End of high school.

It was the end of high school, and everyone had to make a big decision: whether to continue their studies or not. I wasn’t really sure what to do next. Nevertheless, I had two options: apply to college or continue on the adult path right away.

Choice 1 : Apply to college.

I decided to continue my studies, even though my parents put a lot of pressure on me to follow this path. It's a decision I made for myself, not for anyone else. I believe it was the best choice I could have made, as I didn’t feel ready to enter the adult world yet and knew I still had some things to learn first. But, I had to face another decision: which college should I apply to?"

Choice 1 : Apply to Bois de Boulogne College.

I decided to enter the adult world, but my parents were really disappointed in me and decided to kick me out. I had to find an apartment, but everything was so expensive that I couldn’t afford any of them. At that time, I didn’t have a job or a place to live. I felt really lonely and started using substances to forget about my situation.

I entered college, but I quickly started to hate it. The teachers didn’t seem passionate about their jobs, which made the classes feel even longer and maddening. The overall atmosphere was off. Even the students didn’t seem like they wanted to be there. I failed many of my courses because I stopped attending classes and started falling into depression.

I chose to attend Ahuntsic College, and it turned out to be a great decision. I really enjoyed my courses and found my teachers to be truly passionate about their work. I didn’t get straight A’s in every class, but I learned many valuable things, such as how to put aside distractions and stay focused on my path. I also met a lot of new people with whom I’ve built long-lasting relationships. After completing all of my courses, I faced another important decision: Which program should I choose at university?

I attended the Law programs at the University of Montreal. The students in the program were extremely competitive, and the courses were very difficult to pass. I struggled to get good grades and started feeling anxious because of the heavy workload. I was barely sleeping each night and felt constantly exhausted. In the end, it only made me hate the program.

I decided to go to the University of Montreal in the Psychology programs. In some of my courses, I did a cursory job. But because of my time management skills, I was able to pull off a passing grade in all of my courses. After 7 great years, I graduated from psychology. Now, I can apply for a job that will lead me to a career as a psychologist.

It has always been my dream to start my own psychology clinic. However, one major drawback was that I couldn’t find any other psychologist to work with me at the time, and even when I did get some clients, I often had to work overtime. I didn’t have any experience before starting my own clinic and hadn’t learned all the ins-and-outs of the job. Starting my own clinic wasn’t a great idea. It cost me more than I earned, and I ended up having to close it which made me feel like a failure.

I am now officially a trainee, and I am doing my on-the-job training at a psychology center. All the courses I’ve taken in the past came in handy to help me learn the ropes of the job. However, more often than not, I’ve rapidly gotten sucked up in the drama despite the office politics. It hindered my ability to perform my job well. I couldn’t make up my mind on how to find a solution to deal with all this drudgery and alienation.

That was a very bad decision, because the employees who were starting drama didn’t take my advice seriously since I was just a trainee. They even started spreading more rumors about me and said I wasn’t doing my job well, which had a big impact on my mental health.

Finally, after a good talks with the kind woman from the HR, I decided to quit the on-the-job training. Luckily, at the same time, I received a new job opportunity found by the HR representative from a company of psychologists who needed someone to fill a vacant position. It came with great benefits, like a pension plan, paid vacation, and a good premium wage. They hired me immediately, and I started soon after. I worked there my whole life because of the excellent benefits and the amazing team. After retiring, I realized I couldn’t have made a better choice for myself!
