Major Career Decision.

Important decision for my finale year.

I just completed the third year of my fashion-marketing program at University of Montreal. It was overwhelming but definitely worth the hard work. I am now in my final year of my program and I have to either decide to obtain an internship locally or getting one abroad. There are some major factors that can influence the choice that I have to make. After completing this final year, I will be able to start my career in the field that I want to. This is definitely the hardest decision that I have to make!

Choice 1 : Choose an internship locally.

Choice 2 : Choose an internship abroad.

University of Montreal

Choose an internship locally.

I decided to choose an internship locally. I am happy with this decision since I will be near my family and friends and stay in my hometown. Staying locally also gave me the chance to work with two of the major fashion companies in Canada. I am sure that either choice that I make will be a great in-depth experience that I will gain. I am definitely looking forward to these internships.

Choice 1 : Internship at Aldo.

Choice 2 : Internship at Zara.

Choose an internship abroad.

I finally decided to pursue my internship abroad. I was very skeptical about this decision but more often than not, studying abroad gives you an important personal development and new perspectives on different cultures when coming back home. I will also see a side of my major that I was not exposed to back home. This will definitely help me when I come back and try to obtain the position that I want to. I have been given the chance to decide between two cities that are major influences in the fashion world.

Choice 1 : Choose an internship in Milan.

Internship at Aldo.

After further considerations, I decided to pursue my internship at Aldo. Aldo is one of the major players in the Canadian fashion world and it can help me learn the ropes in the marketing industry. During my interview with the human resource department, I was offered a vacant position to become the assistant manager of digital and social media marketer. This is a great career opportunity for me. They also offered me a great package with a premium wage and amazing benefits. The only thing is that they weren’t guaranteeing me a full time position after my internship.

Choice 1 : Accept the internship at Aldo.

Choice 2 : Decline the internship at Aldo.

Internship at Zara.

I made a choice to select an internship at Zara. This company is known worldwide in the fashion world. I can definitely benefit from obtaining on-the-job-training with this company. During my first interview with the human resource department, I wasn’t too pleased with position I was offered. Though I was guaranteed a permanent position after my internship, they offered me an internship in the administration's office. They told me that I needed to work my way up to get to the marketing department. I find that this can definitely hinder my development. I also wasn’t too pleased with the office politics. They oblige us to look a certain way when going to the office. I definitely have some think about my final decision.

Choice 2 : Decline offer from Zara.

Accept the internship at Aldo.

I decided to accept the offer from Aldo. I know that they didn’t guarantee me a full time position but with everything they offered, I just couldn’t say no. I can’t wait to meet my future coworkers and get started with learning about the marketing environment.

Decline the internship at Aldo.

I decided to decline the offer from Aldo. The stress of not having a guaranteed full time position was overwhelming. I’ll have to set up a new meeting with my program advisor to help me find a new internship.

I finally decided to go with the internship at Zara. I know the position and salary that they offered me isn't what I am looking for but I just couldn’t refuse the chance to work with a world known company. I will do well in this trainee position once I get a foot in the door. I will show them that I deserve a marketing position.

Decline offer from Zara.

With the offer that Zara offered me, I had no choice but to decline. I just felt that I wasn’t receiving the income that I deserved. Also, it would have been a dead-end-job and I wouldn’t have liked it. Let’s hope for the best.

Outcome of the internship at Aldo.

Accepting the internship at Aldo turned out to be the best decision I have ever made. The statistics that I was able to pull off were out of this world. I was even able to receive the employee of the month while I was a trainee. At the end of it, they offered me a full time position with great compensations and a good pension plan. I will finally be able to mortgage my dream house. I have never been this happy in my life.

Working for Zara turned out to be a horrible experience. First off, the managers were very bias about new ideas. Every time I came up with something new, they would never listen to me or give me the chance to express. I was also on the receiving end of sexual harassment behaviour from my manager. When I went to report it, the HR department decided not to do anything about it. I decided to quit within the first week of my internship and will pursue a different career path.

Choose an internship in Milan.

I finally chose the internship in Milan since they are the heart of the fashion world. I will miss my family and friends but this is really going to help me achieve valuable knowledge to bring back home in the fashion-marketing world. I have a choice between two major companies. The first is Prada and the second one is Versace. Either one I select will be great to have on my job resume.

Choose an internship in New York.

I chose to have my internship in New York. New York is a key player in the fashion-marketing world and will bring me valuable knowledge. It is also a culture that I am very familiar with and I can’t wait to visit the city and make new friends. There are also important events like the New York fashion week that I would like to take part in. I can’t wait to get started.

Choose internship with Prada.

After the interview with Prada, I was quite pleased with what I was offered. I was offered a great salary and a great opportunity to work hands on in the marketing department. The other part of the interview is that my internship was on a volunteer basis. This means that I will be learning from the best in the marketing industry but without being paid. This trip abroad is already costing me a lot but this experience can be worth it.

I accepted the offer that Prada made me. This didn’t turn to be a good experience for me. With no income coming in, I had to get a job on weekends. This became overwhelming for me and I wasn’t able to perform at my best. I was also putting myself in too much debt, which led to my decision of ending my internship early and coming back home.

Choice 1 : The end.

After strong consideration, I decided to join the Versace team. Just after few weeks, I knew it was the perfect fit. I was already one of the best performers in the whole marketing department. I was even able to meet the head of design in the company. She was very pleased with my work and gave me great advice. The work environment was very fun and exciting. I also took advantage of having a salary and paid rent to travel across Europe. This has been the best experience of my life.

Outcome of New York.

Going to New York was a bad idea. While I was on an internship with Tiffany and Co, I met some friends that weren’t the best influence on me. I would skip work assignments to visit the city with my new friends. Though I was given a great opportunity, I was more focused on having fun. I wasn't being thoughtful of my future career. They decided to let me go within the first two weeks of the internship.
