You recently heard from your father that his colleague's son decided to apply to the local Fire Safety Academy and that he first needs to take on a series of entrance exams before being fully enrolled. You know that this program's admission rate is very low and that only the people with the strongest academic backgrounds are chosen. Even though you have never pulled off straight A's in school, you still consider applying because you have always been interested in this program. Your dad also tells you that you have the option to explore the job market to gain some working experience and earn a salary. You know that this next decision will completely change your life. Which path will you choose?

To be officially enrolled into this year's program, you first have to pass an interview in which you are asked a few questions about your background by retired firefighters who represent the interview panel. Selling yourself has never been a problem to you because you are quite an extrovert. You manage to stay composed during your interview and not be overwhelmed by the questions that the panel are asking. After an hour of questions, the interviewers are happy to tell you that you aced the interview and can move on to the physical test. You have to complete an obstacle course in less than two minutes with a weight vest on you. The start of the course goes well, but when you come near the end you feel your legs burning. You are definitely out of breath, but there are only ten seconds left on the clock to complete the obstacle course. What do you decide to do?

Explore the job market.

It is very difficult for you to find a job that seems interesting. Every offer that you see looks boring. You search on the internet for a few days and then narrow your choices to two similar options. The first one is a position as a worker in a furniture warehouse. The second one is also a position as a worker in a warehouse, but the company sells specific products to the plumbers of your area. You are not really excited by both of your options and your parents are putting pressure on you to decide. The furniture company can give you a better wage than the plumbing company, but the experience that you could get in the plumbing field is unmatched. Where will you decide to work?

Push through the pain and finish strong.

You pass the finish line, and you fall to the ground. You look up at the timer to realize that you completed successfully the obstacle course with a second left on the clock! The person in charge of the physical test helps you get up and congratulates you on becoming one of the newest recruits! You can't contain your happiness, and you have a wide smile on your face because you are a part of the organization. Now it is time to go back home to tell the news to your parents and prepare for the first day of the academy tomorrow. Suddenly, a few guys that also passed the tests approach you and invite you to go party in a club downtown. You are really tired, but you also don't want to miss an opportunity to get to learn about your new classmates. What will you do?

You are exhausted and your body can't keep up with the demand. As you see the finish line and run towards it, you stumble over your own foot and fall face first on the floor just before reaching the end. You are powerless and forced to see your time go past the 2-minute mark and realize that you just failed the physical test. The person in charge of the test runs in your direction to check if you are hurt. After examining your body, he tells you that you broke your ankle in the process of falling. You are carted off the gym in a wheelchair and sent straight to the hospital in an ambulance. During the ride, you contemplate what you could have done better to avoid being in this situation. You start to doubt yourself and your capabilities. You can always come back next year and try again for the academy, but you are currently confused, and you don't know if you even want to. This failure will probably haunt you for the rest of your life...

Years go by and you finally landed a promotion. You are now in charge of all the operations that are happening in the warehouse. Your boss gives you a key that unlocks the door of your new office. After all those years of being hindered by your colleagues at work, you are finally left alone to work by yourself in a calm environment. You were never the guy that took part in office politics, and now your hard work has finally paid off. As soon as you put the key in the socket of your office door, you hear a loud noise coming from the warehouse. Now that you are a supervisor, it is your responsibility to go check on your coworkers. You arrive at the warehouse and walk towards what seems to be an item that fell on the floor. As you are crossing aisle 7, a worker who is driving a forklift arrives at full speed at you. He rolls over you, and you die instantly because of the impact. A few weeks later, your boss learns that the driver was in fact drunk during his shift. That's too bad for you...

Years go by. You have gained a lot of experience in the plumbing field even though you've never worked a day in your life as a plumber. All the time that you spent in the warehouse was useful because you learned a lot about the equipment that plumbers use. One day, a firefighter comes into the shop and asks for advice on a specific product. Since you know your stuff pretty well, you give him the advice that he needs, and he is impressed and satisfied with your service. The conversation goes on, and he explains to you that since he only work two 24-hour shifts per week, he can also work in construction as a plumber. You guys exchange your phone numbers, and he tells you to call him if you ever want to quit your job and work for him as a trainee. You are not sure about what to do with this information. What job will you choose?

You decide to go party with your new friends because you think it is a great idea to create new bonds with them before the start of the academy. The leader of the group decides to buy tequila shots for everybody in the club because he is filthy rich. The crowd goes wild and everyone starts to dance with passion and intensity. As the night goes on, you are having a lot of fun but your head starts to feel dizzy, so you go to the bathroom. Upon returning to the dance floor, you recognize a guy from high school that despised you. As soon as he sees you, he rushes towards you and punch you in the face. You are way too drunk to defend yourself, so the last thing you see is his fist before entering a coma. You wake up a few months later in a hospital bed. You definitely lost your chance at becoming a firefighter because you missed a lot of class this year. That is too bad for you, maybe you should have decided to go home instead of getting sucked up in this mess...

