A Journey allows people to make positive changes in their lives even though challenges must be overcome. The Academic and non-academic challenges I faced while transitioning from high school to college, which was not only a major life event in itself but presented a trying and stressful experience. I was confronted with too many choices. I just graduated from high school and I applied to different colleges witch all accepted my admissions in the first round. A tough resolution had to be reached and quickly.

I studied at Bois de Boulogne College for three years, in Business Administrative Technology. It was time to apply for my internship and complete the program so that I could earn my degree and graduate. Which company would represent the best opportunity for me?

I worked at my Mom's Travel Agency was completing my internship and learning the ins-and-outs of the business. As a Travel Agent, I got invaluable lessons on how to sell transportation, accommodations, insurance, tours, and refunds. In addition, one of the agents taught me ticket reservations for the clients over the phone. There was a significant waiting period to talk to a representative of the Tour Operator that can be maddening. Also, the consumer always wants the best price there is on the market leaving you with a small margin of the profit on the ticket price considered a drawback by many of the staff because sometimes it’s just not feasible to give them the discount they want. All these challenges undermined my ability to stay focused at the end deal of my internship, I suffered major depression. And what broke the camel’s back was that one day, as I was answering the phone a man suffering from mental illness walked in and sat down at my desk demanding a ticket to flee the country. We later learned that he was a serial killer by the police officer, I felt solicitous. Needless to say that I love my mom but either I stay and get sucked up in this dead-end job or work for a big corporation.

I started my internship as a Teller for a Bank, to finally get a foot in the door at the Royal Bank of Canada. One of the bankers taught me all about credit, debit, deposit, bank fees, and exchange rate. Then one day, one of my mentors was going to teach me all about setting up a mortgage for a customer's account, but as faith would have it, nothing went according to plan. I was counting the money in the drawer at the start of my shift. When an angry-looking man came in the bank with a ski mask pointing a gun at me, demanding I give him all the money I had in my drawer and in the safe. Luckily for me, one of my colleagues pressed the emergency button connected to the police station and within minutes the perpetrator was apprehended. I did not feel like completing my internship I was in a state of shock and the doctor gave me a medical notice for a leave of absence. What to do take a sabbatical year off or start a new program?

Old Montreal College in Special Education Technology.
I was working at a community center for young adults with special needs for the last three-year now. It's time to earn a promotion by getting a degree in Special Education Technology. Let’s fast forwards to a few years later, working hard in the day and going to school at night, in addition to completing an internship at a home for the elderly, needless to say, that I was exhausted. I had to decide whether I was still suited for the job or should I change careers?

I started working at the community center at my friend’s request because they urgently needed employees. My job consisted of making activities and recreational calendars for every season and going on outings with a small group of members permitting them to adapt to society. I got to interact and form a very strong bond between some of the young adults that came to the center. We had to keep an evaluation file for every member and work closely with their home carer and social worker each had a program that we had to follow and keep track off. In addition, all activities that were held at the center were created not only for recreational purposes but to get the member to acquire skills. Then as time passed I noticed a bad atmosphere occupying my workplace, some call it office politics. But I was not alone most of my colleagues felt the alienation, we all agreed that our boss was too fastidious and bias, more often than not she would demand something, but she was never satisfied, she can naturally deter an ambitious young woman. I thought I needed to be more qualified for her to get to respect my point of view. I decided I needed to go back to college and get a degree in Special Education Technology. Then as time passed after burning the candles at both ends, I needed to decide whether to keep working for the Community Center or change fields and finish my last courses in Special Education Technology and finally get my degree.

I completed the program of Paralegal Technology at Ahuntsic College and graduated with flying colors. Now I'm looking for a job in any legal department. But first I know I had to complete an on-the-job training session followed by a period of probation. Where to start, within the private or public sector?

I was hired by the HR department of a legal corporate firm called Fasten to a Paralegal position. The HR department explained to me the income and premium wage I will receive after the probation period, and we thoroughly went over the pension plan for my retirement. Finally, this new world of litigation can be a wonderfully fulfilling profession. They assigned a junior partner to be my mentor, so I could learn the ropes for my OJT. I learned a lot from him about lawsuits involving bankruptcy, conflict of interest, signing contracts, tax law, licensing, accounting to name a few. Then after about five months while handling a case of intellectual property rights, I noticed his attempts at mild flirtation with me. I was not immune to his attempts and did not know what to do; I could not pursue this any longer it was against the firm’s policy. I had to decide should I stay or should I go and work elsewhere?

There was a vacant position opening as a court clerk for Montreal’s Courthouse and I jumped at the chance to start a career. After the interview, the HR conducted a background check to authenticate the information on my resume and application. I have been working at the courthouse at the courthouse for about a week, when one day, while I was busy preparing the court's records, I noticed the junior partner from the Fasten firm holding legal documents and walking straight at me. He smiled then he handed me the documents and exhibits that must be filled. I set them aside and with one hand grabbed the files required for the criminal trial, and without a second thought grabbed the young lawyer’s hand as we almost ran to the courtroom. He was amused, his drive of work and his passion for the law made him curious about the criminal trial. As we entered the room I gave my colleague the document for the court case, and we sat down before a full room, the judge entered, my colleague, said, "all rise". The criminal trial began before a grand jury; the accused was charged and arrested for first-degree murder. We sat there for an hour then we both left the room to get back to work. I love my job even the drudgery of certain tasks makes me smile and at times the load of work can be maddening but it’s worth it at the end of the day, I will certainly stick around and conclude the Paralegal's journey.
