Life after Cegep.

I just passed my last nursing school exam, which makes me officially a certified nurse. But, the study sessions are not over yet. I have to study for my nursing board's exam. In the meantime, I have to make a decision on what I should do next.

I’ve decided to further my education and I have to decide between UdeM or McGill.

I've decided to start working at the hospital. Now. I have to choose witch hospital I want to work at.

I got the job! They offered me a full-time position for two units.

Choice 1 : Paediatric.

Choice 2 : Intensive care unit (ICU).

CHUM.

I got the job! They offered me a position on the float team. This means that I’m always switching units. Now should I go ahead and accept this job offer or should I try to find another job?

I love it! Most of the people here speak English, so it's helping me improve my English. The school has a rustic vibe to it, which I appreciate. The teachers are awesome, because they give you the option to turn in your homework and projects in English or in French.

Unfortunately I have to withdraw my application, because I can't make ends meat with the bills I have to pay.

I've been wait listed. They gave two options: I can stay on the waiting list and maybe get a spot in the next few weeks, or I could withdraw my application, apply next semester and start working in the meantime.

It's been a month, and I still haven't been assigned a spot. I decided to withdraw my application and start working.

The float team.

At first, it’s great, but I’m starting to regret it because I feel lonely on the floors. I switch units at every shift which prevents me from making connections with colleagues. It feels like going to a new environment, and it causes me to stress and to have anxiety before my shift because I don’t know what to expect, and I don’t have people where I can go to and ask for help. I know I will get used to it, but I don’t want to wait because I know I won’t like it.

Unfortunately, this is not the unit for me. Don’t get me wrong, I love children but seeing them in their worst moments is really difficult to deal with. Maybe if I go back to school to expend my knowledge, I will be better equipped with handling these types of situations.

Intensive care unit (ICU).

I love it! This unit houses the sickest patients in the hospital, which means that most of them are between life and death. You are always challenged when working because you have to be on high alert with your patient because one minutes there okay and the next thing you know there in a cardiac arrest. The adrenaline rushes that this unit gives us is what I love!
