My professional journey in the world of Fire Safety.

The beginning of a new era.

You've finally finished high school and can, at last, make your own decisions for your future! What have you planned?

Choice 1 : Look for a program that you feel could be worthwhile.

Choice 2 : Let's put aside studying for a little while...

Look for a program that you feel could be worthwhile.

Scrolling through the programs, one catches your eye. Fire Safety is just what you were looking for! Sure it looks like a lot of leg work, but if other peoples have done it, so can you! Are you up for the task?

Choice 1 : I want to become a firefighter.

Choice 2 : The admission process looks too complicated. I'd rather look for something else.

Let's put aside studying for a little while...

Your lack of ambition is totally justified, after all you're not even guaranteed to get a premium wage just because you have a college education. So, what now?

Choice 1 : I want to play Fortnite!

Choice 2 : I'm going to look for a vacant position at the supermarket near my house!

I want to become a firefighter.

After doing a physical exam, a psychological exam, an interview and a background check you finally received the letter saying that you have been accepted in the Fire Safety program! But you still have work to do because you start in a few months and you still have time to get a job to earn some money to support you during your studies.

Choice 1 : I would rather use these months to go volunteering at my local YMCA.

Choice 2 : I want to make some money!

The admission process looks too complicated. I'd rather look for something else.

Too many steps are required and you can't be bothered. Maybe, I can find another program?

Choice 1 : I'll just close my eyes and pick a random program.

Choice 2 : Nothing look's interesting, I think I'll choose another path.

I want to play Fortnite!

You log in and play this game until you can't keep your eyes open anymore and since your parents are on vacation, there is nobody to stop you! Suddenly, the sound of the smoke detector wakes you up, you forgot the pop tart in the oven cooking! You storm out of your room to find your kitchen engulfed in flames! If only you had minimal knowledge in fire fighting. All of sudden you remember there is a fire extinguisher in the wardrobe besides the entry!

Choice 1 : I'm not trying to be a hero, call 911 and run outside!

Choice 2 : How hard can it be to put out a fire? You go to get the fire extinguisher.

I'm going to look for a vacant position at the supermarket near my house!

Even if you end up in a dead-end job at least you'll be able to generate your own income and buy your own things! Who knows? Maybe you'll end up liking it!

Choice 1 : Become a cashier.

Choice 2 : Apply for branch director even if I'm in no way qualified for it.

I would rather use these months to go volunteering at my local YMCA.

You're welcomed with open arms and you spent the next few months having an impact in the lives of people who need help. One of your colleagues was so charmed by your humble self that you've fallen in love! You're now entering the Fire Safety program full of confidence. In fact, you show so much confidence that your class decided to name you as their captain. Sure the position looks overwhelming but you'll for sure make a great captain!

Choice 1 : I want to become the captain for my class.

Choice 2 : I don't want to become the captain for my class.

I want to make some money!

So, you've been working like a dog for the past few months, doing overtime as soon as you had the chance and you've set aside quite some money. You're now driving into the parking lot of the school with your new car! You don't even need to work for the rest of the school year but more money is never a bad thing right?

Choice 1 : I'd rather focus on my studies, so I can pull off straight A's.

Choice 2 : I will keep working, while I study at the same time.

I'll just close my eyes and pick a random program.

Your finger falls into a program that you can't even pronounce, even worse, you don't even know in what field of study it is! But you don't worry too much about it because how bad can it really be? Fast forward 6 months, you're struggling to keep your grades above the failure mark because you have a hard time understanding the concepts of the program and since you don't have any real interest in this field of study you barely even study. Maybe, it's not too late to change your mind? You decide to drop out and see what else you can do.

Choice 1 : Look for a program that you feel could be worthwhile.

Choice 2 : I'm going to look for a vacant position at the supermarket near my house!

Nothing look's interesting, I think I'll choose another path.

Clearly you weren't made to sit in a classroom for hours and hours, listening to somebody talking. You already know everything you need to know! What other options are there that don't require going to school?

Choice 1 : I want to become a Sound cloud rapper!

Choice 2 : I want to explore the world!

I'm not trying to be a hero, call 911 and run outside!

You grab your cellphone and run outside. Within minutes the fire trucks make it to the scene. Fortunately, your quick thinking allowed the firefighters to quickly put out the blaze causing minimal damage to the house. Nonetheless, your parents are probably going to be very mad at you. You can't stop thinking at how beautiful the dancing flames looked.

