A Lawyer's worst day.

Today is a big day. The trial we've all been waiting for finally arrived. This is one of the biggest trials of our firm, if it's not the biggest. In addition to that, I'm the lead lawyer of the trial. As I'm waking up, I realize that my alarm didn't ring and that I'm 30 minutes late. I rush to the bathroom in a panic. Last night, I planned on fixing my hair and makeup for the day in order to look presentable in front of the most important judge of our firm. It's currently 7:15 A.m. I have to be at work in 45 minutes and I haven't chosen my outfit yet. Why haven't I prepared my outfit last night? 15 minutes later, I finally decided on wearing a fancy little suit. I still have 30 minutes. It's a good thing that I live 5 minutes away from work. As I look at myself in the mirror, I feel my anxiety rising. I look horrible! My hair, my face, my eyebrows... I should start by doing my hair because it's what takes the most time. I wasted 5 minutes of my time trying to remember where I put my curling iron. 25 minutes to go. After burning myself several times, I'm finally done with my hair. I did my makeup in 10 minutes hoping people won't realize. Where are my car keys? This can't be happening. Never mind, I found them. They were right in front of me. I really have to start focusing and stop stressing. I grab my coat, my legal documents and head towards my car. 7 minutes left, right on time. As I drive, I hear people screaming and begging for help. I try my best to avoid eye contact but I can't help looking. You won't believe it. I thought it was a small car accident until I notice a little girl stuck in an upside down car. Her mom is crying and begging for help but no one seems to be stopping. I can't let the little girl bleed to death. I have to make a choice.

Choice 1 : Stop and help them.

I made my choice. I parked on the side of the road and I directly went to see the little girl's mother. Her name is Julie. I start by asking her to take me through all the details. She starts explaining the situation but I immediately stop her. I couldn't understand a word she was saying due to the fact that she's crying. I told her to take a deep breath and to start again when she's ready. I decide to take this time to call the paramedics. They told me not to touch the little girl because it could paralyze her. They will be there in 5 minutes. Julie isn't feeling well, but she still managed to catch her breath. She took me through all the details and I told her that everything is going to be okay. I walk towards the little girl and start talking to her in order to keep her conscious. She's very receptive but is in total pain. She's bleeding. I don't think she can it anymore. It's been 20 minutes since the paramedics told me that they would be here. The mom starts panicking again and I do my best to reassure her. However, I can't leave her much longer stuck in the car because she's starting to lose a lot of blood. 35 minutes later, and they still haven't shown up. Suddenly some random guy shows up and says that he's a doctor. He wants to help, and he asks if he can move the little girl's arm because she's at a high risk of having to amputate it. The paramedics aren't here, and he's the only guy who can help the little girl. Should I trust him?

Ignore them and arrive on time to work.

On my way to work, I feel guilt. I can't believe I just let this happen. A little girl's life is in danger and I can't seem to get over the fact that my job is more important. However, not showing up to this trial would create a big mess in my career. I'm 1 minute away from work, and despite my rush, I'm not late. I park my car and can't stop thinking about the situation. Is my trial really more important than a little girl's life? I have to make a choice.

Choice 1 : Head back to the crime scene and hope to get in time for the trial.

Choice 2 : Forget the situation and attend my trial.

I trusted the doctor.

I don't have much of a choice. The doctor had a medical kit in his car and is our only option for the moment. He starts talking to the girl, but she's barely responding. We have to do something as soon as possible. The doctor asks me to help him by holding the girl's head still. He barely touches her arm and she starts screaming. It hurts but we have no choice. After tons of screaming and shouting, the doctor manages to place her arm in a better position. However, she stopped crying, but she's still in pain. Her mom, on the other side, can't stop crying. It's her only child, and she can't imagine loosing her. People are stopping next to the car and start looking at the scene as if they were in a move theater. Instead of helping, they just watch and stare. What should I do about it?

I didn't trust the doctor.

The doctor doesn't seem like he knows what he's talking about. I couldn't put the life of a young girl in his arms. I told him that he can assist the girl without touching her. It's been 50 minutes since I called the paramedics, but still no sign of them. What should I do?

Choice 2 : Bring her myself to the hospital.

I turned around and headed straight to the scene. I finally arrived after this big dilemma and the mother seems so thrilled to see me. She's begging me for help. I don't know what to do. I start looking for help but no one seems to care. At the end of the street, I see a big yellow truck. Paramedics! I run towards it while hoping to find paramedics. They're here! I explain to them the situation, and they follow me really quickly. The paramedics did everything to take her out of the car without causing any more damages than there already is. They finally took her out and take her as quick as possible to the nearest hospital. I have to make a choice.

Choice 1 : Follow them to the hospital.

Choice 2 : Head back to the firm.

Forget the situation and attend my trial.

I stopped thinking about the little girl and focused on my trial. Its starts in 30 minutes. I went to prepare myself and meet my client. My life is currently a mess but I have to stop thinking about it in order to win this trial. I can't seem to hold in my emotions. My client realized that I was stressed. He started stressing because his life depended on me. I have to make a choice.

Choice 1 : Hand the case to another lawyer.

Choice 2 : Keep the case and do my best to win.

Tell the people that they're not in a movie theater.

I made a speech. "Where do you guys think you are? Imagine if this was your child. Would you stand there staring or would you help? If you're here to be useless, I will ask you to leave. I you would like to help, stay and make yourself useful." People started joining in by bringing moral support. What next?

Choice 2 : Tell them that there are too many people.

I decided to not give them my attention because it would take too much of my time. I had to help the little girl.

I called them. They told me that there was a huge problem with their system, and they sent paramedics on the way. At this moment, I can't do much. I am not useful anymore. Once the paramedics get here, everything will go as planned. What should I do?

Bring her myself to the hospital.

I asked some people to help me take the little girl out of the car because I knew that if she stayed in the car any longer, she would die. It required a lot of effort, patience and strength, but with the help of everyone, we managed to do it. I am currently on my way to the hospital.

I told Julie to get in my car. We drove to the hospital. As soon as we arrived, we saw the little girl on a medical bed with surgeons rushing her into the operation room.

I helped them enough and decided to finally head back to the firm. I got myself together and headed to my office. I prepared everything, met with my client and went to the court room. I am ready.

I handed the case to another lawyer in whom I trust because I really wasn't feeling well. I explained to him every detail of the trial and everything he needed to know. I wished him luck and headed back home.

Keeping the case was the best decision I have ever made throughout my career. During the whole trial, no one suspected me that I wasn't feeling well. I had prepared myself for this trial my whole career. Everything went as planned and I won! No one was surprised because they all expected me to win. Everyone was happy and my friend even proposed to celebrate my victory later tonight. For a quick second, I had forgotten about Julie and her daughter. It was now too late to do anything about it, but I still managed to find in which hospital she was. What should I do?

I decided to go see Julie and her daughter in the hospital. I told Julie the reason why I couldn't stay and help. She totally understood. She even told me that she would have felt guilty if I stayed and helped. She really enjoyed my visit, and she was really happy for my victory. Everything went good and the little girl is currently in recovery. I won't be able to see her until next week. Julie told me to enjoy the rest of my night and to go celebrate.
