Sociology Hypertext Narrative.

This is how it starts.

I am done college. My future scares me a bit because I am afraid of taking a bad decision. I have an offer from the University of Quebec in Montreal to play with the volleyball team and become a sociologist. However, I would love to take a year off to volunteer abroad. What should I do?

Choice 1 : I should accept UQAM's offer.

Choice 2 : I should pack my bags and go to Kenya.

Lionel-Groulx College.

Internship in Serbia.

Serbia is my grandfather's homeland. I cannot choose a better country to study Sociology. I work as an intern at a shoe company and study the needs of consumers. The Serbian social actors do not consume like the Americans because they do not have as much money as them. I think the manager of the company has an eye on me because he always flirts with me. He often touches my waist. I do not feel comfortable with this situation but I can not talk to my boss about it because it is him. Should I talk about it with my teacher?

Choice 1 : I should talk to my teacher about this situation.

Choice 2 : I should not tell anyone.

Flag of Serbia.

UQAM.

I enter the world of adults. The Sociology program is so interesting! We study the different cultures of poor families of the world. I like discovering the different cultural environments and the identities that are created. To fully understand the ins-and-outs of Sociology, the program offers us an internship in Serbia or Australia. Which one should I choose?

Choice 1 : I should choose Serbia.

Choice 2 : I should choose Australia.

Poor family from the St-Étienne district in France

Volunteering abroad.

Helping people in need is an invaluable opportunity for me to discover in-depth the different cultures of the world and their living situation. Canada Airlines offers a volunteer trip to Kenya. If I decide to go, I can join a group that defends the rights of African elephants. Should I go?

Choice 1 : I should stay home and look for a trip later this year.

Choice 2 : I should defend the elephant's rights.

Flag of Kenya.

Defend Kenya's elephant rights.

After 20 hours of flight, I land in Kenya. A group of volunteers welcomes me and drives me to my lodging. Once I arrive, I discover that the windows in my room have no glass and that my bed is made of hay. I am loathed and would like to go home. However, a volunteer tells me that today's activity starts in 5 minutes. It is a safari to observe a family of elephants. What should I do?

Choice 1 : I should go back to Montreal.

Choice 2 : I should continue my trip and do the safari.

Traditional African homestead.

The safari.

I remember the purpose for which I am here. I board the truck and head with my team to the African plains. Our group leader, explains that Kenya is a beautiful country but it is very poor. He also tells us that wildlife is threatened because of the limited resources that are sometimes not even available to the population. As I observe an elephant family, I see poachers trying to kill the mother for the horns of her and her calf. I ask myself if I should stop them.

Choice 1 : I should stay in the truck because it is safer for me.

Choice 2 : I should stop the poachers.

Kenya's safari trucks.

The poachers.

I jump out of the truck and yell at them to stop. As the truck pulls away, they start to laugh and move closer to me. They look dangerous and I'm scared. Should I confront them or run away?

Choice 1 : I should confront them.

Choice 2 : I should run away.

Poachers observing a herd of elephants.

Run!

I start to run towards the truck. I run as fast as I can. Suddenly, I hear the mother elephant trumpeting. She protects me by blocking the poachers from running. Because of her, the truck driver sees me and pick me up. Everyone helps me to get back in the truck. On my way back, all the volunteers say I am brave. I'm proud of myself but I'm afraid for the rest of my days here. The leader offers me to return home. What should I do?

Choice 1 : I should go back to Montreal.

Choice 2 : I should finish my trip.

A mother elephant with her cub.

Finish my trip.

Because of my courage, I am crowned Volunteer of the Year. What an experience! I decide to stay here and help the elephants for the next year. Another great adventure awaits me.

Choice 1 : The end.

Elephants in the African Savana.

Confront the poachers.

I decide to confront them. They grab me and bring me to their camp. They speak in a language that I do not understand. They tie me up and I don't know how to escape. I think I'm stuck here for the rest of my life.

Choice 1 : The end.

African cultural village.

Stay in the truck.

Life is unfair. Even if I warn the group leader, there is nothing he can do because it is part of African culture. I am really disheartened. I don't want to be a part of this trip anymore. I want to go back home.

Choice 1 : The end.

Air Canada Airbus.

Keep this situation secret.

I think I am too worried. It is maybe his way to tell me that he really likes me. I am at the office and I walk towards the cafeteria, when I hear a secret conversation between the manager of the company and another businessman. They talk about offering bribes to the Serbian government to shut down other shoe companies in the country. They want to withhold the market! It is against the office politics of the company. What should I do?

