Hypertext narrative about my fate as Social Worker.

Section 1.

After 3 years at Montreal University, l am now a bachelor in Social Work. Since I graduated, I applied in a lot of places with vacant positions in a couple of Child and youth protection centers, in some colleges and Health and social services institutions. After some interviews, two places called to announce me that I got the job. These two jobs are as a parole officer at Saint-Jérôme correctional center and as a teacher at Saint-Jérôme College.

Choice 1 : Work as a parole officer at Saint-Jérôme correctional center

Choice 2 : Work as a teacher at Saint-Jérôme College

Section 2.

I accepted to work as a parole officer at the correctional center of Saint-Jérôme. On my first day, I got an on-the-job-training, that allowed me to analyse the environment and the prisoners I'm going to attend on their conditional release. At the end of the day, my immediate superior asked me if I wanted to work with sexual assault or drug dealer cases.

Choice 1 : Sexual assault cases

Choice 2 : Drug dealer cases

Section 3.

I accepted to work as a teacher at Saint-Jérôme College. Before the beginning of the fall semester, each teacher got to choose which class they want to teach, so that's what my colleagues and I did on my first day. I've got two choices. The first one is research-action, I don't really like this course but I'm excellent in research and to analyse different problematic situations. The second choice is crisis and stress management, when I did this course it was my favorite one and I like to be in the action, it could be a good challenge for me to teach this class. I need to make a thoughtful choice.

Choice 1 : Teach the research-action course

Choice 2 : Teach the crisis and stress management course

Section 4.

I decided to work with sexual assault cases. As a parole officer, I assess with the prisoners about the possibility of their rehabilitation and their reintegration into the society. One of the prisoners was flirting with me since our first meeting. It wasn't that bad, so I ignored it, but now it's becoming more like sexual harassment, the prisoner keeps making more and more inappropriate comments and I'm not feeling secure anymore. I don't know how to react about it, I hesitate to denounce it or to keep the situation like this and try to make him stop by myself with my knowledge in intervention.

Choice 1 : I denounce the prisoner

Choice 2 : I do nothing and I continue my meeting with the prisoner

Section 5.

I decided to work with drug dealer cases. The day after I confirmed my new position, I learned that one of my colleagues was mad because we wanted to work with drug dealers, and he had more experience than me with this clientele. For me, to work with sexual assault cases or drug dealers cases don't matter, I chose drug dealer cases because I thought that it would be easier for me, but if my colleague really want my position I can change mine.

Choice 1 : Continue in my new position

Choice 2 : Give the cases to my colleague and work with sexual assault cases

Section 6.

I chose to teach the research-action course, it's not the best class but I'm feeling more secure to teach a course that I'm pretty good in it. Since I chose this class, I'm trying to figure it out how I can teach it. I don't know if I should do a simple lecture on theory or more like group discussions and little activities to facilitate the understanding of the student.

Choice 1 : Teach only the theory

Choice 2 : Teach with group discussions and little activities

Section 7.

I decided to teach the crisis and stress management course for the fall semester. It's been already 4 weeks that the semester has started and I knew since the beginning it's going to be difficult, but now I'm feeling overwhelmed by the drive of work. I know that I should ask for help but I don't want to look like the new teacher who's not able to do her job, I really don't know what to do...

Choice 1 : Ask a colleague for help.

Choice 2 : Continue to teach my course without asking for help

Section 8.

I talked to my superior about the behaviour of the prisoner, and he sent a police officer to warn him that if he doesn't stop his misconduct he will not have his conditional release. When I arrived at the meeting after the warning, I don't know how it happened it was really fast, but the prisoner hit me, and he raped me.

Choice 1 : Start again

Section 9.

I continued to ignore his inappropriate behaviors and to stay focused on his evaluation. It was difficult for me to deal with his comments because I've been raped by my uncle when I was young. Even after different interventions, the situation was getting worse with the time and it became too much to handle. So, unfortunately, I resigned my job to take care of ma mental health.

Section 10.

