It's almost graduation, and I have to make a choice regarding my future career. My uncle is an accountant and I've always been interested in this job and I have an ease for numbers. Studying in this field would be a safe choice. On the other side, I've been playing hockey since I was six years old and it has always been my passion, and I dreamed of playing in the NHL for a long time. I can either pursue my dream of playing hockey or I can go to cegep to guarantee my career.

For the next few months, I wake up every day at 5 a.m. to go train. I give everything I have and make a lot of sacrifices to reach my goal. I practice every day, and when the tryouts finally arrive, I play with confidence. Unfortunately, I'm not chosen by the committee to go play for Laval's Rockets, the last step before playing for the Montreal's Canadians. I have no other choice than to go back to school.

Since I have always been interested in accounting, I want to pursue a career in this field. I now have two choices. I can either go in Natural Sciences for two years and then apply at HEC Montreal, or I can go in Accounting and management for three years and wouldn't need to go to university to get a job. In High School, I didn't always get straight A's, so maybe it would be easier to do three years of cegep and then be done with school. On the other end, going to HEC Montreal would probably get me a better income in the future.

I chose to do two years of cegep in nature sciences and then apply at HEC Montreal. I worked thoroughly for the last two years, and now is the time to open my admittance letter. I can't believe it, but I didn't get in. I don't want to be stuck in a dead-end job where I get paid minimal wage, so the best I can do is go back to cegep and study Accounting and management.

I'm back in cegep for the third year in a row, but at least all the basic classes are done and I can focus on the classes that really matters to me like computer science, management, and statistics. During the lunchtime at the cafeteria, one of my friend talks to me about a vacant position in his accounting firm. He explains to me that someone had to quit, and they now need someone new for this internship position. I'm thrilled to hear about this job opportunity, but I am scared at the same time. Taking this job would mean I would have less time to study, but it would also come in handy in the future because I would acquire experience.

It's my first day in the firm where I am doing my internship and I couldn't be more excited. It takes a lot of time management to have a well-balanced work and school life, but I am doing pretty good so far. Unfortunately, at the same time that my midterms arrive, my boss asks me to start doing overtime at the firm. I now have too much on my plate and my grades are starting to go down at school. Even if I really enjoy being an intern at this firm, my grades are more important and I have no other choice but to focus more on my studies.

Ever since I stopped my internship, my grades got better. I now have straight A's in almost all of my classes. There's less than a month left of cegep, and I have to make a choice. I can either directly start work for an accounting firm, or I can try to get into HEC Montreal again.

After the cegep, I get into an accounting firm. I work there from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and more often than not, I don't even do accounting related work. I mostly do an intern's job, which barely involves working on actual accounting. I often even go do coffee runs for all of the employees. I can no longer put up with this, so I decide to go talk to the HR representative. She tells me that if I want to start doing more accounting work, I would have to go to university to get a degree. I have no other choice since I don't want to serve coffee for the rest of my life.

Because of my good grades in cegep, I now get in HEC Montreal. At the beginning, it's harder than I thought, but after one trimester, I get the hang of it and it gets easier. I make a lot of new friends and meet a lot of people who work in accounting. By being more and more in touch with the accounting environment, it makes me realize that I chose a good field that has a lot of job offers that interest me. A few years later, I graduate from HEC Montreal and start working in a well-known accounting firm in Montreal. I couldn't be happier with my job, and I am lucky to work in a field that captivates me so much.

Just because I didn't get into Laval's Rockets the first time doesn't mean I won't get in the second time. I decide to work twice as hard as I worked before, so I won't miss my chance to be in the NHL. While training, I accidentally pull one of my muscle and I have to go to the hospital. The doctor says I can no longer play hockey.

I'm so frustrated that I didn't get into HEC Montreal that I don't even want to go back to school. I decide to work at Mcdonald's but since I have no experience, my manager puts me on the night shift. This job is very boring. I do the same task over and over again during eight hours, while drunk people come and go. I start to become depress because I never see the sun, nor my friends. One night, while talking to my uncle on the phone, he makes me realize that if I want to be happy, I need a job that motivates me. To get that job, I need to go back to school.

Even if my grades get down, I continue to give everything I have to be able to maintain good grades. Eventually, I fail all of my classes and I now have to comply with an agreement with the school. I have to pass more than half of my classes or I will get expelled. I start to work even harder, but I don't have enough time to study and I fail all of my classes. The school expels me, and when the firm learns that I got expelled, they fire me. I now have no job, no degree and no money. I start to sell drugs to be able to afford an apartment, but the police arrests me, and they put me in jail.
