My Career as a Microbiologist
The beginning of college.
You were in your last semester of cegep and you were graduating this year. You applied to many universities and it was time to choose the program you wanted to study in for next year.
Choice 1 : Major in microbiology.
Choice 2 : Major in administration.
Major in microbiology.
You decided you wanted to study microbiology because you liked working with your hands and manipulating things. When becoming a microbiologist, you also knew that there was a diversity of fields you could work on. You could, for example, work in the environment field, health field and food industry, but your dream and your purpose has always been to work in the environment field.

You decided you wanted to study management, not because you liked this area of study, but because your dad put pressure on you. Indeed, in your family everyone has a master’s degree in management, and you did not want to disappoint them. Your older cousin who knew you really well, who worked as a director in a company and who just took a leave of absence because he was sick, told you that you wouldn’t like working and studying in the management field because it didn’t match your personality type.

You continued your studies because you did not want to disappoint your dad and you eventually graduated. After your internship, you started working in a really good company and you even got a premium wage, but you still felt like you were working in a dead-end job. You also felt that you didn’t have the drive of work because you didn’t like your job. You were unhappy for the rest of your life, although your family were very proud of your work.

After a tough first semester, you realized that this path was not made for you and after an in-depth thinking you decided to stop studying management and that you would start studying microbiology instead. Everyone in the family were disappointed in you, but at least you thought that you made a choice that would make you happy.

You really liked what you were studying whether it was viruses, microorganisms, pathogens, the immunodeficiency of the human body, anatomy, enzymes... You seemed to like everything. You even graduated with straight A’s on your Organic Chemistry, Neurology and Molecular Biology classes. It was now time to decide where you wanted to work.

As a native French speaker, you founded everything difficult because it was in English and you felt that the intense atmosphere of competition between students was maddening, but you still managed to complete your first session. It was now, the winter break and to reward yourself for this difficult session that you just passed you wanted to go on a trip. You could choose between either a trip where you would go volunteering, or a trip where you would go on a vacation alone.

You chose to go on a trip with an organisation where you would volunteer. You volunteered as an English teacher and you suddenly realized that this was your dream career. You felt like being a teacher would give you an intense sense of fulfillment. After that trip, you went back to Canada, restarted your studies all over again and graduated. You worked happily ever after as an English teacher for the rest of your life.

You decided to go on a vacation trip alone, but one day when you were tanning on the beach on a sunny day, you got bitten and infected by a super dangerous bug. You immediately got a headache and your heartbeat and heart rate increased. You then felt nauseous, started vomiting, got dizzy and then soon after that, you got a heart attack. You died on the spot.

You started working in a hospital. You enjoyed working there because you felt that you came in handy. You were getting sucked up in many projects at the same time such as research about bacteria living in the human intestines and bacillus. Unfortunately you did not feel satisfied because you initially wanted to work in the environment field.

You started working for a private company that study bacteria that lives in marine animals. It turned out you had a boss that had bias against women and had more often than not office politics.

While you were looking for a new job, a friend contacted you to inform you that there was a vacant position in a certain company because someone took their retirement. The only problem was that that job was in the food industry.

You continued working for that company. When working on a project regarding malignant cells of penguins, you realized a few days later the growth of a neoplasm on your arm and when you consulted with a doctor you got diagnosed with cancer. You then realized that you probably got infected because you probably had not disinfected well your hands after closing the Petri dish containing the malignant cells. Although you took your drugs adequately, you passed away a week later.

You decided to take the job. After a background check, you got accepted. You were officially a trainee. It was your first day at your new job when you realized that this company you would be working on was actually a company that was a specialist in the bio restoration of contaminated soils and that you completely misunderstood your friend! Working in what you really like and accomplishing your invaluable dream, you spent the rest of your life as the happiest person ever.

You decided to not take the opportunity because you did not want to work in the food industry. You now had no job, no income and you were not able to pay your bank loans anymore. On a sunny day, you were walking on the street and you saw someone drop their wallet.

You gave the wallet back to that person who was actually an old man and it turned out he was a director of a laboratory that conducts research on plants. To thank you for your generosity, he gave you a position at his company. You accepted and you lived happily ever after.
