It was my first experience as an intern for the police task force and I had a crucial choice to make about the way to handle the situation.

Choice 1 : Putting in the effort to prove myself as a good intern.

I was at my first day of an internship as a member of the police task force. The whole experience felt a bit like on-the-job-training but without a pay. I figured out that was okay since it gave me a foot in the door while coming handy for learning the ropes as a new intern. At first, I was quite overwhelmed by the sheer intensity that came with actually coming in contact with real people but after putting in the efforts necessary, I got used to it and I would even say that the test-drive went pretty well. I can’t wait to see what the future still holds for me! With that being said, I now had another important decision to make because after finishing my internship, 2 different police stations offered me 2 weeks of OJT followed by an actual job for the station!

I figured out that was not okay since it only gave me a foot in the door while coming a little bit handy for learning the ropes as a new intern. During the whole experience, I felt super overwhelmed by the sheer intensity that came with actually coming in contact with real people and I didn’t get used to it! I would even say that the test-drive went terrible because I didn’t put in the effort necessary to sum up the courage of getting in the flow of the work. I don’t want to know what the future still holds for me! With that being said, I now had another important decision to make because, after this awful experience, I decided to go volunteer abroad to get more experience before trying my luck in the police force once again.

It was my first day at this sketchy Police Station. The place had its drawbacks but I had taken the job because I was bias toward the good wage they were proposing. All of that to say I had two weeks of OJT as a trainee, offered after my internship, before becoming an official employee but after only a couple of hours, I was already heavily thinking about home. The place was a total bummer; undisciplined employees were always missing, making ins and outs of the station to go smoke cigarettes without even knowing the basics ins-and-out of their own profession, a sergeant who was to busy trying to figure out what was happening to orchestrate any kind of discipline and, on top of that, a dirty employees room where I wouldn’t even be comfortable eating were all pieces of a big puzzle making up a really toxic work environment. The worst part was still to come though, and it brought with it an even heavier decision to make when I I witness a clear act of sexual harassment between employees of this police station.

It was my first day at this amazing Police Station. The place had practically no drawbacks, the main reason why I had taken the job, but was not proposing the best wage out of all the stations. All of that to say I had two weeks of OJT as a trainee, offered after my internship, before becoming an official employee and after only a couple of hours, I was already amazed with how I hadn’t thought about going home once since my arrival. The place was a totally remarkable; disciplined employees were always around, making sure to help me learn the basics ins-and-out of the profession, a sergeant was also there helping the team to figure out what was happening at any giving time and orchestrating discipline when needed and on top of that a spectacular employees room where I would be comfortable eating for the rest of my life were all pieces of a big puzzle making up a really nice and welcoming work environment. In spite of this, every good thing has to end and in my case, that end came when I got caught up in some office politics, at work. In fact, some employees had withheld information to get me in trouble and that forced me to make yet another crucial decision.

After my problematic internship, I decided to go volunteer abroad to get more experience before trying my chance, once again, in the police enforcement. It was my first trip of that nature, so I was very excited and I wasn’t let down! I went to Thailand with other cadets from the SPVM to help villagers living in the outskirt of the city of Nonthaburi, where they don’t necessarily have access to clean water, build new wells so that they won’t have to walk as far every time they need water. Arrived at the camp, we made an in-depth analyse of the site where we needed to dig and started to be skeptical about having all the tools necessary. They were just too many rocks! That’s when the villagers intervened by lending us a special tool they had, which had the main purpose of breaking rocks. Seeing my group and the villagers cooperating was truly a beautiful moment of teamwork. I guess that’s one of the different advantages of volunteering abroad, not only do you come back with invaluable life-lessons and experience but you truly understand the meaning of cooperation. After that, I returned to multiple occasions before officially falling in love with the city and deciding to go settle down there and to pursue my career as a police officer in Thailand. After working my way up to sergeant in my new hometown, I had to make another major decision soon after realizing some of my police officers were receiving either bribes or threats ranging from the lost of assets to extortion and blackmailing coming from the cannabis industry to close there eyes on illegal activities.

