The long journey of Software Engineering

My last year in high school.

This is my last year, finally! This is the end of general education and I will finally learn something specific, learn something that I like! Now I have to question myself to determine what I like and therefore what I want to do for living. Hum, let see. I like technology, wild life, environmentalism, sports, books. When can also take a look at my hobbies : running, reading, designing, keyboards (yeah, that is a hobby, like car is for some person). After searching for a while, I've decided that I want to become a software engineer. Now, which path do I take?

Choice 1 : Natural Science.

Choice 2 : Computer science degree.

high school

Natural Science.

Oh! Your science side chose! Now let's show to everyone how good you are in science (that is false but myself doesn't know). Because it is only two years of studies, I want to get the best experience out of it. So, I need to choose between some interesting college in Montreal.

Choice 1 : Gerald-Godin (NS degree).

Choice 2 : Saint-Laurent.

Choice 3 : Ahuntsic (NS degree).

Computer science degree.

I let the hobbyist part of me choose. I want to learn concrete things fast and be able to build something from what I have learned. As there are many, many colleges that offers this program, I decide that the closest are the best.

Choice 1 : Montmorency college (CS degree).

Choice 2 : Ahuntsic (Web and Mobile Development).

This school is so big! I keep losing myself moving from a block to another. Fortunately, except some grumpy one, teachers seams to forgive my delays because of my (alarming) enthusiasm for the courses. In program courses, I learn fast and keep pulling straight A's. For the basic courses, this is a different story. The courses are not bad and I have really good teachers, but they are no match for my program courses. Therefore, because I put them aside in my priorities, my time management is taking a hit. I finally pulled off in all of my courses for the first four sessions. It is now time to choose an internship!

Choice 1 : Internship at Nuance.

Choice 2 : Internship at Google.

Gerald-Godin (NS degree).

I literally fall in love with this college. It doesn't take too long before I know the vast majority of people that I study with. I start to learn programming by my own but with no help around and without knowing where are the resources, it doesn't go well. I go see a teacher to ask for help and his answer is not very friendly. He just tell me to give up because this domain is already crowd. I consider his answer and make up two options : 1 - continue learning, maybe take some courses and aim for the university in this field of studies 2 - stop making this my priority, focus on my other passions and maybe look for new ones.

Choice 1 : Learning base programming by myself

Choice 2 : Trying something else

college gerald-godin

Saint-Laurent.

I arrive at this school and I can already tell that I like its old style stone wall. I'm feeling as if I am in Hogwarts. However, I quickly disenchant because of the travel time. Almost two hours! This is very, very long. I woke up one morning and learn that the train will no longer be in operating state for renovation. I have to choose if I want to continue in this program or switch to a near college. To make your decision-making worse, a giant virus attack the earth, leaving you with only two choices : online courses or online courses. At least you have the choice. Also, pension is not a choice, because I'm broke (and I like living with my family).

Choice 1 : Change program (CS degree at Montmorency)

Choice 2 : Finish this program

college saint-laurent

Ahuntsic (NS degree).

I met after one week a computer science student, and we are friends! It didn't long for me to switch to the same program. IOS development!? Count me in.

Choice 1 : Ahuntsic (Web and Mobile Development).

Ahuntsic (Web and Mobile Development).

This is a beautiful school. I learn so much on programming that only my enthusiasm help me keep up with all the content. The basic courses fall a little bit off my schedule and I have to force myself to change my time management to keep pulling off in these courses. After a short period, I had learned IOS, Android and Microsoft application development, game development and web programming. This is why technical program are so worthwhile. Now the last session is approaching, and we have to choose between some internships.

Choice 1 : Internship at Google.

Choice 2 : Internship at Nuance.

Polytechnic Montreal (Software Engineering).

This path may be a little bit longer than other choices but I'm sure I get a lot of advantages from this (and some disadvantages, maybe). Polytechnic Montreal has a really good reputation in North America and that is the main purpose of my choice of university. Next step : working abroad!

Choice 1 : Wow, you have finished. Again?

Self learn programming.

This is it, the summer just started and I jump in front of my computer. It's time to get serious and learn some programming languages. I start my journey with Java, I do some C# on the go, I derive on Python and continue with web language - JavaScript, HTML and CSS -. The more I learn and the more I realise that the web is full of tutorial and courses that can teach me so much! At the end of the summer, I've learnt a lot of programming languages, of programming methods and techniques. With all the knowledge that I've accumulated, I just need to choose a university.

Choice 1 : Polytechnic Montreal (Software Engineering).

Choice 2 : École de technologie supérieure (Software Engineering).

self learning

École de technologie supérieure (Software Engineering).

I decide to go and join a club right from the start. I may get sucked in for some big work but I don't care. I feel like four years are not gonna be long enough! The more it go and the more I feel close to my dream jobs. Vacant positions, I'm aiming for you! I just need to not mess it up.

Choice 1 : One more?

some cool stuff

Internship at Google.

Wow, it feels like a dream. Almost everybody wants to work at Google and here I am, in one of the most popular companies in the world. The wage is super comfortable for an intern, and the workspace is so fun! I have access to a swimming-pool, climbing walls, ping-pong tables and so much more. But some drawbacks are already appears ; the job is stressful and as an intern, I feel unnecessary and the job is overwhelming most of the time. Maybe I'm wrong because they propose me a second internship and now I have one university's internship already schedule! I have a foot in the door of my dream company! I just have to choose my university now.

Choice 1 : École de technologie supérieure (Software Engineering).

Choice 2 : Polytechnic Montreal (Software Engineering).

Internship at Nuance.

Nuance Communications is a fantastic company. They won many awards like "Best enterprise to work for in Canada" (in Technology field) and I'm so excited to see how is engineers work. Most importantly, I can't wait to see the job ins-and-out. This is it, my first day of OJT (On-the-job-training) and my supervisor is very nice. He explains to me the mentality of the company and why, without being a huge company, it is a really praised company in terms of workspace and working atmosphere. The annual hackathons and the 16 hours of volunteering are very tempting. At the end of summer, I can just say that I really loved my time there. I quickly learned the ropes and enjoyed my time there. I didn't get any misconduct mention (I'm joking, right?)! Now it's time to choose a university!

Choice 1 : École de technologie supérieure (Software Engineering).

Choice 2 : Polytechnic Montreal (Software Engineering).

The end need a restart.

I admire my courage but this is worse and worse, maybe the worst? The online courses, which were already pretty boring, are impossible to follow in front of a black screen. The good part is that I learned something : science teachers are very slow with technology. I only good choice here is to call my fairy godmother to end this mess and restart.

Choice 1 : Definitely restart

dead end

It's time for something else.

This is it. My software engineer journey end here. I think I should focus more on my drawing or writing skills, something where fulfillment is full. No more dream of premium wage while doing a passion, now it's just the passion thing. Bye-bye the possibility of a dead-end job, say hello to some abroad mission. Maybe volunteering is an option now, we never know.

Choice 1 : Maybe restart?
