Lauriane's Hypertext Narrative.

The big choice.

I have been studying social work for 1 year now at Cegep of Saint-Jérôme. I really like that and I can't wait to start working in this wonderful area. I have to start thinking about my future internships soon. I must decide in which environment I will want to complete this internship and with which social group I will want to intervene.

Choice 1 : The elders.

Choice 2 : Children and adolescents.

Choice 3 : Women.

Cegep of Saint-Jérôme

The elders.

Among the options available to me is the possibility of helping seniors. During my internship, I will do everything I can to give them a little sunshine in their day and I will try to help them have a better quality of life.

Choice 1 : Interesting.

Choice 2 : Not for me.

Children and adolescents.

The social groups that interest me the most is definitely that of children and adolescents. I would be so happy if I could work with this age group because I have always loved young people.

Choice 1 : My dream.

Choice 2 : My biggest disappointment.

Interesting.

Following my internship with the elders, I found that this group interests me much more than I thought. The elders are kind and adorable with me. They like me very much and it's totally reciprocal. I am happy to have tamed them and now I can say that I would like to work with them later.

Choice 1 : Work with them.

Choice 2 : Become a social worker for seniors.

Not for me.

Unfortunately, when I did my internship, I realized that I was not comfortable with seniors. I am not the right person to offer them everything they need. I think I will be better off with another group. It's not because I don't like them, but I don't necessarily see myself spending my life with this age group.

Choice 1 : Stress and loss of motivation.

Choice 2 : Keep hope and persevere.

My dream.

If I can do my internship with children as well as with adolescents, it would be one of my dreams that would come true. I will be the happiest. It is the social group that turns me on the most and my goal as a future worker is to get there.

Choice 1 : Youth center.

Choice 2 : Mental health.

My biggest disappointment.

Annoyingly, I think I will not be able to work with children and adolescents. I realize that I am much too empathetic and sensitive. Their stories make me sad and I find it difficult to help them. I feel helpless, and I am very unhappy with this situation. My dream group is now unthinkable for someone like me.

Choice 1 : Depression.

Choice 2 : Take time.

Work with them.

Since I loved my experience with the elders and I can't wait to join the job market, I decided to finish my social works technique and go directly to work. So, I will be a social work technician with seniors.

Choice 1 : The end.

Become a social worker for seniors.

Since my internship with the elders, I am excited to work with them. In addition, since the salary is much more advantageous by obtaining the baccalaureate, I plan to go to get my diploma to be a bachelor in social work. Also, if I wish, I can be part of the order of social workers in Quebec.

Choice 1 : The end.

Stress and loss of motivation.

Given my observation of working with seniors, I am more stressed than usual. It demotivates me to have to start my research over to find out which social group interests me. I don't really know where to go anymore and I find it a shame.

Choice 1 : The end.

Keep hope and persevere.

Following my disappointment, I decided to keep hoping. I don't want to be discouraged, so I continue to assess the other possibilities by keeping my head high and being attentive to the options available to me.

Choice 1 : The end.

Youth center.

I would like to do my internship or even work in a youth center. Difficult children and adolescents challenge me, and I am motivated to help them. It has always interested me to help these young people because they deserve to have a good life. Sometimes their parents don't help them, and they leave them to themselves. They don't supervise them, so I can be there for them.

Choice 1 : The end.

Mental health.

Mental health has always been of great interest to me. Since I decided to be a social worker, I have been thinking about this problem carefully. I wish to be able to help young people with mental illnesses, because above all they must not go through this difficult ordeal alone. I would love to do one of my internships with them.

Choice 1 : The end.

Depression.

After realizing that I was not made for this group, my morale is at zero. I am demolished. I feel weak and I feel like I have failed. I feel depressed and in my eyes, my career is ruined. My ultimate goal is now unattainable and it breaks my heart.

Choice 1 : The end.

Take time.

Following the discovery of my too great sensitivity, I feel sad, but I take a deep breath and I tell myself that I must take time for myself. I must not be discouraged so easily. I must carefully assess the possibilities that are achievable for me. I also have to see if other groups interest me or if another career turns me on.

Choice 1 : The end.

Women.

One of the groups that interest me a lot is that of women. I would love to help women to be good with themselves. It is important to help each other as women and that is why this calls me strongly. For my internship with women, I will have to choose a community organization.

Choice 1 : The Portal.

Choice 2 : Madeleine Inn.

The Portal.

The Portal is a therapy center for women with addiction.

Choice 1 : Happiness.

Choice 2 : Incompatible.

Madeleine Inn.

Madeleine Inn is a community organization that welcomes every woman in difficulty, whether for homelessness, mental health problems, violence, drug addiction or other form of addiction, immigration, etc.

Choice 1 : Good news.

Choice 2 : Bad news.

Happiness.

I am happy, because the values of this center are respect, dignity, responsibility, freedom, solidarity, integrity, sincerity, loyalty and above all, the coherence between what we are, what what we say and what we do. These really join mine and I feel accomplished to participate in these beautiful helping gestures.

Choice 1 : The end.

Incompatible.

Unfortunately, this organization is not the right one for me. I find that the services offered are not diverse enough. The clientele is too precise. So, I will have to continue my research in order to find the organization that will suit me perfectly.

Choice 1 : The end.

Good news.

To my great surprise, following my internship, this fabulous organization offered me a position for when I finished my studies. I could work at this beautiful place and I will be more than happy to accept their proposal.

Choice 1 : The end.

Bad news.

I am sad to learn that this organization refused my internship request. So, I won't be able to see if I like this place or not. Madeleine Inn has no availability and space to accommodate students. So, I should, once again, continue my research.

Choice 1 : The end.

The end.

Finally, whatever my training environment, life will decide what is best for me. I believe in destiny and if I am not made for a place or for a certain social group, it is good because it will have a reason.

Choice 1 : The big choice.
