Between bones and brains: The story of a lost student between medicine and psychology.

Apply to university.

I've finally finished my CEGEP years. It took me two years, but it was worth it. There were ups and downs, and now I'm ready to choose my field of study. University, here I come!

Choice 1 : Apply in medicine.

Choice 2 : Apply in psychology.

graduating students

Apply in medicine.

I'm applying to medical school! This is what I've always wanted to do. I'll be able to treat people and bring back their smiles, and maybe even their will to live. I know it won't be easy, but I think I can do it. Where should I apply?

Choice 1 : Go to UDM.

Choice 2 : Go to Sherbrooke.

medecine

Apply in psychology.

I'm studying psychology. Time passed, and I learned about the functioning of the human mind. I made friends, met new people, and one day, my professor came to see me and asked if I would like to become a psychoanalyst because he knew a psychoanalyst offering an internship. This was like a foot in the door to a specialized field, allowing me to learn the ropes of the profession immediately. What should I do?

Choice 1 : Accept the offer.

Choice 2 : Refuse the offer.

Psychology

Go to UDM.

Wow, it's unbelievable, I got accepted to UDM. I'm going to make so many friends, the campus is close to home and everything, honestly, it's a really beautiful life. Time goes by, and I find myself on the eve of the first day of school. I'm a bit stressed, but it's OK. I can't wait to be there. The next day, I went to school. I walked into the classroom, and I sit at the front. Everything is going as I imagined. The room is huge, the professor is old, wrinkled like a raisin. Suddenly, right in the middle of the lecture, that crazy old teacher points at me and asks me a question that comes out of nowhere, something I've never revised, and that wasn't even part of the lecture at all. What should I do? Do I answer randomly, hoping that, by some fraudulent misunderstanding, it works? Or do I tell her honestly, in front of everyone in the room, that I don't understand what she is saying to me right now?

Choice 1 : Answer honestly.

Choice 2 : Answer by guessing.

stress

Go to Sherbrooke.

It's unbelievable, I got accepted to Sherbrooke. It's a bit far from home, but well, it's better than nothing. It's better than university Laval in Quebec City. Able to make a lot of friends there, even if it's a bit far from home. I'll get out of my parents' grip. But now, I'm facing a dilemma. Do I take an apartment alone? A small apartment where I'll be a bit alone or do I go for a roommate... apartment with someone. But I'll have to stay with that person for the whole semester, at minimum, even if they're the worst person in the world. Which choice would I take? Should I rent alone, even though it costs a lot? Or should I go with a roommate?

Choice 1 : Rent an apartment alone.

Choice 2 : Rent an apartment in a shared flat.

Sherbrooke

Answer honestly.

I take a deep breath and answer with the calmest voice I can, saying that I don't understand her question. Two seconds of silence pass, then the professor, old and wrinkled, smiles and tells me, "That's normal. This morning, I haven't thought it yet. It's to see if you were honest." I sigh. I sit back down, and the lecture continues. At the end of the lecture, I walk out, a bit puzzled by the class I just had, and a guy comes up to me. He's a tall, blonde guy, with blue eyes, and probably popular. "Oh my god, the professor doesn't miss you. You can tell the others are right. That professor is quite nice, but a bit odd. You should avoid her. But well, I choose her because I like when there's action in my class. By the way, my name is Brandon. We are preparing an integration party next week, do you want to come? There will be a lot of girls and alcohol" I face a dilemma. Should I say yes to try to fit in? Knowing that Brandon has a good chance of being popular and knowing a lot of people who can help me in my academic path, or do I rather skip that party? Because, if I'm not mistaking, those parties have a lot of alcohol and drugs, and I don't want to fall into that. I never had any addiction, and I am clearly not going to develop one now, especially at university. What should I do?

Choice 1 : Go to the party.

Choice 2 : Not go to the party.

party

Answer by guessing.

I take a deep breath, and I answer with the most Olympian calm I can and said, " I think the question you are asking me actually belongs to the material we already learn. I think, madam, the answer your looking for is the glycolysis of pseudostratified cells, generating necrosis at the slightest atmospheric disturbance around us. " The class falls into a silence that lasts five long seconds. After those 5 seconds, that feel like an eternity, the class bursts out laughing, and professor too. And as if nothing happened, the professor continued her lecture. I didn't understand that what I just said makes absolutely no sense, and that now I'm the joke of the whole class. The end of the lecture comes, I walked outside, and I go to my bus. When I get on the bus, before the bus can even start moving, I see a girl being bothered by someone. From my perspective, the guy tries to flirt with her. What do I do? The girl really looks annoyed. Do I step in or not?

