End of high school.

After 5 years of hard work, I'm finally finishing my years in high school. Because of this, I have to decide which college I will be going to. This decision will affect my carrier path and the two options I have in mind have their own unique field that I'm interested in that the other will not offer me. Which one should I choose?

Choice 1 : Go to Montmorency College (Multimedia Intergration)

I end up sending an application to Dawson. Unfortunately, my application to Visual Arts is declined. This does not mean all hope is lost however. While it's too late to send another application somewhere else for the fall semester, there are plenty of different options I can take to give me the experience college would've given me.

Finding work.

I decided to shoot my shot and find a place to work. Because art is my passion, I already have a portfolio that an employer could work with. However, without any experience, I could end up in a dead-end job that I won't enjoy. What should I do?

Despite my concerns about working a job with no pay, I decide to try volunteer work as my last resort. To my surprise, it ended up giving me and in-depth experience, training, friendships and invaluable opportunities for my future that a dead-end job would not have given me. From this point, I could attempt to get into the job industry, or I could try to apply to college, the latter giving me a better chance at a better job.

My application to Montmorency College in Multimedia Intergration was accepted. I end up loving the program and what I do, I get straight As in every assignment. It gets to a point where it gets harder to take breaks. Though after working for so long, I end up not doing as well as I used to. My grades start to slip, and it gets harder to focus on my studies.

I take some time off for myself. While working is important, I know for a fact that I find out that I can't get any work done if I do not have the time to take care of myself. Afterwards, I manage my time in a way that allows me to take breaks while also getting my work done.

Misconduct.

I was put in a team for a web project due in a few weeks. While things were going well initially, one of my partners has started making flirtatious remarks towards me. At first, I brushed it off as a joke, however as we continue to work together, these remarks became less playful and more akin to misconduct. I told him to stop, however he simply told me he was joking. I told my teammates, and they said they couldn't do anything of it. What should I do?

I report the perpetrator to my teacher who, fortunately, kicks him out of our group project and kicks him out of the class. I was disappointed that he didn't get outright expelled, but I had done all I could at this point. My team continued the project as usual and still passed despite having one member of our team missing.

Work minimum wage.

Despite my portfolio, the art industry is way too competitive, and due to a lack of experience, I end up having to get a minimum wage job, living through the most unfulfilling year of my life flipping burger patties at McDonald's. While boring, even starting off with one job can get you somewhere. Having something attached to you is better than having nothing, after all. I know I'll probably get somewhere in life...Probably.

Unfortunately, I do not trust anyone enough to handle a situation like this. I don't even know if telling a teacher could help me. So instead of speaking up, I do the most rational thing and drop out of CEGEP, book a flight to Australia and change my name to Maurice so that I never have to deal with the perpetrator ever again.

Internship.

I am now in the final semester of my program. I am required to take on an internship at a certain company to give me the experience of working in my field of study. Unfortunately for you, dear reader, there isn't an actual option of where to go. Our only option here is Ubisoft since its conveniently already in Montreal. I will, however, give you the illusion of choice if it makes you feel better. So, where should I go?

I decide to become an intern at Ubisoft. Due to the on-the-job training they gave me, I managed to learn the ropes pretty quickly and the job wasn't as overwhelming as I thought it would be. However, it felt as though my colleagues would more often than not undermine the work I put in as an intern. What should I do?

Choice 1 : Talk to HR.

I complain to the Human Ressources Department hoping they could do something about how I'm treated by other employees, starting an intense back and forth conversation between me and the department that lasts weeks and ends up with absolutely nothing being resolved and HR continuing to read job applications they won't ever accept. I guess I have to sit through it until the end of the semester.

I continue to work, never leaving time off for myself. My grades inevitably start slipping even harder. I fail all of my classes for this semester and die of a heart attack on Christmas break due to the immense amount of caffeine I had to take to even have the energy to sit through each and every class. It's important to take breaks. Take some time to yourself when you can, or you might end up like this.

I put my foot on the ground and decide to talk to the staff myself, telling them my experience with working here and even threatening to file a complaint. The staff, however offered me some money to keep my mouth shut. What should I do?

I decide to take the bribe and keep my mouth shut about the incident. I am unable to solve anything, but the money from that bribe made me rich and was enough for me to live a stable life. I won't need to work a day in my life anymore.

I have officially finished my internship and have passed my program, successfully finishing CEGEP and getting my diploma despite all the obstacles I faced along the way. Despite being bribed I decide to file a lawsuit on Ubisoft. Ubisoft, being a billion dollar company, wins the case by a landslide. I end up losing all of my money and drowning in debt. At least It was worth a shot.

While volunteering helped me get experience I'd never get without it, without a diploma I was still stuck in a boring office for years on end, not getting the job I really wanted until way later. Volunteering was not only a good decision, but a fun one at that, and it will pay off eventually. It is still a worthwhile experience at the end of the day.
