My future career.
An important decision for my future.
I am trying to find a job that will fill my need for action but also that will allow me to help and support those in need. I consider the career of a police officer, so I decide to apply in the program of Police Technology. There are 12 different schools in the province of Quebec that offer this program. Those in Montreal are the ones that interest me the most.

I have been called in on the next Saturday to participate in the physical tests. I have been working out since almost a year, so I'm feeling confident. On the other hand, I'm very stressed for the swimming test because I have never been good at swimming. As I was fearing, I received my answer a month later claiming that I did not make it. Try again.

College is really different from high school. From now on, I need to manage my time to be able to pull off straight A's despite my busy schedule. It is maddening to work 30 hours a week, to follow all of my courses while trying to keep a social life with friends, lovers, and family. Time management is the key to success. Sometimes, I have to put aside some school homework in order take time for myself when I feel overwhelmed. Obviously, it is truly understandable. I try to put a maximum of effort to submit thorough and thoughtful homework because education is really important to me.

It has been 3 years since I started working for the SPVM. I begin to regret this decision because I realise that working in this big city is not quite made for me. Citizens here see me as an enemy, a bad person. But in reality, I’m just here in the purpose of offering my help to those in need. People don't see all the good things we do for them. They only focus on the bad that they see. They focus on the police brutality they see on the media, but then they treat me like I am one of those horrible people too, but I am not. Those 3 years of accumulating negativity begin to make me feel overwhelmed by this job. I consider either asking for the help of a psychologist or to continue my career as if nothing bothered me.

It's the 24th May, and I am patrolling the streets in the city of Joliette. I am with my coworker Josh today, a quite lazy man. While we are stopped at a red light on the principal avenue, I notice a woman crying hardly in her car. My coworker doesn't even bother but I have a feeling that she needs help. I keep observing her and I see her taking a piece of paper and a jug of pills in her hand. That seems abnormal to me, so I decide that me and Josh are going to go talk to that woman. He tries to convince me that we shouldn't try to help her but fortunately I was the one driving, so he didn't have the choice to follow me.

Continue my career even if I am feeling overwhelmed.
I decided not to ask for any help because I thought it would stop affecting me. That I would get used to it and create a shell. Unfortunately, it never stopped budging me. I developed a severe depression. This diagnosis is quite frequent in the field of police. I have to interrupt my career for my own mental and physical health. Try again.

You ask to have access to a psychologist.
I see a psychologist every week for the past few months. I feel like it is truly helping me to process everything that happened. I can finally say that I'm doing great again and that I want to pursue my career. However, I feel like specifying myself in a new department would be a better choice for my mental health. I'm thinking either specifying myself in the investigation department or to teach to future police officer during their technique.
Choice 1 : Return to University for a few years.

Save the woman.
After an hour of talking and reassuring the lady, we have been able to bring her to a mental health unit because she admitted to us that she was on her way to take her own life. I was right that we had to go see her and offer our help. I knew I had to trust my guts. She thanks us for saving her life. This intervention comes to the ears of our lieutenant, and he offers me the position of sergeant in my team because he considers me as a good police officer but also as a positive leader.

Trust your partner.
I feel lazy too, so I decide not to do anything and act as if I didn't see anything. Later that day, I find out that she took her life. I regret so much that I didn't do anything for her, so I take some time to myself and not go to work for a whole week. My boss doesn't like that at all, so he tells me that he will discharge me if I don't come back to work. I don't feel like I am able to do that, so I lose my job. Try again.

Accept the promotion.
I accepted the promotion and now handle a whole team by myself. It has its own difficulties but this job makes me truly happy and I know I chose the right career.

I decline this great offer because I already have the intention to transfer to the department of the mounted police since I have enough years of experience to apply there.

This job is more like community policing, but I still have to wear all my equipment even if I am on a horse. I have a bullet-proof vest, my pepper spray, my gun, my baton etc. It isn't so comfortable, but it's my biggest dream since I was 6 years old to be part of that team. I love this job. I get to see my horse almost every day. He brings me so much joy that I don't ever want to retire!

After four years at the University of Montreal, I can finally apply to become a crime investigator or a coroner. I would love to analyse crime scenes, do autopsy or also to investigate so both jobs would make me happy!

We all have a great chemistry together. We know when to be serious to do a great job for our society, but we also know when we can joke around together. We even have a tradition to eat donuts every Friday!

I teach them how to understand the Canadian criminal code, how to use their discretionary power and so on. It is a great pleasure for me to pass on my knowledge to these future police officers.