Finally, following this trip, I decided that police work wasn't for me and decided to go work at a normal minimum-wage job. Before getting this job, however, I needed to decide about where I wanted to work.

I still and will always remember the time I witness a clear act of sexual harassment between employees of this police station. I was about 26 at a Christmas party and there was a guy, the perpetrator as you might call him, that look super cool going around making out with all my female colleges. Well, that was until I got a bit closer to the ‘’action’’ and saw him starting to flirt and make out with one of my friends. As I got closer and closer, I could start to hear their conversation going back and forth between some bad punch lines and some straight ‘’no’’ and ‘’stop’’. This is the moment I realized that the guy was clearly misconducting and my friend was clearly dreading the possibility of being the recipient of what was already a sexual assault. That’s when I decided to act and tried to deter the guy by saying ‘’she clearly told you to stop what are you doing’’ before another one of my drunk colleges tackled him screaming (while dressed as a Santa for Christmas) and I quote, ‘’get off my girl *obscenities*’’.

Even if it is not directly encouraged, the fact still is that more often than not, you’ll find it in every workplace and that’s exactly what happened to me when I got sucked up in other employees trying to undermine and sabotage me in my new work. For example, they once withhold information about the ratio of calls I had to respond to for the day. At first, it doesn’t look like much but once you have your sergeant asking you why the hell you’ve only answered to half the calls you needed for that day, it’s a whole different affair! I had to choose between telling my boss about it, which could potentially ruin my relation with those coworkers, or to try to be more careful about office politics by keeping trace of my work for example. I chose the latter as I didn’t want any trouble with my coworkers. I still have my guard up to date for any toxic coworkers who would try to pull another trick from their sleeve.

After it was brought to my attention that some of my police officers were receiving either bribes or threats ranging from the lost of assets to extortion and blackmailing coming from the cannabis industry to close their eyes on illegal activities. I decided to act and do everything in my power to keep that corruption from continuing to happen but it was on the sixth of July 2021, that the body of senior Sergeant Benoît, was found in the back of a black Cadillac in a ditch. My first job, after coming back, was for an organisation called ‘’Couche-Tard’’ which is everything but a small business. With more than 8000 branches all over the country and over 130 000 employees, let’s just say that the average minimum-wage worker at Couche-Tard was quite powerless. All of that to say that I still remember working there, staying an hour overtime every night because my colleague didn’t show up, thinking of how much of a lack of fulfillment I felt working at this place. I also remember thinking on a specific day of how sad it was that only a handful of people at the top of the organisation had all the accomplishments worthwhile while the hard-working every-day people like me only got a sense of alienation toward the company and its leaders.

My first job, after coming back, was for an organisation called ‘’La Papeterie Gilbert’’ which is a pretty small business. With only 1 branch located in Laval and barely about 10 employees, we could say that the average minimum-wage worker at ‘’La Papeterie Gilbert’’ had its fair share of power in the organisation. All of that to say that I still remember working there, never staying overtime, thinking of how much happy and fulfilled I felt working at this place. I also remember thinking on a specific day of how nice it was that again, every-day working people like me still had their fair share of accomplishments and didn’t feel a sense of alienation toward the company and its leaders that were, usually, among us. The experience continued being nice until I had to take my retirement in 2042, bringing once again, another, as important, decision to make.

I’ve always been someone who was really pushed by the drive of work at ‘’La Papeterie Gilbert’’ so when I had to retire in 2042, I was really dreading the idea of putting my work aside to start my new life. I didn’t have worries about money since I had my pension and quite a lot of money, that I had put aside but still, the idea of retirement was a weird one for me. Fast enough though, I got used to it with drudgery now replacing my old manual work and date night ideas now replacing worries about my mortgage. I guess this is what retirement is all about!

I will be thoughtful about every homework to make sure that they aren't handed cursorily.