I decided to keep my position, I told myself that I want to get comfortable in my new environment before challenging myself. So, I started to meet the prisoner and everything was fine. But, when I met the prisoner after lunch break, I brought my glass of water and I forgot his file in my office, so I went to get it. During the time I was gone, the prisoner put a pill in my water. When I came back in the meeting room, everything seemed alright, but I was thirsty.

Choice 1 : I drink my glass of water during the meeting

Choice 2 : I drink my glass of water after the meeting

Section 11.

I told my superior that I changed my mind and I prefer to work with the perpetrator of sexual assault. Anyway, I like to be challenged and it's just going to be a bigger challenge. My colleague was very happy and thankful when I announced him that he can work with the drug dealers.

Choice 1 : Start again

Section 12.

So, I began the semester and I decided to give my class with only a simple lecture of the theory. I noticed from the beginning that students were very demotivated. When we arrived at the fifth week of the semester, all the students dropped out my class, so I lost my job.

Choice 1 : Start again

Section 13.

Before the beginning of the semester, I organized a lot of activities and discussion topics to motivate my students. The classroom atmosphere is excellent and students love the concept of the course. For the final evaluation I had to decide if the students got to do a group discussion on a predetermined social work topic or a written research exam.

Choice 1 : Group discussion exam

Choice 2 : written exam

section 14.

After a long reflexion, I decided to ask a colleague for advice to have a better teaching technique. He told me that he wanted something in exchange for this advice. My colleague said he would help me only if I accept to cheat on my boyfriend with him. I do love my boyfriend, but we are living a distance relationship that is difficult for me because I am in need of attention. Besides, I can't deny that my colleague is very attractive, so it's tempting.

Choice 1 : Cheat on my boyfriend with my attractive colleague.

Choice 2 : Refuse his help and stay faithful to my boyfriend.

Section 15.

After a few weeks to continue to teach the crisis and stress management course by myself, my colleagues notified that I had a lot of difficulties with the content of the course and some students complained about the inconsistency and the lack of organization. To enable the students a good learning, the director decided to fire me.

Section 16.

I took a sip of my water and I continued my evaluation as planned. The more time went by the more I felt dizzy and distracted, I wasn't in control of myself. At a moment, I just fell out of my chair and I passed out. A colleague called an ambulance, I went to the hospital and when I got out of there, my boss told me that I have to take a forced leave of several weeks.

Choice 1 : Start again

Section 17.

I told myself that I'll change the water in my class after the meeting with the prisoner to be sure that's everything's alright. When I finished my weekly evaluation, I went back in my office, I forgot to change the water and I drank all the glass of water. The dosage of drug in the glass was very high so, I did an overdose and when someone spotted me lying on the floor it was too late, I was already dead.

Choice 1 : Start again

Section 18.

My students did a small group discussion for the exam. All of them passed the course and the average of the class was 87%. When the coordinator of the social work department saw this impressive result, she gave me a bonus because she has never seen a such good average before.

Choice 1 : Start again

Section 19.

I prepared a written exam for my student. When I finished correcting all the exams, I was disappointed by the grades, the class average dropped to 55%. Given these poor results, after investigation the college principal determined that I had improperly prepared the students for the final exam, so if this happens again in the next semester I'm going be dismissed.

Choice 1 : Start again

Section 20.

I accepted his offer because my career is very important for me and it could clear my mind of the routine. So, my colleague and I went out a couple of time, but my boyfriend started to have doubts about my loyalty. One day after a day at work, my colleague invited me to dinner, and when we were walking to the restaurant, my boyfriend saw me from his car when he was coming back from his job. When I came back from the date, my boyfriend left me and since then I started a depression.

Choice 1 : Start again

Section 21.

I refused his offer because even if my boyfriend and I are living a distance relationship, I love him too much to let a colleague ruined our relationship. After this discussion with my colleague, I decided to call the HR manager of the college to let him know about the situation. One week after I called, the coordinator of the Social Work technique came at my office in the Social Work department to tell me that my colleague is now fired, and she told me that if I need help it would be a pleasure for her to do overtime to check with me how I can improve my learning technique. Since then, I am relieved to know that despite my difficulties I can receive help and keep my job!
