I was raised in a middle class family. We had a small house, one car and a dog. We lived a humble life and had a lot of financial troubles going up. I always felt different from my other classmates and friends. So, when I finished high school, I had a couple of choices that could determine my future, and I was lost at what to do.
Choice 1 : Go work for my shady uncle
Choice 2 : Go to university and take up a large amount of debt
I've known my uncle my whole life but, I was never able to figure out what he did for a paycheck. So, when I asked him for a job, he was more than happy to offer me a position. Turns out, he owns and operates a mattress store. On the first day, I got on-the-job training and started working full time after a week. The store was always empty and had no customers what so ever. So, a week later, my uncle came up to me and asked if I could deliver an "order" to a client.
Choice 1 : Get curious and ask questions about the delivery.
Choice 2 : Deliver the 'order' no questions asked.
My whole life I've heard that going to university and getting a degree was the best solution to have a great life. But the problem is that nowadays, getting a university degree can cost up to 70 000$ per year. So when I decided to go to university and pursue a business degree, I had to come up with a solution to help pay for my degree.
Choice 1 : Go to the bank and apply for a student loan
Choice 2 : Go work for my uncle to finance my education
So, I finally decided to go and apply for a student loan to pursue my degree. I looked up some banks online and went to the closest bank and started the application there. After two weeks of waiting, I finally get a call saying that my loan was accepted but the interest rate was very high because I didn't have anyone with a high income to co-sign the loan.
Choice 1 : Sign the loan and go to University.
Choice 2 : Refuse the offer and go work for the uncle.
My whole life I've been skeptical about everything. So, naturally, when my uncle told me about the order and that I needed to deliver it, I started asking questions left and right. I reminded my uncle of my skeptical nature and that I didn't want to undermine him but, he tried to shut me down and told me that when the delivery is over I'll be getting a 'premium wage'
Choice 1 : Make the delivery since I needed the money.
Choice 2 : Refuse to make the delivery without clear answers.
The whole operation seemed sketchy and skeptical but, I went through with the delivery just because I needed the money. A couple of weeks pass by and I don't hear a word about the delivery until two cops come knocking at my door at 7 in the morning telling me that my uncle has been arrested and asking me if I knew what he'd been doing.
Choice 1 : Cooperate with the cops and tell them about the perpetrator
Choice 2 : Lie to the cops.
When I confronted my uncle with my doubts and questions, he snapped immediately and told me I have two choices; Either I make the delivery on time or I can leave work and never come back again.
Choice 1 : Shut up and make the delivery.
Choice 2 : Leave the job and go to university for higher education.
University is pretty tough considering I'm living off student loans from the bank. But, I always had this idea in my mind that all my suffering will end and I will life a great life when I finish my degree.
Choice 1 : Get straight A's in all your classes and get a great job
When I said I wanted to cooperate with the law officers, they offered me many choices; snitch on my uncle and testify in court against him, and I get permanent support and protection from them or I testify anonymously and get nothing.
Choice 1 : Cooperate completely and send your uncle to jail
For some reason, I felt that I owed my uncle and I also felt that I need to keep what he does a secret and away from the cops. So, I didn't have much of a choice but to lie to them.
Choice 1 : Lie to the cops.
As soon as I said to the cops that I was not going to cooperate, They arrested me and took me in as a primary suspect.
Choice 1 : Get charged with cooperation and go to jail.
