The journey begins.

After finishing your third year in Architectural Technology at Montmorency College, many options are there for you for the taking. You have made many friends who will all continue on the same different paths as you. One of your friends, who is very good at English, will go to Carleton University, in Ontario, to study in the 3-year Master of Architecture degree program. Another one of your friends has decided to go to Université de Montréal also to study the Master of Architecture degree program, but in French because he doesn't feel as comfortable in English. A third friend, who has liked the Architectural Technology program so much and got to know so much on a trainee ship he did at an Architecture Firm in his third year, has decided to go and apply for a permanent job at this same firm, As he already had a foot in the door at that firm.

Choice 1 : Get a Master of Architecture degree at Carleton University

Choice 2 : Get a Master of Architecture degree at Université de Montréal

Choice 3 : Apply to work at the same firm as your friend as he told you they are hiring.

Get a Master of Architecture degree at Carleton University.

As Carleton is in Ontario, you will have to find a new shelter where you will be able to live for the duration of your degree. Your friend who is also going to Carleton, offers you to jump in with him and his girlfriend to pay the rent on an apartment they already have purchased.

Choice 1 : Move in with your friend and your friend's girlfriend in their apartment.

Choice 2 : Decline your friend's offer and try to get an apartment by yourself.

Get a Master of Architecture degree at Université de Montréal.

Now that you have decided to go to the University in Montreal, you have the opportunity to do one of two things. Because you live near Montreal, you could stay and live at your parent's house free of rent. The downfall of this option would be that you would have an hour and a half of traffic everyday. the other option would be to rent an appartment near the Université de Montréal. The inconvinient of that option is that the rent is 300$ per month.

Choice 1 : Stay at your parent's house for the duration of your degree.

Choice 2 : Rent an appartment near the University.

Apply to work at the same firm as your friend as he told you they are hiring.

Done! Hired! Your new boss was so impressed by your grades and your resume that he decided to hire you on the spot. Obviously, knowing the ins and out of the job really did came in handy to start your new job on the right foot. Realizing how affective your are at what you do, your boss asks you if you would like to be working on two cases at the same time. This would mean a slightly bigger bonus at the end of the month, but would also meane even less time for your personal activities.

Choice 1 : Accept the offer and take on more work.

Choice 2 : Decline the offer as you already are doing enough.

After a while of living with your friend and his girlfriend, you realise that it was a great idea. Because the rent costs less than it would if you were alone, you don't have to do as many hours at your job. You also have more time to work on your school projects and studies. This really does make the perfect mix of work, friendship and school. Because of this effectiveness, you finish your degree with an honorable mention and you have at least ten architecture firms that want you to be a part of their team. Having taken a closer look at them, you have narrowed it down to two firms that interest you. A bigger one and a smaller one. Taking the job at the bigger firm would mean a less important contribution to the team, but more insteresting and diverse projects. Taking the job at the smaller firm would mean taking on smaller residential projects but with a way greater contribution to the team.

What seemed like a good idea has now turned into a terrible one. Not only do you have less time for yourself, but the quality of your work has also declined. Your boss is not happy with what you are doing for the firm and decides to fire you.

Your boss understands your point of view and give the work to another member of the firm who has the time to complete it. Continuing on your quality work, your boss gives you a promotion at the end of the year. Your career can only be successfull from there.

You learn so much and take on so many wonderfull project at this firm. You are able to manage a family, a house, a successfull worklife and friendship.

You might not be learning as much as you would have at a bigger firm, but the work you are doing seems way more important and your contribution becomes so important that you are offered a job as assistant manager of the firm.
