The end of CEGEP.

After a lot of hardships and sacrifices, I finally finished my last session at Montmorency College, but I still had to choose between becoming a pharmacist or an engineer. These two careers seemed interesting and offered a good salary. Which one should I choose?

Choice 1 : Become a pharmacist.

I applied to the University of Montreal and to Laval University in Quebec City. They were both great universities that offered great programs, and I got accepted in both. My family said they would support my decision no matter what. Should I stay in Montreal or go to Quebec City?

Become an engineer.

I decided to go study engineering at Polytechnique Montreal. There were a lot of specialties to choose from, but two caught my eye. On one hand, aerospace engineers learn to build satellites and airplanes. On the other hand, civil engineers learn to build buildings and bridges. Which specialty should I choose?

Choice 1 : Become an aerospace engineer.

Go to Laval University.

After one month, I realized that I was too far away from home, and I had difficulties making new friends. Because of my loneliness, I started a depression, and it negatively impacted my studies. My grades started to go down, and I felt hopeless. If I had chosen a different path, maybe my life would have been better.

Go to the University of Montreal.

When I started university, I realized that I needed to focus more on school and improve my time management because this cursory attention that I was giving my schoolwork really showed through my grade's downfall. When I started to put aside distractions and thoroughly do my homework, I managed to pull off straight A's, and I became more thoughtful about the value of hard work. When I got my diploma, I did not know what to do with my degree. Should I volunteer abroad, start a new research or do an internship in a pharmacy?

After years of dedication and hard work, I found a new medicine that will cure autoimmune diseases! These diseases are health conditions that happen when your immune system attacks your body instead of defending it. I even got invited to talk about my research at multiple conferences and interviews. I was really proud of myself!

Volunteer abroad.

Even if my family and my friends were skeptical, I decided to go help a small pharmacy in Mexico because I knew it would be an invaluable experience. I treated a lot of children with an organ failure or a weak metabolism. Our metabolism is all the chemical reactions within our cells that transform food and drink into energy to sustain vital processes like growth, movement, thinking, and maintaining normal cell function. It really was an in-depth experience, and it gave me the purpose to learn more about other cultures. While I was there, I even learned a little bit of Spanish. When I came back home, there were many employers that were interested in the work I did as a volunteer, and one offered me a premium wage before starting the job. I will definitely do more volunteering in the future!

Start an internship.

After university, I became an intern in a pharmacy and started to learn the ropes of the job. It was difficult in the beginning because of all the new words I had to memorize, but I really liked my OJT. I learned that a hormone is a substance created in our organism to stimulate the cells of a specific organ. Even if I was not being paid, being able to test drive the job was a great advantage, and all the knowledge I gained will come in handy one day. When I finished my internship, my employer offered me a permanent job at the same pharmacy because I already had a foot in the door. I also received an offer from another pharmacy that seemed interesting. Which one should I choose?

Become an aerospace engineer.

To become an aerospace engineer, I had to take courses in physics, engineering, computer science and mathematics. It was a very competitive field, but I studied a lot and got straight A's. After I got my diploma, I got offered a job to build airplanes for Bombardier, a big airplane company in Montreal. I also applied to become an aerospace engineer for the NASA, and they gave me an interview. I do not know if I have a real chance at this interview, but it was always my dream to built satellites. Should I go work for Bombardier or go to the interview for the NASA?

Become a civil engineer.

After four years of hard work, I finally became a civil engineer. I learned how to build buildings, streets and even a sewage system. That is where dirty water goes after you go to the bathroom. I also learned all the building standards and the safety rules of a construction site. I was really exhausted, and I thought that going on vacation could be a great idea. On the other hand, I got offered to do an OJT for a big company in Laval. Should I go on vacation or start my OJT?

When I arrived at my OJT on my first day, I noticed strange behaviors from my new colleagues. I knew they were withholding information from me, but I did not know what it was. After a few days, I understood that everyone on my team was competing against each other to get a promotion. I realized that I was in a toxic environment, and I quickly got sucked up in the office politics. More often than not, they undermined and hindered one of my colleagues who became the victim of their bad behavior. They took advantage of her and asked her to do a lot of their work for them. Should I tell my boss about this situation, help my coworker or talk about it with other colleagues?

Go on vacation.

I went on vacation to Brazil hoping I would learn a new culture and see new landscapes. When I got out of the airport, I realized that my wallet was missing, and I had no other way to pay for a taxi. I was miserable because my passport was in my wallet, and I knew that it was very difficult to make a new one. If I could go back in time, I would not choose to go on vacation right after finishing university.

Take the Bombardier's job offer.

When I started working at Bombardier, I became friends with a shy girl in my department. We were working with a lot of men, and my friend told me that one of our colleagues in our team made sexual comments about her body to others. The next week, the same coworker aggressively flirted with my friend when we were testing prototypes to improve the resistance of our airplanes. She started to dread coming to work when he was there. His misconduct as the perpetrator deterred the recipient, my friend, to talk about it with human resources. Should we go talk to HR to confront the perpetrator or quit our jobs to escape from this toxic environment.

I went to the interview with a lot of apprehension, but I did my best and showed them why I was the perfect candidate for the job. One week later, I got a call that said that they wanted to hire me. I was so excited and proud of myself. It felt like a dream came true for me.

Stay at the same pharmacy.

After accepting to stay at my pharmacy, I felt a lot of pressure from many customers and colleagues. I had to do a lot of overtime to be able to finish the tasks my boss was giving me, and I felt that it was not worth working extremely hard for someone else. I realized I should quit this dead-end job and start my own business to feel a sense of fulfillment.

Start to work at the other pharmacy.

When I started working at my new workplace, I realized that corruption was ingrained between the employees because I noticed some of my coworkers sending threats to others so that they would do their work for them. Some of my colleagues even offered me a bribe to help them with their work to gain privileges. I hated this hostile environment, and I resigned after one year.

Immediately, the flirtation stopped, and the perpetrator was fired. After this incident of sexual harassment, I enjoyed coming to work and quickly became a leader in my field. I designed complex systems and solved many problems related to the efficiency and durability of airplanes. After 40 years of hard work, I wanted to do something different. A lot of my friends that worked in the same field as me were teaching at a university. Others had already retired, and they were travelling all around the world. Should I retire or teach at a university?

Quit your job.

After quitting our job, we had trouble finding a new one. All the job offers required us to relocate to a different city or country. After experiencing sexual harassment, my friend was stressed to work again with other men, and she took some time alone to rest and take care of herself. If I had the chance to go back in time, I would have confronted the perpetrator with the help of HR.

Retire.

After retiring, I had a lot of time to travel and develop new hobbies. I often saw my friends and my family, and we talked about funny memories we had together. If I could go back in time, I would not change a single thing about my life.

I found a job as a teacher at the University of Montreal, and I was happy to be able to share my knowledge and my experience to students who wanted to become engineers. I used my income to start a new hobby, and I even adopted a new dog named Pluto. My life could not have been better!

After I told my boss that one person on my team was being mistreated by others, those who were taking advantage of her got a warning, and she got a promotion. I was really proud of myself!

After I started to help my coworker with the extra work, we became good friends, but the situation did not change, and I also became a victim of the office politics. If I had more courage, I would not be in this situation.
