My Career in Psychology.

It all started like this.

After graduating from college, I had to make a choice. I didn't know if I was motivated enough to apply in a program to become a psychologist or if I wanted to become a social worker with an easier path.

Choice 1 : Choose to become a psychologist.

Choice 2 : Choose to become a social worker.

Choose to become a psychologist.

To become a psychologist, I have to get a master's degree or a doctorate. Then, I have to pass an exam in order to get a license. It will take a lot of time and I will have to prioritize my studies. I will not have a lot of time to spend with my friends and family. My cousin that is studying to become a psychologist often stays at home when we go to movies because she can't allow herself to skip some study time.

Choice 1 : Study at home.

Choice 2 : Go out with friends.

Choose to become a social worker.

To become a social worker, I have to study four years to earn a bachelor's degree and two years to get a master's degree. I have to be concentrated for 6 years in order to start my job. But social workers earn less than psychologists. Social workers are focused on human services. They give solutions to people who have financial, health, social or other problems.

Choice 1 : Study at home.

Choice 2 : Go out with friends.

Go out with friends.

My group of friends invited me to go to a party. I was completing my assignments but seeing them get ready took away my motivation. I took my phone, and I was already seeing some Snapchat stories of the party. I didn't know if I should stay at home or go to have fun with everyone else. I told myself that the party will only happened one, so I shouldn't miss it. I closed my books and got ready to go with them.

Choice 1 : Taking drugs from strangers.

Choice 2 : Partying and go home.

Study at home.

I have been reading and writing for two weeks without taking a break. I didn't even go outside to take some air. I know that this is the right thing to do because I need good grades. Also, I see my friends struggling because they spend more time outside than at home to study. I prefer staying at home to get good grades instead of failing because I want to have fun. So, I decided to isolate myself until the end of the semester.

Choice 1 : Not taking any break from school.

Choice 2 : Manage my studying time.

Taking drugs from strangers.

Once I arrived at the party, everyone was doing their own thing. They were playing, eating, drinking, dancing, and doing many other fun activities. I was amazed because I was in a joyful environment. It felt wonderful, I finally felt free. While I was walking around, a handsome guy bumped into me and asked my name. We started talking and ended up in the garden that was practically empty. I was enjoying my time with my new friend until he offered me some candies. He gave a bunch of strawberry candies, they tasted normal, so I ate them. Then, I started to feel dizzy, so he asked me if I wanted to go in a room.

Choice 1 : Go in a room with a stranger.

Choice 2 : Try to reach out my friends.

Not taking any break from school.

While my friends were partying, I pursued my studies. I was feeling more tired than usually, and I couldn't concentrate. Suddenly, I had shortness of breath, and I was feeling very hot. My heart was racing, and I couldn't understand what was happening. I got up to take some air, and it helped but my heart was still racing all night. In the morning, I felt nauseous, so I couldn't eat anything. It became a habit. My grades got lower, I lost a lot of weight, and I always felt discouraged.

Choice 1 : Get some help.

Choice 2 : Continue with the same routine.

Partying and go home.

Once I arrived at the party, everyone was doing their own thing. They were playing, eating, drinking, dancing, and doing many other fun activities. I was amazed because I was in a joyful environment. It felt wonderful, I finally felt free. I saw my friends playing cards, so I joined them. Then, we participated in a dance battle, and obviously we won. We ended up the night we some cake, and returned to my house for a sleep over. I was happy because I took some air, and it gave me some energy.

Manage my studying time.

Since I decided to stay home and pursue my work, I decided that I had to make a schedule to manage my time. I knew it wasn't healthy to always study without taking any breaks. My friend actually got anxiety because of that, and she dropped her semester. It took her a year to get back to normal. Her eating habits, sleeping schedule, and her energy changed a lot. Because of that, I scheduled some breaks between my work, and I also set some free days. This helped me to keep up with school, and my social life in a healthy way.

Go in a room with a stranger.

I decided to go in a room with the guy that I just met because I was feeling dizzy. I was not able to think straight, so I thought he was trying to help me. When we entered the room, he locked the door. At that moment, I started to feel scared because I didn't understand what was happening to me. He told me to take off my jacket, and then he started to come closer. I started to panic and told him to stay away, but instead he forced himself on me. I tried calling for help but the music was too loud. I told him that I would call the police because he was harassing me, but he didn't look scared. He kept on getting more aggressive, and I was frightened. Then, I took a lamp and hit his head. He couldn't see anything for a moment to I used that opportunity to runaway.

Choice 1 : Go to a therapist.

Choice 2 : Be quiet.

Try to reach out my friends.

Since I didn't know the guy, I took my phone and messaged my friends to join me in the garden. They came right away, and asked me what was happening. I told them that I ate some candies that my new friend gave me, and then I started to feel dizzy. They guessed that those were cannabis infused candies, so they took me away from him. They brought me to the bathroom to splash some water on my face, and I felt way better. My friends warned me not to take something from strangers because we don't know what could be inside of it. That day, I learned a lesson, and never took something to eat from a stranger ever again.

Go to a therapist.

When I tried to sleep, some images from the party kept on coming in my head. I kept on seeing that guy that was forcing himself on me. Every night, I would wake up crying because I was traumatized. I was not able to talk about what happened to my parents because as the victim, it is very difficult. I did some research, and decided to contact a therapist to get some help. I met her every week, and step by step, I started to get more open. I felt comfortable telling her the incident. She was a great listener, and she gave some amazing advice. She made me believe that I am strong, and I am able to get through it. Now, I am able to sleep peacefully thanks to the psychologist.

Be quiet.

The incident that happened at the party was haunting me. I was so ashamed that a guy touched me without my consent, so I didn't want anyone to know about it. Day by day, it got worse. My mind couldn't focus on anything because I felt so weak. I was scared to get judged if I told someone. My health was getting critical, and no one understood what was happening. I did a lot of health tests, but they all came out negative because I knew stress was causing it all. The situation was so bad because everyone was stressed out with me. This led me to depression.

Get some help.

My health was getting so bad, so I had no choice but to contact a specialist. I scheduled some meetings with a psychologist. I explained to her the whole situation. She took notes, and told me to take it easy with school. She explained to me that I can get good grades even if I go out sometime. It's important for me to change my ideas. Plus, she asked me to ask a doctor if I could get some pills to get hungry more often. She told me to write down a list of stuff that I could do to gain some energy. Also, I decided to start working out at the gym. It would be a great excuse for me to take some air, and do some exercise.

Continue with the same routine.

I thought that this situation will get better, so I decided not to do anything. I continued studying every day, even if I was getting sick. My grades were still not as good as before. I started to cry every morning because I felt horrible but I thought that it was normal. The semester ended, and I failed 3 classes. I regretted my decisions, and now I know that I have to change my routine.

I made my choice.

All of this started with me being confused of my career choice. At the end of each story, I realized that seeing a psychologist was the right thing to do. This inspired me to become a psychologist instead of a social worker. Now, I am more interested to help people find their problem's source, and suggesting some solutions.