Choice 1 : Let the dancing flames consume you.

Choice 2 : Make the dancing flames my nemesis!

How hard can it be to put out a fire? You go to get the fire extinguisher.

You run to the wardrobe and come back with the fire extinguisher. You struggle to get it working because you never took the time to read the instructions. Once you manage to get it working you spray the thin powder all over the place until nothing comes out of the extinguisher, hoping the fire will die, little did you know that fire extinguishers had to be used in short bursts and be directed at the base of the flames and not at the top of the flames. Since you didn't use the fire extinguisher like it was meant to be used, the fire keeps growing and growing. Before you even realize it, you're surrounded by the fire and can't escape! Right when you're about to be burnt alive, you jump out of your chair. It was just a nightmare. Maybe, a sign?

Choice 1 : The beginning of a new era.

Become a cashier.

After a quick on-the-job-training, you become a full-time cashier at your local supermarket. You don't earn a lot of money but your job doesn't require you to think, just scan the products and smile. In the blink of an eye, you're in your early 40s and while all your high school friends have kids and their own house, you still live at your parents house because you don't earn enough money to move out. You feel miserable. One Friday afternoon, while walking back home after your shift, you walk past an antique store you've never seen before. In fact, you could swear yesterday this was a football field! You're so intrigued that you decide to enter the store. As soon as you have a foot in the door, you are surprised at how the store looks so much bigger from the inside. Walking through the aisles of old and weird looking artifacts, one catches your eye, it's a black ball on a stand that simply says, ''shake me''. You grab the ball and shake it. You look at the ball and notice that a sentence is written on it, ''Where the path first split, say take me and forget all of it.

Choice 1 : Say, ''Take me''.

Choice 2 : Put the ball back on the stand.

Apply for branch director even if I'm in no way qualified for it.

After modifying your CV so it looks credible, you get called for an interview. After studying a couple of YouTube videos on business management, you feel confident enough. You have no clue what you're saying but strangely enough the interview goes smoothly and since nobody asked for a proof of study or any references you didn't have to show any! A few days go by and all of a sudden you receive a call to tell you that you have been selected to become the branch director of the supermarket! You can't believe how you managed to pull off this scheme and right after the excitement of getting the job, you feel fear and uncertainty. What happens if your lies end up catching up to you?

Choice 1 : Take the position as branch director.

Choice 2 : Don't take the position as branch director.

I want to become the captain for my class.

You don't let the role and its responsibilities intimidate you, how bad can it be? The months go by and you barely manage to keep up with your studies, your leadership role, staying in shape and your relationship. You're now almost done with your first year in Fire Safety and in a month you'll get the chance to do an internship in a fire department. You want to study so you can look like a devoted intern but your partner is claiming, you're not spending enough time together and demands more attention.Unfortunately, you only have time for one or the other. How will you set up your time management?

Choice 1 : I will study.

Choice 2 : I will focus on my relationship.

I don't want to become the captain for my class.

You thank the class for the offer but you respectfully refuse by saying you already have a lot of responsibilities and you feel adding one more would overwhelm you. The months go by and you've really learnt so much about firefighting! From fire behavior to driving trucks and boats, CPR and even rappelling of a building! You're a month away from your internship and you are very excited! The only thing you have left to decide is what type of pastry you're going to bring to the team on your first day at the fire station.

Choice 1 : I will bring donuts.

Choice 2 : I'm not going to bring them anything.

I'd rather focus on my studies, so I can pull off straight A's.

You quit your job, so you could be the best student! The months go by and you have so much free time to study that your piers and the teachers see you as an exemplary student. You've really gained a very good reputation and since the firefighting world is so small, many fire departments must know your name by now. You're a month away from your internship and you've been assigned to the busiest fire station of Montreal's Fire Department! This will for sure be an amazing experience! All that's left to decide is what type of pastry you're going to bring on your first day!

Choice 1 : Bring them Mr. Puffs.

Choice 2 : Ask your mother to cook a cake.

I will keep working, while I study at the same time.

Surely you can work on weekends while you attend class during the rest of the week. The months go by and you just can't handle so much work. You're exhausted because you never have a day off and it is really affecting your grade at school. Your reputation proceeds you. You're seen as unreliable and undisciplined, you've had many disciplinary problems because your uniform is not as it should, you often forget to shave and fall asleep in every class. You're a month away from your internship when you're called to the principal's office. You enter the office and take a seat, the principal explains that given your lack of discipline, he is forced to cancel your internship until you prove that you are worthy of it. The principal's then explains that instead of going to a fire station, you'll stay at school and you're going to help the appropriators clean the fire trucks. You're devastated, you get home and your sadness transforms into anger, you're not thinking straight anymore and who knows what your next action will be!

