I decided to go to the University of Sherbrooke to study psychology. I had to decide if I wanted to work part-time with a good wage since I could work as special care counselor. I could also focus only on my studies to get straight A's.

How Do You React When Dealing with Violence?

I started working as a special care counselor at a primary school. One of the children who struggled with tactile defensiveness started to become violent because another student was touching him. I had to separate them and the autistic student hit me.

Moving Abroad in the Far North.

I moved abroad in the Far North and I started working with First People. I had found my purpose, I was learning about a different culture and what I learned among them was invaluable. I got blocked by the office politics because my boss wanted me to do things a certain way, but I knew it was wrong. My client had a mood disorder, and he wanted to go fishing.

Working Part-Time to Earn Money.

I started working part-time, and it allowed me to make money to pay for my studies and avoid debts. Unfortunately, psychology was very hard, because I had to perform very well. It was hard doing both, but my grades were still good. Should I revise my time management?

Focus on My Studies.

I chose to focus only on my studies, and I was studying the concepts thoroughly. My grades were very high which is essential to access the doctorate. A professor approached me, and he offered me a job at the laboratory to do research, I was feeling a sense of fulfillment.

Be Empathetic.

I stayed calm, and my empathy allowed me to understand why the young boy acted this way. I knew that being touched caused him a great deal of anxiety. I did some active listening, and I proposed him to go the sensory room, so he could feel better. I needed to talk to the other student, how did I proceed?

Changing Job.

I decided to change job because I realized that I was too sensitive. I had to choose between working with adults who struggled with substance abuse or working with people with children who had learning disabilities.

Continue Working Part-Time.

I continue working part-time, I was working with children with intellectual disabilities. My grades were getting lower, and I had a lot of anxiety. Eventually, it was too much, and I started to fail.

A Great Opportunity.

I accepted the offer, and it was the best decision I could make. To access the doctorate, the straight A's aren't enough, you have to stand out by doing research, and you need to acquire some experience. Eventually, I finish my doctorate and became a psychologist.

Listening to Your Heart.

I listened to my heart, and did it my way. I decided to respect my patient request, and we decided to go fishing. She was happy, being in nature helped her with her depression. My boss was angry, but he realized that this method was good. I kept working there for many years.

Forgetting Your Values.

I listened to my boss and forgot about my values. I didn't respect my patient by using the usual method and by asking her questions. She committed suicide. I was devastated, I felt guilty of her death. If only I had respected her wishes.

Volunteering.

I started to volunteer at a helpline, it allowed me to practice my active listening. It was beneficial to my studies, and it would eventually help me to become a psychologist.

Working in Hospitals.

I started working in hospitals with people who struggled with substance abuse and eating disorder. I had to help them changer their behavior because it was putting them at a high risk. I did a lot of crisis intervention. It was a stressful job, but I was learning the ins-and-outs.

Children with Learning Disabilities.

I started working with children who had learning disabilities such as dyslexia or dyscalculia. I was making individualized plans to help the students succeed at school. I was very happy and kept working there for many years.

Quitting My Job.

I chose to quit my job, but I regretted it because I had abandoned the people who needed my help.

I chose to stay, and I kept helping my other clients. My resilience helped me to keep going on, and the guilt faded with time.

I got angry at the children which made me lose my job! Why would I do that?!

I asked to see the other student, and I gently explained to him that his comrade was very sensitive to being touched. He understood and he never did it again. I kept working at that school for many years, I loved working with students with ADHD because they were creative, and full of energy.