Choice 1 : I should record him.

Choice 2 : I should pretend it is nothing.

Business man on the phone.

Talk to my teacher.

I need to talk to my teacher. As I explain my situation to him, he stops me. He tells me there is nothing he can do because it is not sexual harassment. I can not believe it. I must protect myself and return to Montreal.

Choice 1 : The end.

Sexual behavior.

Internship in Australia.

How beautiful is Australia! The locals are very welcoming. I study surf culture which is very popular here. The identity of surfers is created by the socialization of the different actors in this environment. They are like a big family where everyone has an important role. They help each other be better people and no one is part of an elite. For an assignment I need to hand in tomorrow, I watch a group of handsome guys practicing on Sydney's beach. One of them walks towards me. He asks me if I want to learn to surf. Should I say yes?

Choice 1 : I should definitely accept and learn to surf.

Choice 2 : I should continue my observations because my homework is due tomorrow.

Bondi Beach, Sydney, Australia.

Learn to surf with a handsome guy on Sydney's beach.

His name is Ryan, he has blond hair, blue eyes and tan skin. He lends me a board, and we head for the waves. He tells me about his life. He lives in Sydney and also studies sociology. What a coincidence! This is a worthwhile internship because I can study sociology with the man of my dreams. While I dream of my future with him, he pats me on the shoulder so that I can listen to him. He tells me the next wave is the right one. He explains the basics to me quickly but his explanations do not come in handy because the wave is approaching more and more. I want to impress him, so I stand up on my board and start surfing. He follows me. I am excellent. Once the wave is over, he congratulates me and invites me on a date. Should I go?

Choice 1 : I should go on a date with him.

Choice 2 : I should tell him I can't because I have a homework assignment tomorrow.

Silhouette of a woman holding her surfboard at sunset.

Date with Ryan.

He takes me to a secret beach. He is very intelligent and I get lost in his beautiful blue eyes. We talk all night. I wake up on the beach and Ryan is no longer there. I don't know where I am and what time it is. I miss my class and my assignment and I can't find my wallet. I'm lost. I rinse my face on the seashore and a shark attacks me. I hit my head on a rock and lose consciousness. When I wake up, I am in a hospital bed. I do not understand anything. One thing is certain, I can forget my dream of being a sociologist this year.

Choice 1 : The end.

Great White Shark.

Continue my observations.

I'm too embarrassed to go. I would love to get to know him, but I would rather watch people surf than practice it. Either way, I am here to study not to find love. I want to become a sociologist, so I won't let anyone distract me from learning the ropes of being one. However, I think this guy is very hot. Should I change my mind?

Choice 1 : I should change my mind and learn how to surf.

Choice 2 : I should end my trip without distractions.

Man surfing a wave.

Finish my homework due tomorrow.

I tell him I don't have time. To my surprise he says he can help me. We head to a cafe on the beach to finish my assignment. Ryan helps me understand the mediation that the surfing world has on its actors. Since then, Ryan helps me every night to succeed in my internship. I think I am falling in love with him. On the eve of my departure for Montreal, Ryan begs me to stay and continue my studies at the University of Sydney with him. Even though we're in love, I don't know if I should stay.

Choice 1 : I should stay in Australia with the man of my life.

Choice 2 : I should go back to Montreal.

Two lovers who represent the symbol of love.

Stay in Australia with Ryan.

I decide to stay with Ryan and finish my Sociology program with him. I surf every night at sunset after my school-days. I love my life here and I love Ryan. Thanks to this internship, I am now a sociologist for a surf company, I live with the love of my life and I have three children.

Choice 1 : The end.

A couple watching the sunset.

Return to Montreal.

I come back to Montreal. I miss Ryan and think of him more often than not but I have to focus on my studies. I believe in the future. Who knows, a trip to Australia is not expensive when you have a good wage and when someone waits for you.

Choice 1 : The end.

Montreal at night.

Record the conversation.

I take my cell phone out of my pocket, ready to press the red button when his assistant surprises me. He takes me by the arm and leads me to the principal's office. They sit me down on a chair and look at me fiercely. They fire me from the company and pay me a plane ticket to go back to Montreal.

Choice 1 : The end.

Iphone X.

Pretend it is nothing.

All I want is to become a sociologist, not an investigator. All I want is to finish my internship and stay focused. A few more days and I am at home. Even if I say nothing, I am stunned by the corruption of this company and by the misconducts of the director. This trip deters me to do another internship and my idea of this company is very ingrained. I can't wait to go home and be with my family again.

Choice 1 : The end.
