I am a full-time student at Montmorency College. I have been studying Sciences for three semesters. After graduating from college, my intention is to obtain a professional doctorate in Pharmacy. This year, I have to decide which university I want to go to.

Choice 1 : The University of Montreal.

Choice 2 : The University of Laval.

I am thrilled that I have chosen to study at the University of Montreal. I was determined to make straight A’s in all of my courses. I read my books with a thoughtful concentration. If I had kept my cursory approach to my homework and my maddening habits of skipping breakfast, I would never have pulled off at my final exams. My time management helped me not to procrastinate. After four years of thorough work, I finally obtained a professional doctorate in Pharmacy. I wonder what I can do after my studies.

Choice 1 : Work for a Local Pharmacy in Montreal.

Choice 2 : Start my own pharmacy.

I am happy that I have chosen to study at the University of Laval. Though I live far from my friends and my family, I love the professors here and I made new friends. After four years of thorough work, I finally obtained a professional doctorate in Pharmacy. I knew that I only had to make efforts and sacrifices to pull off all of my courses. In order to achieve this, I had to put aside my cell phone and every other distraction. I wonder what I can do after my studies.

I am starting my first day as a pharmacist in charge. I am very excited. I have been a trainee for four years during my studies. It gave me the opportunity to learn the ins-and-outs of this profession and to learn practical skills while earning a wage. The practical knowledge that I have gained over the past four years reduces my stress on my first day. I enter the pharmacy with a big smile on my face while finishing my coffee. Five minutes later, a doctor calls while I am heading to the restroom. I hesitate a fraction of seconds before making a choice.

Start My Own Pharmacy.

I am now earning a wage that allows me to have financial flexibility. All of my efforts are starting to pay off. My talented colleague and I are starting our own pharmacy. Many steps must be taken before our common dream comes true. First of all, we have to decide the location of our pharmacy.

Work in a Hospital as a Pharmacist.

Before becoming a pharmacist, I was working in a dead-end job. Now, I am working in a hospital as a pharmacist. I am feeling a sense of contentment and fulfillment in this profession. In secondary five, I volunteered abroad. I travelled to Guatemala to help people in need. This invaluable opportunity and life experience helped me receive a premium wage in this job. With the experience I have gained, my boss is offering me to work with an intern to help him/her learn the basics of this profession.

Become a Teacher in the Pharmacy Program at the University of Laval.

It is a great pleasure to teach future pharmacists. After the class, a student tells me that she is a victim of sexual harassment since the beginning of the semester by another student. I immediately think about the negative effects of sexual harassment on the recipient. She then describes to me the feeling of dread she is experiencing. She also experiences fatigue, humiliation and difficulty of concentration. I am thinking very fast while she is telling me all of this. I am wondering what can be done to protect this young woman and discipline the perpetrator. Finally, I decide to help her the best I can.

Go to the Restroom First.

I believe the doctor can wait for a few minutes on the line. I will not be gone for too long. Also, my assistant says that it is not an urgent call. I did well to take the time to go to the restroom. A few minutes later, I am returning to the pharmacy section. When I pick the phone up, the doctor starts yelling at me. He is furious at me because I made him wait. I take a deep breath before answering him. More often than not, I get this type of reaction from the doctors when I make them wait.

Answer to the Doctor’s Call First.

It is the drive of work that pushes me to answer the doctor’s call. More often than not, it is an urgent call. The doctor has priority over almost everything. When I want to go to the restroom and a doctor calls at the same time, I have an obligation to answer the phone. This leads to a drawback because I have to put aside for at least thirty minutes my personal need.

A had to take a leave of absence because I am terribly sick. I have not been working for over six months now. For that reason, my colleague and I have put our big project on hold while I recover. The compensation package is not enough to pay my mortgage. Fortunately, I have set aside money in case of an emergency. My doctor said that I will recover soon. This good news reduces my financial stress, because I would be able to work again very soon.

I am grateful to have the opportunity to show to a student the basics of my profession. When he arrived, I explained to him the role of HR (the Human Resources Department). I believe it is essential to know the main function of the Human Resources Department. This department recruits employees, facilitates employee relations and more. After his week with me, he is now certain that this profession is for him.

Refuse to Work With an Intern.

A few weeks ago, I came back from my leave of absence. I have just returned from my maternity leave. I did not accept to work with an intern because I prefer to keep that energy for my little girl. When my child will be older, I will probably accept to work with an intern if the opportunity comes back.

I went with the young women to university resources. When we arrived, the man there gave the woman all the information she needed and an appointment to give her the psychological support she needs. I was glad that I came in handy.

I listen to her with attention and comprehension. I encourage her to tell her family or someone she trusts. I also told her about the university resources and how they can be an invaluable help to her in this situation. I also tell her that she can talk to me after class if the situation does not improve.

I am yelling back at him that I was in the restroom. I also tell him how impatient he was. His lack of comprehension is absolutely maddening. My assistant is looking at me with surprise. I realize that I am overreacting. I take a deep breath before calming myself.

I explained to him with a calm voice that I was at the restroom for a few minutes, and I am sure he can understand. He tells me he does understand and starts to explain to me some specification about the client’s medication.

I hang up the phone after telling the doctor to call me back when he calms down. I may do some overtime because of that but it is not a problem for me right now.

I calm myself and tell the doctor that we should be talking about the client’s medication. I tell him that this yelling hinders the rest of our work. He agrees with me and calms himself too.