Choice 1 : Give up and leave the program.

Choice 2 : I'm not going to give up!

I want to become a Sound cloud rapper!

You get into your soundtrack maker software, and you spend hours putting up together what can only be described as a fire soundtrack! You spend the rest of the week coming up with the lyrics for your song and your artist name. When you feel your master piece is ready you post it on your Sound cloud account and you share the link on your Instagram account. Within hours, your song receives 2 million views and 500 thousands likes! You're an instant hit! You soon receive a message from one of the biggest record companies in the world, and they want you to sign a record deal worth 5 million dollars with them! You can barely speak, but you manage to stutter a ''YES!''. The next day, you take the first flight for Miami to sign the contract. You spend the next seven-year becoming an international pop star and you've now turned your millions into billions meaning that you, nor your family need to work ever again! You get married to an equally famous partner and get to live a luxurious life-style for the rest of your life.

I want to explore the world!

You fill your backpack with as many clothes as you can and you break your piggy bank, so you can grab whatever money is inside and don't forget your passport! You sneak out the house and you start walking and walking, you don't know where you're going but you feel as free as never before! You spend the next three-year travelling, you've crossed the border to the United States and you've seen so many unforgettable landscapes. You never told your parents were you were going but you don't care because they wouldn't understand why you decided to leave. You end up in finding an abandoned cabin in the middle of the Superior National Forest in Minnesota, and you decide to once and for all settle there and live in the wilderness. You spend the rest of your life free and happy, living a simple life in the forest.

Let the dancing flames consume you.

Since you can't comeback inside the house, you have to spend the next few weeks at a hotel room while you wait for the house to be repaired. You can't stop thinking about the fire and it starts becoming an obsession. You soon start playing with matches and lighters and you feel like you can tame the flames, so you start lighting things on fire, trash cans, mailboxes, even trees! You feel like you're doing nothing wrong, you simply love to see how the fire consumes everything it touches. One day, while you're lighting a tree on fire, you realize that the tree is too close to an abandoned house and it will surely spread, but you can't control yourself and light the tree on fire anyway. The fire soon spreads to the house and becomes enormous. You're so focused on looking at the flames that you don't see the police officers walking up on you. You get arrested and charged with pyromania. The court finds you guilty and since you have a psychological disorder, you get sent to the asylum where you will spend the rest of your days.

Make the dancing flames my nemesis!

Since you can't comeback inside the house, you have to spend the next few weeks at a hotel room while you wait for the house to be repaired. You can't stop thinking about the flames and how they have ruined your life! This has now become your personal fight, you will do what you have to so that nobody has to go through what you went through! You will fight fires!

Choice 1 : I want to become a firefighter.

Say, ''Take me''.

You look around, to make sure nobody sees you, and you say, ''take me''. As soon as you finish the sentence, the ball blinds you with light and you can feel the strong wind that surrounds you like as if you were in the middle of a hurricane. When you manage to open your eyes again, you realize you're on the stage at your high school graduation ceremony. You don't remember what happened, but you know you weren't here before. You hear your name and walk up to receive your high school diploma, even though you're confused, you smile and walk down the stage. You have finally finished high school, what you choose to do is up to you now.

Choice 1 : The beginning of a new era.

Put the ball back on the stand.

You shrug and put the ball back where it was. What a silly game, you say to yourself. You proceed to leave the store and go home. The next day, you wake and while you're scrolling through Facebook, you see a post saying that somebody had won the record 100 million dollar jackpot and that person apparently lived in Quebec. Since you bought a lottery ticket, you decide to go to the lottery website to check out the winning combination, knowing very well that the odds of you winning are smaller than being struck by a lightning strike. Nonetheless, you pull out the wrinkled ticket out of your wallet and you look at the numbers. They match perfectly with the winning combination! You are a millionaire! You start jumping and screaming in your room. You don't have to work anymore and you can buy anything you ever wanted! You spend the rest of your days on an island in the Caribbeans with not a single worry.

Take the position as branch director.

