What should you do after high school?

You just finished high school! After five long years, you are finally near your goal of doing your dream job, which is being a correctional officer. In your second year in high school, you went to see the guidance counselor of your school to know how to reach your goal of doing what you want in the future. She told you that you will need to study in Youth and Adult Correctional Intervention in college. Well, now that you are done with high school, you need to decide in which college you want to apply or even if you want to apply now.

Choice 1 : Maybe Ahuntsic College is for you.

Choice 2 : Let’s go to Garneau College.

Choice 3 : Too many years that you are in school, it’s time for a break.

Graduate

You are admitted to Ahuntsic College.

You are now admitted to Ahuntsic College and it asks you if you want to do your technique in three years or four. You think about it a lot and you finally decided to take apart the advantages and disadvantages of each choice. If, you make it in three years, you will be working earlier than if you do it in four years, but you know that you won’t have free time and you will have a bigger schedule with nine courses. So, you need to decide if you want to have time for a social life or mental health issues.

Choice 1 : It will take you all your time but three years is your choice.

Choice 2 : Four years are the best for you.

You are admitted to Garneau College.

You have the answer that you were waiting for, you are accepted in Youth and Adult Correctional Intervention at Garneau College! You are so happy to begin. The only trouble is that this college is in Quebec City, which means that you are far away from your friends and family for the first time in your life. You know that your field of study is very hard on mental health and you will need support. Once again, you think about it a lot and come with the conclusion that either you try to be admitted to Ahuntsic College which is near your family or you stay in Quebec City and you try to adapt yourself with your new environment.

Choice 1 : You decide to go for Ahuntsic College and your family.

Choice 2 : FaceTime exists to talk with your friends and your family. It’s Garneau College for the win.

It’s time to go back to school.

It’s been two years that you stopped school and you took time to travel around the whole globe. You are clearly fully relaxed, but you still have the same dream which is to become a correctional officer and you can’t reach it by doing nothing. So, you decide to start your study in Youth and Adult Correctional Intervention. For sure, you still have the same choices as when you finished high school. Even tho your favorite color is red, you can’t select a college only for this, you need to think about it.

Choice 1 : It was too difficult to decide, you went with your favorite color, red. Ahuntsic College for the win.

Choice 2 : Garneau College is your final choice.

Break

It’s internships time.

It’s been a year that you are in your field of study now and you are completely in your element. Each classes, criminology or either youth delinquency, you are always excited to learn more about it. Well, you are now at the time to go into your three observation internships. These internships last one day each and are in different environments. You have to try youth services, adult services as penitentiary and finally community services. Well, tomorrow is your first internship as a correctional officer. You have to choose your outfit following the rules to respect in jail for an employee as you saw in your class.

Choice 1 : It’s too hot outside, even though you can’t, you wear a tank top that shows the side of your chest.

Choice 2 : You wear a good t-shirt and jeans as you know that it is appropriate.

Internship

It is a "no " in capital letters.

You clearly know that was not the good outfit for a correctional officer. The person in charge of your internship sends you back home. Better chances next time.

Choice 1 : You go back home and tried again.

Refuse

During the internship.

You passed the outfit checkpoint. It’s been now 3 hours of the 8 hours that you have to do in Archambault Penitentiary and a prisoner yells at you and calls you very miserable names. Even if your accompanist is by your side, you need to react fast. In your head, three things come to your mind. First, you begin to cry. Second, you scream back at him, after what? You are the authority. Third, you let him calm down and interact with him as you saw in your communication classes and your correctional services classes. All this under the supervision of the correctional officer with you for your internship. It’s like an OTJ, no?

Choice 1 : First, choice.

Choice 2 : The second one seams to be the perfect option.

Choice 3 : Easy, it’s the third one.

You are done with those internship things.

It was only your observation internships, it was normal to cry or, even if it is not a good idea, to scream. You didn’t suppose to have to deal with this anyway but it showed you what the real correctional officer job is. Anyway, you are now done with those internship things.

Choice 1 : Finish your school.

Correctional officer

Some career opportunity.

You are now finished with your study at College. It was at the time favorite and worst years of your life but you are glad to be finished. You had the choice between doing your 15 weeks training becoming a correctional officer right after and start to work or going to the University in criminology. You chose to do your training in Kingston, Ontario for 15 weeks and you are now proudly doing your dream job for 7 years. You are surely one of the best in your work and that’s why your boss offers you to get back part-time at school, the penitentiary will pay for your study, to become a liberation officer. You think about it a lot, because even though you love your job, you are becoming old and you want some challenge.

Choice 1 : You go back to part-time school. Challenge accepted!

Choice 2 : Your job as a correctional officer is perfect like that and you don’t want to change anything.

Choice 3 : Your job is hard on your mental health. You need to see an expert.

Back to school!

You went back to school, in University and you are finally a liberation officer. You clearly love it!

Choice 1 : Happy life!

This is still the job of your dream.

To be a correctional officer has always been your dream and it will never change. This is your place.

Penitentiary

Mental health is important.

Working as a correctional officer can be really hard. Often, you receive insults, screams and even physical violence. You always need to be on your guards and it is very stressful. You ear stories that can hurt you and other that piss you off. You see people alone, crying because their family doesn’t want to see them, person who commits suicide. Well, a lot of things and it’s normal to ask for help because our mental health is important. Then, a correctional officer always needs to be alert, if not it can be dangerous. Well, the psychologist that you saw gave you two options, either you go see a specialist once a month minimum or you change jobs.

Choice 1 : You will do monthly visits.

Choice 2 : It is enough, a new life is waiting for you.

The best choice that you ever did.

You see change on your mental health and you clearly love it. You can continue to do what you like while being healthy.

It is the right choice to listen to yourself. Your body is telling you what to do and if you don’t listen to it, it can be dangerous. Well, a new start is waiting for you with your experience and your study many doors are open to you.
