I am almost finished with my CEGEP education.

With this present health crisis (COVID-19), I must finish my Business Management studies at home (and not at the Ahuntsic College). However, my R scores does not count. Am I going to put effort into my studies?

I have been accepted to HEC Montreal. It's something to be proud of! However, because of a service interruption in the subway, I am late to my classes. Will I run or will I take it easy because teachers never give any subjects during the first course?

Oh ! No ! I spent too much time watching Netflix, instead of studying for my Linear Algebra and Geometry class, and my History class. I failed my semester and I have to start it over next fall. Will I pay more attention to my grades during my compensatory session?

Welcome to Hell.

I somewhat didn't fail my classes with all of the parties I threw with my friends. It's really impressive. But, what is less impressive is the fact that I was only accepted at UQAM in a Bachelor of Business Administration, like all of the students who didn't had the grades to go to HEC. It's going to be difficult to study with all of the strikes.

Instead of being 15 minutes late, I miss my class entirely. I should have looked at my shoelaces before running like an insane person. Now, I'm stuck in the nurse's office for the rest of the day.

Prudence is the key to success.

I missed the teacher introduction to the course, but luckily I didn't miss any school subject. Now, after this course (which lasted 4 hours), I decide to explore the University. I discover that there are a lot of extracurricular activities and courses. I can participate in some sports activities, or even learn musical instruments. They look fun and replete of fulfillment, but I must not forget that you need to have time to study. What am I going to choose?

I have 2 options: or I learn one of many classical instruments (like the piano), or I learn the guitar.

Sedentary lifestyle.

I've just got out of several months of confinement, my sedentary lifestyle made me inapt at sports. I am so breathless and tired after having run 500 meters. I decide to choose another activity.

It was a tough decision.

Sometimes, people need to make some sacrifices in order to have a good diploma and a good career. After, making this choice, I decide to go home (this first day in university was exhausting!) Suddenly, when leaving the building by the secretariat, I find on the ground an administrator access code for the computer network of the business school. In a way, it could come in handy because I could cheat on all exams and modify my grades. However, it's maybe illegal to gain unauthorized access to the school informatics system. Will I give back the access code to one of the secretaries or keep it and use it?

Bad decision.

Throughout all of my first year of university, I used this access code to modify my grades. Everything looked good for my studies. Until this morning at 6 o'clock, when I hear 3 knocks on my front door. I open the door and I see two police officers who want to talk to me. I let them go inside my residence and make the two strong coffees with two sugars that they asked for. They tell me that my teachers thought it was weird that I was a top student when I was absent to a lot of courses and the fact that my grades on the computer were not the same as my grades on the copies of my exams. They accuse me of hacking the informatics network of the school, arrest me, and I am now expelled from the HEC for life.

40 hours of practice per day.

I really wanted to learn the third movement of Moonlight Sonata. However, I could not handle both studying and practicing the piano multiple hours a day. So, I made a burnout and left my studies in business management.

No Stairway, Denied.

I discovered a huge passion for playing "Smoke On the Water" and "Enter Sandman" over and over. This passion led me to quit my studies and go work in a guitar store. However, I will never make a big enough salary to buy my dream guitar, a Gibson Les Paul.

Good decision.

I didn't need to cheat to have good grades. I studied hard and became a top student. The time passed, and now that I am halfway through my program, I need to choose my specialization for my BBA (Bachelor of Business Administration). They are a lot of options like: Applied Economics, Business Analytics, Business Intelligence, Entrepreneurship, Finance (like banking), Human Resources Management (HR), International Business, Logistics and Operations Management, Marketing, and even Professional Accounting. I take some time to decide in which specialization I want to study in, and I hesitate over studying in Human Resources, Finance or Marketing. Which one will I choose?

The humanist manager.

Human Resources has always been the perfect fit for me. I like to work with people, I like to make sure that they have everything they need to make the best performance, I like to encourage others, and I like to make the work life of my employees better.

The artistic manager.

Studying in Marketing has always been my dream. I like to create products and sell them to a certain audience, I like to study what people want, and I like to optimize and promote products and services.

The logical manager.

Studying in Finance has always been right for me. I like and want to pursue my mathematics and Statistics courses, I like to solve problems in a creative and logical way, and I would like to help companies grow their revenue.

Time to start my career.

After years of studies, I finally got my diploma in BBA with my specialization. Now, that I am in the job market, I sent my resume for a vacant position to a lot of business. Two business responded to me, one is a small business who offers me a high position, and one is a well-known corporation who offers me a low-level position. Which offer will I accept?

Choice 1 : The vacant position of the small business.

Choice 2 : The vacant position of the well-known business.

Too good to be true.

At the beginning, it was a dream job. I had a better salary and a better work condition then my friends who are, like me, new graduates. However, the years went by, and I never had any promotions or salary raises (unlike my friends). The worst part was that I could not go work in another company in a similar position without starting from the start, because the small business I worked for has no reputation. I was stuck in a dead-end job.

Climb the hierarchical ladder.

This is a foot in the door. This small position is going to be very useful for finding a great position one day. I'm going to learn the ropes to be better in management, instead of being in a stressful high position where I will not know what to do with my small experience.

Save money or spend it.

My two weeks of work were great. I'm learning a lot and my boss is proud of me. I've just received my first paycheck. I'm young, and it's a great time to start setting money aside for my retirement (and plan a budget), but, in the other hand, it's a great time to spend my money like there is no tomorrow while I don't have too many responsibilities (buying high-end designer clothes or a nice car). Will I put money aside for my retirement or put money aside for unimportant objects in the long term?

The years will pass by and I will have a lot of debts. I will have no retirement plans and my small pension will not be big enough for traveling or doing a lot of activities. I should have saved a lot more money for those decades.

Overtime.

I finally decided to save some money for my retirement. I will be able to travel, do some activities, eat out and, in general, appreciate life. It was a good decision. After, organizing my budget (putting money in a TFSA and a RRSP) all weekend long, I return to work this Monday. Since I'm the new person in the office, my boss asks me to do overtime as usual.

Misconduct.

We are three employees doing overtime in the office, me and two others who are in senior positions. I'm almost finished with my work, when I see one of the two employees doing sexual harassment to the other. At first, it was just some harmless flirtation, but the employee started to be very persistent and aggressive. I'm afraid to call out someone who is higher in the hierarchy than me, but, at the same time, it would be unethical to not intervene. Will I intervene?

Choice 1 : Yes.

I was maybe the safest decision, but I am not proud of myself. I am ashamed of myself and can't work anymore in this business anymore. I resign and start over in the job market.

Promotion and salary raise!

I intervene, and the perpetrator laughs at me and said that I was in big trouble. I couldn't sleep all night long because I was stressed out about losing my job. The next morning, my boss call me into his office, I was sure that I was going to lose my job. He asks me to sit and tells me that he fired the perpetrator and the victim asked him to give me this new vacant position.

With my new promotion and salary raise, it would be a good idea to make a business card. I ask for an appointment with a card designer. The next Sunday, during the design of my card, he asks me which design I want between : Bone with Stilian Rail, Eggshell with Romanian type, raised lettering and pale nimbus white or subtle off-white coloring with a watermark.

All of the good decisions I made so far brought me to a fulfilling career and a great salary. I maybe made some mistake along the way, but at the end I succeed in what a lot of business management students aspire to be: a hard-working and ambitious manager who work in the specialization he wanted to work in, someone who is not afraid to stand for his values, and someone who makes tough decision for a better future.
