My-career-journey-as-a-nurse

Beginning of my career.

I just finished my three-years Nursing program at Cégep du Vieux-Montréal. I was not a straight A's student, but with the effort and time management, you could do things easily! Soon after, I proceeded to do the OIIQ professional examination. I passed and that makes me a real nurse. Currently, I don't know what to do. Either I go to university to pursue more knowledge and having a higher wage or immediately finding a job.

I decided to go to university, but I don't know really where. I am struggling of having to choose between McGill University or UdeM. McGill is an anglophone university, and UdeM is a francophone university. I would like to go to McGill since I want to improve my English, and having a possibility to work at English speaker countries. And, I would like to go to UdeM since my French is very good, and it will be easier for me to understand. What should I choose?

Job.

I decide to go working after finishing my program and passing the OIIQ exam. I hesitate between working at Sainte-Justine Hospital, a pediatric or maternal hospital or at CHUM, the largest hospital in Quebec. I have a bias, it is to be a pediatric nurse because it's my dream since I was in Nursing program, but I know more about CHUM since I did a lot of internships.

I applied, and I got accepted into McGill. I was accepted at UdeM too, I don't know if my choice is great. This university will make improve my English, but I have to train, and exercise more too. That mean I would have more work to do. I will be able to learn more English terms, that will help to know, and I could easily talk to English patients. Should I stay or go to UdeM?

Choice 1 : Stay and finish at McGill University.

I have found a job at children's hospital, there was a vacant position! I talked to the HR, they did a background check, mine was fine, and I will get an on-the-job training tomorrow. I finally achieved my dream, being a pediatric nurse! I can concentrate on my work and appreciate all of my efforts from the start!

I graduated from McGill University! After all these years, I got my bachelor's degree. It was incredibly very hard, if there were a second time or having a dead-end job, I would immediately choose the dead-end job. I became more anglophone than ever. It was very overwhelmed, but it was all worth. I can finally work outside from Quebec, where everyone speaks English.

Choice 1 : Job.

Choice 2 : Beginning of my career.

Graduation at McGill University

Stay and finish at UdeM.

I graduated from UdeM! It was difficult but feasible. Learning was easier and doing the task too! I very love this university, and there is a lot of superior education to do about Nursing. Even if I like, I have a lot of debt, but the pension helped to reduce a bit Should I continue to climb the echelon or should I stop and find a work?

Finally, I became old, and free, but kind of sad that I should stop. I graduate three times from this university. After all overtime work and homework, I can put aside all those things and let my mind relax. Now, I have more debt than my entry at the university, but I can have a premium wage with all these certificates! That was my plan all along, I did than on purpose. I can finally find a work!

After a year of being a pediatric nurse, it was exhausting. Seeing all these young children getting sick, make me sick too. I thought it would be much more pleasant, but I was wrong. I don't know if I should stay, working at CHUM instead or going to university to change my mind.

I dislike to work, and all everything. There is a lot of overtime, so overwhelm. I don't want know if I want to quit because it was my dream from the beginning. Watching on the internet some videos about children at hospital was enjoyable. You can make them happy, laugh, and playing with them to let them forget a little bit about their problems. Now I really know that everything on the internet must not be compared in real life. Should I stay or take a break? Maybe, it will change my mind.

Forcing myself.

I hate coming to work. My body and my mental health are starting to give up. Every day, I think about leaving this position, but I am not able. I don't know if I am going to be good somewhere else since I was there for a long time, I might have forgotten a lot of things.

Staying at my post was the stupidest choice of my life. My mental health is terrible, my body too. I got to take some medications, and I am seeing a psychologist more often than not.

Choice 1 : Break.

Go to internal medicine.

I did an internship there before, I really like it. They were a lot of different diagnostics, a lot of diabetics and a lot of blood samples to do. I was confident to be here. After few months working there, I did two mistakes at the same day. The first one was I injected too much insulin for the patient, that made him in hypoglycemia. This means that I lower is blood sugar so much from the standard range. The patient would not feel great! The second is that I forgot to inject the insulin for another patient before he has to eat. The patient blood sugar got so high that made him in hyperglycemia. That's the opposite of hypoglycemia, the blood sugar is higher than the standard range, he will not feel well too! And something happened, the family of the patient who got hyperglycemia came. They were yelling at me. I told them that it was because he ate a lot of sugar. The patient family decided to file a complaint. What should I do?

Go to urology.

I did an internship there before, I really like it. All the patients were calm and respectful. Mostly, they were wearing a urinary catheter. I remember how to watch them, and everything. Writing the amount of pee in the bag, etc. When I started working here, everyone was still friendly, and I enjoyed the environment. A few months later, I still like being here, but maybe, I should change?

Choice 1 : Stay there.

Choice 2 : Go to internal medicine.

Urology

Keep it secret.

I tried to calm the family and tell them that sometimes, it happened. They didn't trust me. A few days later, after this incident, I was called to go to my boss's office. She told me to say my version of what really happened, I lied to her because I don't want to get more in trouble. She told me that if I lie, the consequence would be worse. And if I tell the truth, I will have fewer problem. I didn't want to disappoint her, what should I do?

Choice 1 : Tell the truth.

Choice 2 : Play dumb.

Tell the truth.

I decided to tell the truth because I don't want to lie and have this in me. Making mistakes is normal, and after that, you can do it right. My boss was really disappointed. The patient could have died, and I would have more consequences for lying, but hopefully, he survives. She decided to take this decision for my safety and for the other.

Choice 1 : Fired from the unity.

Tell the truth

Play dumb.

Eventually, my boss finds out that I lied. She verified the data to see if I have injected an amount of insulin to the patient, but it says that I haven't. There was an evidence, and I could no longer lie. I finally told her the truth, and why I didn't want to keep it secret. She was extremely disappointing about me, and I too. She was furious, called every superior and even HR. She already had an idea about my consequence.

Choice 1 : Fired from the hospital.

Keep it secret

Fired from the unity.

I was very sad about this consequence, but it was reasonable, and it was better than lying, having the possibility of being fired from the hospital, and maybe, it could have gone worse... I don't know what to do what paths to get, but I have a lot of choices.

Choice 1 : Go to urology.

Her choice was to fire me, and I thought that it was over, and I could pursue other things... The family that filed a complaint about me, got me in court because I lied to them and one member of their family was in danger. I was the recipient. I told the truth, and was pleaded guilty. I have only one destination.

Choice 1 : Jail.

After years of working at this unity, I maintain to save a lot on my savings. Now, I can say, that I am rich! I can leave my job to do other things than being a nurse! What should I do next?