You took a very good decision. You get a full night of sleep and in the morning you feel energized. You woke up by yourself, and you were really skeptical at first because you remembered vividly setting an alarm last night for this morning. You look at your cellphone's screen and realize that you are already fifteen minutes late to this morning's fall in at the Fire Academy. You start panicking. You know that in the Fire Safety field, punctuality is not only considered an asset for a personality, it is a quality that every firefighter must apply in their life at all times. The rules are really strict on those who are late to meetings or class. You hesitate on what to do next to get yourself out of trouble. What will be your next move?

Even though you arrive late to the academy, your honesty and the ownership of your mistake are really appreciated by your instructor and your classmates. You are assigned the grade of captain of your class. You go sit in the front because you want to show your leadership. The day starts with a course on what it's like to be a firefighter. You learn a lot about the structure of command, the positions in a team like a lieutenant, a captain and a chief. After your lunch, you finish the day with a course on all the basic equipment that firefighters use on a day-to-day basis. You learn about how to use fire hydrants, how to unpack hoses and the excellent communication that is required between every firefighter on an intervention. You realize that you are currently living a dream and that you would not want to be anywhere else right now! Good for you, your determination and your willingness to learn will get you far in life! A few years pass, and you are now near the end of your studies...

With the help of your new colleague, you can finally learn the ropes of the job of a plumber. You have a lot of on-the-job-training to do because you are the new intern of his company. You develop a good friendship with the guy and also start to be interested in his firefighting job. You ask a lot of questions about his experience and where does he work. He tells you that you can come visit his station this weekend to see the fire trucks and the fire apparatus. You instantly say yes to him. You are eager to meet the crew and learn more about the job, so you count the days until the next weekend...

You decide to never call back your acquaintance. You still become successful in your field because of your intelligence and your will to learn, but you always wonder what could have been. The guy seemed to know a lot about the Fire Safety and the Plumbing fields, which are connected to each others in many ways. Had you followed him, maybe you would have had bigger opportunities in your life...

Now that you have completed all of your Fire Safety studies, you face an interesting choice. You were born and raised in the city of Montreal, so working for a department in the city that you know by heart just makes sense to you. On the other hand, the city of Laval is one of the fastest growing city in the province of Quebec, so you may have more chance at a long and diverse career if you decide to work there. Both of the cities offered you a job when you finished the Fire Academy, so the choice is yours!

Visit the station.

You arrive at the station with a box full of donuts to show your appreciation of the time that they will take to show you around. The firefighters welcome you and invite you to go sit in the kitchen first. For about an hour you guys talk about the workplace conditions. You hear a lot of horror stories ; from sexual harassment to death threats and misconduct, you learn that a lot of things can happen when a few guys and girls get together for 24 hours straight. Nonetheless, you observe that all of the guys around the table are good people, and you sense a feeling of belonging to a big family. After the conversation, they show you the fire trucks and how they operate them. You feel like you are learning the ropes of a new job as an intern, and you love the feeling. The firefighters seem to really like you as a person and see your interest in their job. They offer you a job if you are willing to go through the Fire Academy first. You hesitate because you don't particularly hate what you are doing your right now in your life. What will you do?

Skip class and stay at home.

You decide to skip class for the whole day because of your ego. You do not want to be put in a position where you have to assume your responsibilities, so you watch movies, eat popcorn and have fun! At the end of the day, you receive a phone call from the director of the academy. He tells you that the HR and the board of direction have decided to kick you out the program because your lack of transparency regarding your absence does not correspond to the type of profiles of individuals that they are looking to train. This dopamine hit and feeling of fulfillment was short-lived. You now have to face your actions and set aside your objective of becoming a firefighter...

You are hired by Laval's Fire Department! As a rookie, you are able to move to different positions on the team because there are a lot of vacant positions. The employees working for this city receive a decent yearly salary, but what you love the most about what you do is the calls and the brotherhood. Years go by, and you have the opportunity to join a new station that is specialized in every call involving hazardous materials. You go for it because you want to gain as much experience possible.

You are hired by Montreal's Fire Department! You quickly gain recognition from your colleagues by your hard work and your values. You really are an asset to your team. Some people say that you work too hard because you never take a leave of absence or a few vacations during the year. Your reputation becomes rock solid, and you gain the notoriety to upgrade your rank multiple times during your career. You go from lieutenant to captain of a battalion, and now you have the opportunity to be a fire chief and take important decisions in the field. You never back down from a challenge, so you accept the position.

You go through a lengthy process of education to become a firefighter, but it does not matter because you are passionate about what you do. You proceed to save lives and never really work a day in your life again because for you it is not a job, it is a vocation.

You accept that it is not made for you and respect what they do for a living and the risks they are willing to take. You continue working for the Construction company of your firefighter friend.

With great responsibilities come great benefits and a very good pension. You finish your career as one of the most rewarded firefighters the department has ever seen. Rookies hear legends about you when they first start working. Even though your body caught up to your drive of work, you are currently enjoying your retirement somewhere on an island. All those sacrifices were worth it in the end!

You become a knowledgeable captain in the department. Hazardous materials are your passion, and they don't hide secrets from you no more. You become invaluable to your team and is very respected by your peers. Your position offers you a premium wage. You are used to almost every call involving a gas detector. You decide to publish a book about your experience and what you saw during your career, which is really appreciated by the public. Your old age will not stop you from doing what you love!
