An Engineer Life.
The beginning to everything.
I just finished my two years of Cegep and I have to choose between three universities. I already know I want to become a geological engineer, but in which school? The Montreal University is near, and I don’t have to move, but maybe it would be good for me if I went to another city, like British Colombia or Toronto? Each one has its advantages and disadvantages, so I should just choose one at random. My gut will probably choose the right fit for me.
Choice 1 : Montreal University (Polytechnic).
Choice 2 : British Colombia University.
Choice 3 : Toronto University.

I finished my last semester at the Montreal University, it was a great experience. I made a lot of friends and I never want to leave my city anymore. I learned a lot of things about the interesting subjects from my field of study: types of soil, types of metals, types of gemstones, etc. I think it is the perfect job for me. I am ready to start working, and very excited about it. Two vacant engineer positions are available now, which one should I pick?

At first, I thought it was a great job and such a good company. My salary is way more than enough for me and there are a lot of benefits with this job. It’s my first year and I already have a paid vacation, but something is wrong. A 9 o'clock to 5 o'clock job is killing me, it is so boring. Every day I do the same thing, I must watch for potential erosion, hydro thermal alteration, magnetic anomaly and radioactive decay. The thing is, these things never happen, so I feel like my job is not important. I had a few breakdowns over the last year, my psychologist diagnosed me with depression, and he said it was because of my dead-end job. It was not the right job for me in the end.

First, they hired me as a trainee for this job. Nobody told me anything because I was only the girl that came in handy sometimes. However, now I know the big secrets of this company. I was not included in the office discussions or even the debates between employees, now I am. The company I am working for is rich, very rich, but it is not “good money”. The oil we are extracting from the ground is in a natural Park, we are not allowed to do so. It is slowly killing the surrounding environment. This job is scaring me a little bit and does not correspond to my values, should I quit?

I undermined my life by staying in this job position, I am in big trouble. I shouldn’t have put aside my values. The company got sued and must pay for it. The amend is so enormous that the boss had to declare bankruptcy and lose all of their assets. I am losing everything too because I am a witness of these activities. That is what corruption leads too. I should have left when I had the chance.

British Colombia University.
When I arrived in British Colombia, I already loved it! There are so many things to do here, it’s a beautiful city. I finished my first year of university and I must choose between two internships to do this summer. They both look fun, but I need to find the best one between a charcoal mine and a newly discovered cave. In the first one, I will learn the types of rocks, minerals and maybe crystals too if I am lucky. In the second one, I will analyze stalactites and stalagmites of limestone that hang from the ceiling or come out of the ground. Which one looks best for my first internship?
Choice 1 : The charcoal mine.

I was even luckier than I thought I would be, I found hidden gold in the mine! It shines like the sun! They put me in charge of the extraction, so I am now very rich. I gave some money to the other students who were with me, to my kind teacher too, and it still leaves me with a lot of money. Being an intern is the best thing that never happened to me! I don’t need to work anymore; I can quit school and live the rich life. I can also keep studying and become an engineer anyway. That is a rough decision, which path should I take?

I decided to retire from work very early, I didn’t even have the chance to start. It doesn’t matter anymore because I am living my best life. I am always on vacation, always eating from the restaurant, always out of my house and always having fun. That is the problem, I did not pay attention to my bank account. Yesterday, I realized that I don’t have anything left, I am poor. I lost everything and now I have no other choice than live in the street. Why am I like this?

I kept studying, but now everyone knows that I am rich, and they are treating me differently. I can’t trust anyone in this school, they are a threat to me. When I get back to my house, I notice that it is empty, completely empty! A theft! I got robbed! I get a call at the same time; it is from the bank. The woman tells me that they couldn’t do anything, the robbers took all my money. I have nothing left, being rich is the worst thing that happened to me.

The cave.
I am visiting this beautiful cave, and at the same time, learning the ropes of how to rock climb. I think it is kind of dangerous, because we are the first one to explore it. Anyway, the tunnel is full of volcanic rocks, and I am learning a lot about the bedrock of the earth. Then, the teacher says to us that it might get a little tricky to continue our thorough expedition, should I climb out of the cave and get out of here with the other scared students?

I had a bad feeling, and I am unfortunately right; we are in a volcano chimney! I see lava coming out of the walls and it is so hot! We need to run for our life! I am going to be traumatized for the rest of my life! Don’t ever talk to me about geology, I don’t want to hear it!

Get out of this cave.
I had a bad feeling about this place, I think it is the right choice to leave and go back home. I am slowly climbing towards the exit, but then my friend above me unhook a rock from the wall and it falls right on my head. I lose consciousness and wake up in the hospital. Wait, I don’t remember anything. Who am I? Why am I here?
Choice 1 : Start over.
Toronto University.
Why did I want to go there exactly? Toronto is so boring; I hate it here. Montreal was way better, I should have stay home with the people I know. There is not even a good internship in this school and my classes are all theoretical and never practical. I know it is important to know how a topographic map works, but there is so much more to learn. The people in this place are hindering me, everyone is very competitive. That is why I got sucked up in the idea of leaving the country and work someplace else when I graduate. Or maybe I should switch to another university now?

I finally graduated in engineering! I pulled it off! I am going to work abroad, because a company in Italy hired me. I am on a plane, but it looks like something is wrong with the wings. The pilot says we need to do an emergency landing. Suddenly, the plane is out of control, it is shacking and crashing. I find myself on a deserted island in the middle of nowhere. I am the only survivor; it is a miracle. How am I supposed to survive alone? I don’t think I can… Can I?
Choice 1 : Try to survive.

It’s been several months since I am on this island. I am starting to feel like nobody is going to save me, and that is okay. I have enough food and water, I exercise, I explore, and I depend on myself only. It is so calm, with the sound of waves. I feel like home here. What do I see, far in the sea? A boat! I could make a fire and it will certainly notice my presence. However, I hesitate, I feel so great on this beach. Should I light the fire and get saved? Or pretend I haven’t seen it?

I lit the fire and the boat changed its trajectory to come save me from this island. I feel kind of bad to leave everything I have build behind me. But surely, I better life is in front of me. When I arrived in Toronto, they brought me to the hospital. They think I am completely crazy and out of my mind. They all thought I died; all my stuff is gone. Of course, I forgot everything too. The only thing I can do is start over, at the Toronto University.

Stay on the island.
That was a good choice, probably the best choice I have ever made. I found my purpose in life, on this island. It has been two years since the plane crash, and I plan to stay here for the rest of my life. I had difficulties for sure, but everything is much better here than in any city or any job in the world. This is the life that is made for me. My bad luck turned into good luck.
