Basics of Psychology.

Standing on the shoulders of giants.

Hello, I am currently studying Psychology at Ahuntsic College. There are different approaches when it comes to treating mental illness. Such as the Behavioral approach, Psychoanalytic approach, the Gestalt and the Humanistic approach.

Choice 1 : Behavioral approach.

Choice 2 : Psychoanalysis.

Choice 3 : The gestalt.

Choice 4 : The humanistic approach.

Giants

Behavioral approach.

This approach consists only focusing on the behavioral aspect of humans. And since every behavior is learned (conditioned), mental illness or mental problems come from bad learning. There are two types of conditioning.

Choice 1 : Classical conditioning.

Choice 2 : Operant conditioning.

Behavior

Psychoanalysis.

Psychoanalysis is an approach founded by Sigmund Freud at the end of the 19th century. According to this approach, mental illness and disorders are due to a cooping mechanism called the sub-conscience or it can also be the product of the influences of the Superego and Id on the Ego. These are Freud's two psyche models.

Choice 1 : Freud's first model.

Choice 2 : Freud's second model.

Sigmund Freud

The gestalt.

Gestalt is a German word that signifies ''the whole''. For me, this is the best approach since it encompasses all the other three approaches, thus giving the psychologist a wider range of skills and tools when it comes to treating mental illness or disorders.

Choice 1 : The behavioral approach

Choice 2 : Psychoanalytic approach

Choice 3 : Humanistic approach

Gestalt

The humanistic approach.

According to the humanistic approach, the goal of every human is to realize his or her full potential, therefore the cause of a mental illness or disorder is something (object, person, situation) that keeps us from realizing that full potential. Also this approach doesn't see their clientele as patients but more like a normal client since according to this approach every human has the necessary tools to self-actualize. The most common tool to express this approach would be Maslow's pyramid.

Choice 1 : Maslow's pyramid.

Classical conditioning.

Classical conditioning or Pavlovian conditioning (discovered by Russian psychologist Pavlov). Is a form of conditioning that consists of associating a neutral stimulus with an unconditional stimulus thus producing a learned response.

Choice 1 : Operant conditioning.

Pavlov's dog

Operant conditioning.

Operant conditioning is method of learning by punishing or rewarding a certain behavior. If, a certain behavior is punished then it will have the tendency to stop. In return, if it is rewarded it will have the tendency to continue. There are two forms or punishment or reward.

Choice 1 : Positive operant conditioning.

Choice 2 : Negative operant conditioning.

Operant Conditioning

Positive operant conditioning.

Positive operant conditioning means that you ever give a reward or you give a punishment. In other words you either add a pleasant stimulus or an unpleasant one in order to encourage or discourage the desired behavior.

Choice 1 : Negative operant conditioning.

Positive

Negative operant conditioning.

Negative operant conditioning consists of removing a punishment or a reward. In other words you either remove an unpleasant stimulus (reward) or you remove a pleasant stimulus (punishment).

Choice 1 : The beginning of a long journey.

Negative

Freud's first model.

Freud's first model of psyche or the Freud Iceberg. It describes three levels of the mind. The conscious level consists of the part of the mind that the person is conscious about. The preconscious level consists of memories that we can recall and bring in the conscious part of the mind. The unconscious part of the mind, according to Freud, is the part of the mind that we don't have voluntary access to it and that influences a person's behavior and thought.

Choice 1 : Freud's second model.

Freud's second model.

Freud's second model consists of three instances that are always influencing on each other. The Ergo which is the person itself, the Id which is the ''drive'' (our desires) and the Superergo which represent the rules and norms of society. According to Freud, the Ergo is in the middle and battles with the pressures of the Superergo and the Id.

Choice 1 : The beginning of a long journey.

Maslow's pyramid.

Maslow's pyramid of needs is a hierarchy of needs that all humans have. On the bottom being the physical needs and at the top being the self-actualization.