Choice 1 : Help the girl.

Choice 2 : Let the girl fend for herself.

Bus

Go to the party.

I choose to go to the party. There were girls, drugs, and alcohol, exactly like I expected. I met someone and spent the following years with that girl, but in the end, she cheated on me. I felt into a depression, and I gave up medicine. I ended up working as a crew member at McDonald, and a few years later, when I reach retirement, I received almost nothing. That's it. You made the wrong choice.

Choice 1 : Start again

McDonald

Not go to the party.

I tell him that I can't go to the party, and that I have to go study. He's a bit disappointed, but he lets it go. The years past, and with the studies I have done and the parties I have avoided, I also learned how the body's metabolisms, such as necrosis, work. I have managed to get very good grades, even the best grade in the class. I finish the first part of my program, and now they ask me to choose my specialty. Do I choose family medicine, or do I choose trauma surgery? Two fields that I appreciate a lot.

Choice 1 : Apply to family medicine.

Choice 2 : Apply to trauma surgery.

medecine ?

Apply to family medicine.

I choose to apply to family medicine. The years go by, and AI becomes more and more intelligent. So, intelligent that it surpasses us. At some point, I realize there is a drawback to not diversifying myself sooner. Now, I find myself unemployed. I have to retrain, and I don't know where to go because AI has taken all the jobs. Even the position that offered a premium wage or already taken. Nothing I can do seems worthwhile anymore. I made the wrong choice.

Choice 1 : Start again

AI domination

Apply to trauma surgery.

I applied to trauma surgery. The years go by, and I have now built a huge real estate empire, with immense capital. Overtime, I picked up the ins-and-outs almost without noticing, and they end up being invaluable as everything keeps growing on its own. I'm now so rich that I don't even know what to do with it anymore. I succeed in life. And luckily I didn't choose family medicine, because unlike it, AI still isn't capable of doing what I do. I feel like I've found my purpose. I now have a good retirement ahead of me and with the pension I'll receive on top of everything I already own, in a few years I will be able to retire in peace of mind and enjoy the rest of my life.

Help the girl.

I got up from my seat, approached the perpetrator, and made him understand that he had been disturbing her and that he must leave her alone. After arguing for a few seconds, which was quite maddening to witness. He decided to leave and finally left the girl alone I walked towards the girl and realized that I knew her; she was a childhood friend. Despite the slight dread from the confrontation, I wonder; Should I ask her to go out to eat with me to catch up, or will the sudden invitation overwhelm her after everything that just happened?

Choice 1 : Ask her to go eat.

Choice 2 : Not ask her to go eat.

girl

Ask her to go eat.

I plucked up my courage and asked her if she wanted to go grab a bite with me, so we could catch up. She said yes. I soon learned she was also a medical student, allowing us to have in-depth conversations about our studies. Some time later, we got together, started a family, and lived in fulfillment until the end, where we enjoyed our retirement together. I made the right choice.

Choice 1 : Start again

Old couple

Not ask her to go eat.

After speaking with her for a while, we said goodbye, and I never saw her again. Some time later, my professor came to see me at school and told me that he had witnessed the scene and that my courage, determination, and especially my ethics were admirable. He therefore recommended that I join his private committee of star students, which I did. With the help of this committee, I created connections and channels, and when I finally became a doctor, I had all the invaluable resources necessary to go far in my professional purpose. By the end of my life, I had become head of an entire department at one of the country's most reputable hospitals. Unfortunately, I was unable to fully enjoy my premium wage because of the work.

Rent an apartment alone.

Incredible, I have my own apartment, all alone, without anyone being able to tell me what to do. I can wake up whenever I want (within reason), I can eat whatever I want, and I will have peace. I barely had time to settle in when, suddenly, there's a knock at the door. I opened the door and a young lady asked me if I would like to volunteer. I just moved into the apartment for the first time! I haven't even had time to unpack my packages, and I'm already being asked if I want to do something! But then I realize that volunteering could really help me later in my career. What should I do? Should I accept the volunteering opportunity or not?

Choice 1 : Accept the opportunity to volunteer.

Choice 2 : Refuse the opportunity to volunteer.

moving

Accept the opportunity to volunteer.

