My soon-to-be career on Ultrasound Technique

The beginning of all.

Towards the end of my last year of high school, all the students of that last year had to choose in which field they were going to study. I was part of a group in which almost all of my friends already had an idea of what they wanted to do. Some wanted to be a dentist, others a lawyer but for myself, I didn't love those ideas. It was stressing me out a lot because I had three choices presented to me and I didn't know what to do. I could either take a year off, go to college, or study for a vocational degree. My family absolutely wanted me to go to college, but I wasn't sure yet. I told my friends about the idea that I had which was to be an ultrasound technician, and they all support me to go to college. It was fun to see that they cared.

Choice 1 : Take a year off.

Choice 2 : Go to college.

Choice 3 : Study for a vocational degree.

Take a year off.

First of all, it's important to know that for my parents the school is really important, and they would never have wanted me to take a sabbatical year. Everyone in my family has a college degree, so they all expect a lot from me. One day, I was very overwhelmed with my homework. It was the end of the year, so I had no energy and it was at that moment that I told my mom I wanted to take a year off. At first, she was skeptical and she didn't want to, but she always supported me on everything. She tried to talk to me, and she gave me advice. She told me that it was better if I keep studying. It worked because I completely changed my mind. More often than not, when young people take a time off, a lot of them don't come back because they too comfortable in their life working and making money faster. After a while, you no longer have the will to go back to school and that's what my mother didn't want to happen.

Choice 1 : Follow my mother's advices.

Choice 2 : Ignore my mother.

Follow my mother's advice.

If I follow my mom's advice, I will get a good career with a good income. I have more chance to be successful. I will be able to pull of a good future and to buy a beautiful house to welcome my kids and my family. Not having to worry about my future and my survival is one of the most important things in this world. Many people are not so fortunate and cannot afford not to worry. Nowadays, life is expensive and complicated, so I can't get sucked up by the laziness and the desire to wish that money will fall off the sky without doing anything.

Choice 1 :

Ignore my mother.

If I ignored her, I would lose a year for nothing and I will no longer want to go back to school because I would see money coming in faster but I will stay with the average salary all my life and with a dead-end job. I will not do something that I like and I will live with the drive of work for a very long time and I know that I'm not the type of person that needs that. After a while, I will regret my decision, but it would be too late. Also, I don't want to fight with my mother because I would have ruined my future.

Choice 1 :

Go to college.

A few days after the conversation I had with my mother, I decided to open my computer and to look at what schools had to offer as a study program because I really had no idea what I wanted to do. I did the St-Jérôme College, Montmorency College and Lionel-Groulx College. None of them were proposing things that I liked. Then, I remembered that one of my friends was going to Ahuntsic College and I decided to see what they were proposing on their site. Luckily, I found a technique program that was an ultrasound technique. That's good because almost everyone in my family works in the health field and the program seemed interesting. Also, that's what I wanted in high school. I applied for the program because I loved it, but I was stressed out because they were only 40 places available. A few months later, I was accepted and I cried along with my mother. Everybody was really happy and proud of me, but I had to do a job interview and that was stressing me out.

Choice 1 : To do a job interview.

Choice 2 : Don't do the job interview.

Study for a vocational degree.

At first glance, a vocational degree may seem useful and there are some that they are but not all. For example, with a vocational degree you can be a hairdresser, a carpenter, a beautician and many other things but those types of career don't interest me. This type of study lasts only a few months to a year and a half, which is not much. Also, it's not the same diploma as a college diploma. Since I was little, I have never really been interested in this. I always had bigger ideas like becoming a teacher or a health technician. My purpose always has been to make my parents proud of me and even though I know that all the jobs of a vocational degree are respectable I know that my parents wouldn't have loved that for me. That's why I put aside that study option even though I could do internships to get experience.

Choice 1 : Do internships.

Choice 2 : Don't do an internship.

To do a job interview.

Often for big careers in health there is a lot of interviewing to do to see if you have what they need. In my opinion, these are the most stressful moments because you really need to prove yourself and that's difficult for me because I'm a shy person. I went to the interview and my only purpose was to pull off a good one, I wanted to have a feeling of fulfillment. A mindset like this come in handy in situation like this because when I entered the room, I had an appearance that gave confidence. Fortunately, everything went well, and I was very proud of myself because I was going on the right path.

Choice 1 :

Don't do the job interview.

I decided not to do the job interview because I was to shy. I wasn't proud of myself because I couldn't face my shyness. Also, to refuse the interview doesn't help me to make contacts and get a foot in the door. My uncle was not proud of me, he was screaming at me and didn't understand my reason to not go and do it. I cried all alone in my room, it wasn't a beautiful day for me.

Choice 1 :

To do an internship.

I think having experience in all kinds of different professions is very helpful. It's for this reason that I decided to do an internship in hairdressing. Even if I'm not interested in that, I know that it can help me to do the hair of my friends later on for important events or even for me. During my internship, I realized that there was a lot of gossiping between the more experienced hairdressers. They were talking trash about the less experienced hairdressers even if an intern like me was there in front of them. That's something I didn't like and that I found unprofessional, but at the same time it helped me to know what to expect in the work center.

Choice 1 :

Don't do an internship.

I decided to not volunteer for an internship. I found it useless to learn the ropes of a job that I don't like and on top of that without an income. I would not be able to get experience in different things in life, but at least I won't be losing time doing something that won't bring me anything later in my life. Also, I already work in a girly environment and I know that in those types of environments there's a lot of negative chats going on about other girls. I don't need that kind of negativity in my life right now. I prefer to not learn as much and to be happier than the opposite.
