First day as a Paramedic.

Partner

New partner.

My name is Guillaume and you are about to read a story about my first day as a paramedic. One of the weirdest days of my life. I just graduated from college and now I am ready to be a full time Paramedic. So here I am at my first day of work meeting my new partner. At the first sight I already knew that this was a weird guy. I was about to make the usual presentation with the hand-shake but of course it didn't happen that way. While I was in front of him waiting for him to shake my hand, he was standing there looking at me.

Choice 1 : grab his hand.

Choice 2 : Do not grab his hand.

Partner

Grab his hand.

That moment was weird, I was standing in front of him with my hands in front of me waiting for him to grab it. We were looking in each other eye, and then after the longest 10 second of my life, he grabbed it! Sam: - You seem like a determined guy! I like it! My name is Sam, or you can call me pumpkin. It's up to you. Instantly the alarm started, it was time to go on a call.

Choice 1 : Run to the ambulance.

Do not grab his hand.

My new partner was looking at me the same way if I was an alien. I decided to let go. I was standing in front of him, we were looking in each other eye. I don't know how many seconds or minutes have passed but finally the alarm started to ring started running to the ambulance saying: -My name is Sam ! Let's work partner ! It was a nice talk !

Choice 1 : Run to the ambulance.

Partner

Run to the ambulance.

The engine was already turned on. In the radio we could hear Radio: - We got an emergency, the person who called was acting weird. He says that he is feeling an angina, and he is waiting on the roof top. It does not make sense so be careful he could be on drugs. Sam my partner told me that more often than not, its somebody who need attention, nothing serious. At school, they teach us to never underestimate an emergency and always act for the worst case scenario, but when I told that to Sam he just said: Sam: - Watch and learn, it is time for you to learn the rope. Arrived at a high building of over 12 apartments, we could see a man on the edge of the rooftop and over 20 pedestrians at the bottom. Sam: - Guillaume, you can stay in the car or follow me outside, but let me talk. I handle this.

Choice 1 : Stay in the ambulance.

Choice 2 : Follow Sam outside.

Paramedic

Stay in the ambulance.

I chose to stay in the ambulance. It was obvious that Sam was about to do something completely stupid, so I just put my arm on the edge of the window and was ready to enjoy the show. Before leaving the truck he told me that 19 out of 20 would never jump. Sam jumped out of the ambulance with a self trust that I could not explain. He started yelling. Sam: - Hello! I am the paramedic. You called for the angina? It could also be an arrhythmia. That means the heart beats with an irregular rhythm. You could die anytime, OR ! You want people to look at you and for once be the center of the world? You want to flirt with the death? You are a thief ! A thief of time, our time! Now get down the roof before the police arrest you ! Without even a little warning, the guy jumped between all the pedestrians. When he hit the ground, everyone heard a big crunchy sound. Blood spatter everywhere in the public, and on the ambulance. I was stunned, I could not believe what just happened. I could see from my sit people screaming, running and Sam was looking at the guy on the floor to see if he is breathing. He was acting completely normal. He slowly walked to my window and told me: Sam:- There is nothing else to do. We did all we can and he still jumped. Good work.

Choice 1 : Go back to the office.

Safe

Follow Sam outside.

I followed Sam outside already ready for the worst to happen with that strange guy. We were side by side and the first thing he told me is: Sam: - If he wanted to jump it would already be done. Do not worry I know how to handle this. He started to talk with the guy on the rooftop. Sam: - Hey! You! Come down here right now! Your life will not get better on the edge of that rooftop, so stop playing games and come down! The guy instantly jumped. He hit the ground so hard that he explode. There was blood everywhere. I am not the sensitive type of man but that was disgusting. At this moment, between all the shouting we could hear someone saying help. A woman was unconscious. A guy, probably her husband told us that she can not sustain blood. The only thing to do is to wait for her to gain consciousness back. At this moment, Sam started to yell : Sam : - We probably got an apnea! Bring her some air! We need equipment! At the same time, the woman woke up and Sam added up: Sam: - Our job is done here. Leave the rest to the police. It was time to go back to the truck.

Choice 1 : Go back to the office.

Safety

Go back to the office.

I did not say a single word during our way back. One thing was sure, that guy named Sam is completely crazy and should never do that job. I was looking at him, and he has that same confidence that I could not explain. The only thing same said was : Sam: - We can not save them all, but at least we tried! And damn that guy was juicy! The story you just read is the same I told to the administration to make sure that this man could not ever put one foot back in an ambulance.