You decide to take the position despite your lack of knowledge. You go to Walmart and buy the best tuxedo sixty dollars can buy. As the weeks go by, your poor business management starts pilling up and the financial situation of the supermarket becomes more and more desperate. Your colleagues seem to become suspicious of you and listen less and less of your suggestions. One morning as you're entering the supermarket, you're welcomed by one of your colleagues and two police officers that handcuff you. The other directors of the supermarket decided to do a background check of your professional career and found nothing of the accomplishments you claimed on your CV. The supermarket sues you for fraud. You're found guilty and have to payback the supermarket a total of 300 thousand dollars and spend the next twenty years in prison. You have ruined your life.

Don't take the position as branch director.

You decide that the risk is not worthy of the reward. You call back the supermarket and say that unfortunately, you will not be taking the job. You realize that even though you weren't qualified for the position, you clearly have the potential to do whatever you want! You decide that the best way to succeed is through studying. You decide that once and for all you will choose a program so you never have to lie about your knowledge ever again.

Choice 1 : Look for a program that you feel could be worthwhile.

I will study.

You decide that it's more important to study for your internship than give more attention to your partner. A week before the start of your internship, your partner breaks up with you. You're devastated, you come into the fire station feeling like crap. The firefighters notice your behavior and ask you what the problem is. After explaining your situation, they tell you it's part of the process of becoming a firefighter. They proceed to tell you that, since the work schedule is so varied, having a steady relationship as a firefighter is complicated. You feel better since you know that you're not the only one who had to go through this type of situation. Your internship goes smoothly and you've learnt many ins-and-outs of the job. Fast forward two years from, now you've finally finished the Fire Safety program and can apply for Montreal's Fire Department. After a year of hiring exams you're hired as a firefighter for Montreal's Fire Department! During one of your calls, you meet a pretty paramedic, you talk for a little bit and instantly click! You date the paramedic for a few years and decide to get married. You end up working as a firefighter for the next 30 years and enjoy a well-deserved retirement.

I will focus on my relationship.

On your first day as an intern, you walk into the fire station and greet your work team. They ask you a few questions about yourself and about your knowledge on fire safety. Since you didn't get the chance to study, you give them very vague answers, and you can see they're not satisfied. Nonetheless, they show you around the fire station and explain to you the ins-and-outs of the job. Your internship goes by fairly smoothly, but they do tell you you need to study more if you really want to become a firefighter. You spend the next two-year finishing your program and you apply as soon as you can in Montreal's Fire Department. Unfortunately, since you spent more time focusing on your relationship instead of your studies, you get refused by Montreal's Fire Department because you didn't pass their written exam. You manage to become a part-time firefighter for smaller town to the North of Montreal. Since the town only has part-time positions, you have to work a second job if you want to be able to support your family. You spend the rest of your carrier as a part-time firefighter and have two kids with your partner. You enjoy a nice retirement with a reasonable pension.

The firefighters look very pleased with your interest in the job and so, they help accommodate and are overall friendly. I'm not going to bring them anything.

As you enter the fire station empty-handed, you can see the disappointment on the faces of the members of your work team. They make a quick comment about the fact you showed up without any welcoming gift but you don't pay much attention to it. They show you around the fire station and leave you to do whatever you want. You feel as if you've not made a good first impression. Nonetheless, you put the right amount of effort and the firefighters soon see your true potential and start to appreciate you. Your internship is now over and you're ready to finish the Fire Safety program. Two years go by and you finally graduate! You apply for Laval's Fire Department and after a very hard and long hiring process you get accepted. You spend the next twenty-year working as a firefighter, you rise through the ranks and end up becoming a fire Marshall for Laval's Fire Department. One day, you're called for a structural fire on a 3 story high residential building. Upon arriving on the scene you meet with the other fire Marshall who's in charge of the operation. He asks you to gear up and climb to the roof of the building so you can give him a report. As you climb to the top of the building, you start being more and more out of breath, all of a sudden you feel a sharp pain on your chest that is so intense that you drop to your knees. You decide that you won't give up that easily! You spend the next month working as hard as you can to prove that you have what it takes to be a firefighter! The director finally agrees to let you have your internship, but since the scholar year is almost over you'll only be able to have a two-week-long internship instead of the usual, one month long internship. Nonetheless, you're still very excited to be able to have your internship! After your internship, you spend the next three-year finishing your program, and since your first year didn't go very well you had to retake some classes. After receiving your diploma, you apply to a couple of Fire Departments, and you manage to get hired by Longueuil's Agglomeration Fire Department.
