Introduction.

I had always dreamed of becoming an elementary school teacher. Now my first day is finally here. I was really nervous and excited at the same time. Everything seems to be going very good in the classroom until one of my students raised their hands and said that they don't understand anything. I was choked because I was following the curriculum they assigned me. Should I follow my lesson plan and continue teaching them the same was I've been doing al day or should I adapt my lesson to their needs...

I decided to stick the original lesson schedule because I was scared that the school board will know that I didn't follow the instructions. With this choice, my students will have a lot of difficulties catching up with some of the lessons. I did a small activity, so my students can have fun and learn at the same time. Everything was great except that once I looked over none of them were actually doing school work. I asked them what was happening and one girl said that they don't understand what they are reading. Should I adapt my lesson with the basics or should I keep the course as it is.

Adapt to my students needs.

I considered that everyone was way behind, and I would rather take my time, and making them learn slowly, so they can learn fasts in the future. I planned my whole lesson around knowing all the basics. From counting to ten to learning the alphabet. After one day my students were learning really fast because of the new schedule. Sadly I was scared about arriving in time at the end of the year because we were seeing things they should've learned last year. Do I take a chance and continue adapting or should I change back the lesson plan to the original one?

The end of the school is coming, and I'm way behind the schedule. But I'm proud of my students because they achieved so much during the last five months. With all the late exams we didn't do yet, I decided to do a rally, and I can grade them in time with them thinking it's a fun way to do boring stuff. Three exams done and all of them passed. I've never thought that I could do it in time. I am really proud of my first year with teaching in my first elementary school!

It's almost the end of the year and all of my students probably hates me because they don't like my lesson plan. I've received three emails from parents saying I'm a really bad teacher because their children don't learn anything in school, and that what they learn is too advanced for them. I should've adapted my lesson plan because half of my students are failing the class, and it means that I'm going to lose my contract. Should I contact the principal or finish the year with a failure?

I decided to continue adapting the plan, and because of that my students were learning so fast I finished my schedule on time. They all passed my class and I get to keep my contract for next year. The principal was not amused with me changing the lesson plan, but he said at the end they all passed with more knowledge they could have left without my help.

I changed back to the original plan because I was scared to miss deadlines and assignments I had to correct in time. Most of the students were catching up, but some were failing my class. At the end of the year, I was back on track and decided to email some parents about their children in need of tutoring. I graded everyone accordingly to what they needed, and there was a lot of crying and anger because it was really hard for my students to do another year with counting and learning the alphabet. I think that is what is best for them, and I'm still going to be teaching in this school.

Since my students were way behind and me as well, I decided to contact the principal about their lesson plan. They said I had to follow it because it is mandatory for every school to be teaching the same thing. I was really mad because my students couldn't learn anything. I decided to quit my job and go back to school because it was really hard seeing students failing because of the system.

I decided to forget about helping the students and modifying my schedule because it is too late now we are at the end of the year and most of them can't do regular basic school work. I have no other choice to make all of them fail and retake their year with me next year. But this time I'll be prepared. My first year as a new elementary school teacher was really hard, and it might end with a failure but next year they will become better and bigger.
