other day I was debugging a method with a break statement instead of a boolean. I hate what I do, i feel trapped.

Choice 1 : Leave the internship to find a job.
