The end of the first chapter.

I am 20 years old. I have just finished college in Social Sciences program at Montmorency College. I am about to make the most important decision of my life. Do I continue my studies or do I go directly to work?

I decide to go to work. Indeed, until now I have spent 13 years of my life going to school and I think it's enough. There are so many other things more important than studying. Not everyone needs to study hard.

I work full time as a cashier and make minimum wage. When I started working, I was trained by an employee. She has been working for a long time, she knows the ins and outs, so she takes care of the supervision of the trainees. I don't think there is a better way to learn than on-the-job training. There's no downside. The trainer is someone you can trust. He or she will not teach you bad habits. On the contrary, he will give you advice on how to do the tasks well. After a few months, the supervisor offered me a promotion because he thought I was doing a great job.

Since I have been promoted, I have noticed that my colleagues are changing their behavior towards me. Nobody talks to me anymore. They start talking about me and making rumors. Everyone is prejudiced against me. This has damaged my reputation. When I saw that someone was putting obstacles in my way, I did not hold back. I took the next best thing: talking to my supervisor to resolve the issue. After that, I didn't have a problem, so when you are in a toxic environment, you have to do everything in your power to get out of it.

I made a big mistake by not accepting the promotion. Since I live alone, it is very difficult for me to pay for the apartment and have enough money to eat. By deciding not to speak up, I made a big mistake. My boss is still sexually harassing girls and nobody knows about it. All the recipients are suffering. This has a huge psychological impact on the victim.

My parents always wanted me to become a lawyer. However, it's their choice. I'm not interested in studying. I would have liked to do something else. I can either concentrate on my studies or leave school to have fun and do what I like.

Even though I don't like it, I stay and make the effort. During the week, I focus on school and put aside all distractions. On weekends, I have fun and spend time with my friends. In class, I try to pay close attention and ask questions. At night, I review my notes. Now I get straight A's.

I am doing something that is very important to me: I decide to do a humanitarian trip abroad. At first, I thought that there were too many disadvantages like not being able to earn money. However, I realize that there are many more advantages than disadvantages. For example, being a volunteer brings me to meet new people, learn a new language, makes me realize how lucky I am to live in Canada, brings me the satisfaction of helping people in need, and allows me to acquire new skills.

Ever since I was little, I wanted to become a teacher. It's something I've always been passionate about. Being a teacher is a profession that gives you respect from others. The main purpose of the teacher is to share knowledge. Teachers must want to make a difference in the lives and futures of their students. It's a very satisfying job because children are a source of happiness. Now I have to decide if I want to do an internship in an elementary or high school.

I am doing my internship in a math class. Unlike an elementary school teacher, there is only one subject and several groups. Today, we did algebra. This internship allowed me to learn the ropes and get a foot in the door. OJT is the best way to learn how to do a task. It allows you to be confronted with real situations that you can only experience on the job.

I do my internship in a 4th grade class. In the first period, we correct the assignment. In the second period, we do a little bit of history to prepare for the exam that is coming up. Then, it's time for recess. When we come back, we take the time to relax and read a book. Finally, at the end of the day, we do a little math quiz with the whole class and the winner of the activity wins a gift. I love to see the children grow through their achievements. Also, thanks to me, they will be literate and have a lot of knowledge.