Without thinking twice, I accepted it. I went down and waited at the bottom of the building. We got into a car and the unknown driver took us to a place I did not know, and when I was told to get out, I received a heavy blow to the head and passed out. I woke up two days later with bruises all over my face, my hands tied behind my back and my body tied to a chair. I understood that I had been kidnapped and my perpetrators demanded 500,000 dollars to set me free. I remained in this kidnapped state for a week, filled with dread, the police found me with the help of my phone, which they had forgotten to turn off. For me, this was the end of my medical career, as the trauma will overwhelm me for the rest of my life. I had to undergo psychological counseling twice a week. It's truly a shame; I really had no luck.

Choice 1 : Start again

depression

Refuse the opportunity to volunteer.

I gently refused the offer and returned to my own activities. Time passed, and a few months later, I learned that this girl and her accomplice were caught by the police because they were trying to kidnap people by making them believe they were going to do some volunteer work. I was genuinely glad I didn't go, because I could have been kidnapped. This experience served to deter me from risky behaviour, which ultimately pushed me towards specializing in psychiatry. My in-depth study of the human mind helped me process the trauma. I had a good career, thanks in part to an excellent compensation package, and I'm enjoying my retirement.

Choice 1 : Start again

Old men

Rent an apartment in a shared flat.

I rang the doorbell, and my new roommate, whom I hadn't met yet, opened the door. It's a girl, and I recognized her immediately: she was my former babysitter. Time had changed her, but her eyes remained the same as in my memories. I took a cursory look at her to confirm my suspicion. Does she recognize me? What should I do? Should I tell her we know each other, which might seem strange, or should I be thoughtful and act as if nothing happened and start over, since the last time we spoke we were only five years old?

Choice 1 : Tell her that we know each other.

Choice 2 : Pretend we didn't know each other.

apartment

Tell her that we know each other.

She remembers! I'm not crazy. Time flies, and the vibe in the apartment is incredible. We became close again, and since our age gap wasn't very wide, we spent our evenings together. We learned the ins-and-outs of studying, laughing, and cooking together. Later, she became a nurse and left for another city for a new job. I was heartbroken, but I kept studying medicine, pushing for straight A's, and I became a respectable doctor. Unfortunately, a few years later, I learned she was married with children, which broke my heart for the second time. That's life, and my career ultimately brought fulfillment.

Choice 1 : Start again

Sad winner

Pretend we didn't know each other.

Since I decided to act as if we didn't know each other, I started by introducing myself as a medical student. She replied that she was a nursing student and that I could help her with her integration assignment. I said yes without hesitation, and she threw all of her questions at me all at once. I did have some background in anatomy and physiology, but when it came to the exact function of apoptosis, necrosis, and specific polymerases, I truly couldn't help her. At best, I could give her a few enzyme names I remembered, but that was pretty much it. Time passed, I became a doctor, and we grew closer. I finally managed to pull off marrying her best friend, and we haven't spoken since.

Choice 1 : Start again

Distracted men

Accept the offer.

I accepted the offer. I found myself studying psychology in the morning, and in the evening, I was doing on-the-job-training with this psychoanalyst. Furthermore, I was surrounded by psychiatrists looking to retrain as psychoanalysts and other certified psychologists. As a trainee, this was a great learning experience. I was immersed in the works of Freud, mastering complex concepts about the mind and the Unconscious. Thanks to this favorable environment, I made many connections, which helped me find a job later. As a psychoanalyst, I was able to earn a very high wage and fully enjoy my retirement.

Choice 1 : Start again

Freud

Refuse the offer.

I gently refused my professor's offer and continued my studies. At the end of my studies, I struggled a bit to find work, enduring the drudgery of the job search, but I found one eventually and earned a good living. Then, one day, I decided to go into research. Thanks to my team and me, we uncovered a human bias that had previously been unsuspected. My team and I became multimillionaires thanks to this discovery, and I was able to enjoy my retirement.

Choice 1 : Start again

Team winnin

Let the girl fend for herself.

As I turned away, I heard a loud noise, and when I turned back, I saw the boy on the ground. The girl had swept him off his feet with a kick, and he was now unconscious. As a medical student, I could observe that he had only fractured a few ribs. I learned later that this girl was an MMA champion; she really didn't need my help. Since we had classes together, I ended up working with her several times, and we became friends. This episode didn't affect my life, and I was able to become the distinguished doctor I wanted to be, enjoying beautiful retirement years.
