In the middle of your shift, you get a call about a hostage situation near your location. A guy is allegedly barricaded on the second floor of his house, where his daughter and his wife are taken for a hostage. He claims that he doesn't want to get fired from his dead end job, and he wants to have a good retirement later. He also told that he is ready to harm the hostage if things go wrong. What should I do?

I am on my way to the house where the hostage situation is happening. Hostage situations are usually really dangerous because you never know what is going to happen. I once did an on the job training, and they told me to never go alone. I should call for backup, but I also want to prove to my boss that I'm the best. What should I do?

How will I enter the house?

I am alone, so I need a place to enter the home, so I can reach the hostage. I see that the front door is not locked. I also checked the back door, and it is also unlocked. Where should I go?

The criminal was waiting for you because he heard the footstep of your big boots entering the home. He has a shotgun in his hand and decided to end you life.

How should I approach this?

The back door is open, and I'm now in the kitchen of the house. I know that the criminal is on the second floor. I need to navigate through this home, and I don't even know the layout. The house doesn't seem to be rigged with any trap, so I think that I can walk freely around. I can hear muffled voices upstairs, so I know that everyone is not near me. I remember that when I did my internship, they told me to either be loud to intimidate the criminal or be quiet to surprise him.

Did I lose or did I win?

I navigate through all the rooms quietly without being noticed, and finally reach the stairs. I climb them up, and I'm now on the second floor. In front of me there are 2 people sat on the ground tied up with tape on their mouth and facing them is a tall man with a big shotgun in his hand ready to take action. In an instant I jump on the criminal from the back, put him in handcuffs, and I get rid of his shotgun. Next, I call my superior for help because we need to put him in prison and free the hostages. When he arrives, he was happy because he saw that my training came in handy, but he also decided to fire me because what I did was really dangerous, and I did not follow the correct procedure.

Is my gun needed?

I run through the house to make as much noise as possible while shouting at the criminal to surrender and to drop his gun without making any threats. The criminal gets out of the room looking furious and telling me that I'm as corrupt as the other officer, and that he is going to take me down if I continue. He points his shotgun right on me. Should I also pull out my gun, or should I stay unarmed to be less threatening?

A new path has opened for me.

I decided to stay unarmed because I want to stay nonthreatening, but I completely forgot that the criminal was ready to shoot me, and is very angry. I try to calm him down, but nothing is working. He finally decided to shoot his shotgun which miraculously get absorbed by my English booklet made by my English teacher Mr. Walker which I always carry on me. After realizing what I just pulled off, I run outside the house and decide to become an English teacher at Ahuntsic College.

Faster than his shadow.

I remember my time as a trainee and how I can draw my weapon so fast that my colleges say that it's maddening. I look at the criminal dead in the eyes and shoot him without him even realizing that my gun is out. I free the hostage and call some backup to clean everything up. A few weeks later, I get promoted as the new special force leader because of my bravery and my skill.

How should I act?

The backup has just arrive, and they are heavily armed. The main officer asks me to be the negotiator. I am really stressed because I have never done that job, but I'm really honored to do it. I put on the headset, and I could hear the criminal talking. He seems really angry and doesn't want to cooperate. Should I also become aggressive, or should I stay calm?

This is a messy mistake.

I raise my voice and I explain to the criminal that if he does not release the hostages, we are going to go in. He continues and refuses to let go. I start to insult him because I want to destroy his confidence, but that just seem to make him angrier. He tells me that I should not have acted that way, and to punish me, he's going to kill the hostage. After killing them, my boss fires me because what I did was really stupid.

Should I accept?

By staying composed, I'm able to find out that the criminal has actually multiple demands to release the hostages. He wants a lot of furniture from IKEA. I say to him that those demands are really inaccessible, but he replies that this is what he wants and if we do not comply, we know what is going to happen. Should I give him what he asks for, or I should bluff?

High risk, high reward.

I decide to lie about the fact that we brought him his furniture. I ask the criminal to get out of the house, and he will be able to claim his furniture. He seems suspicious because he doesn't know if he should believe me, but he still gets out of the house. As soon as he gets out, everyone jumps on him and put him in handcuffs. At that moment, I realize that I just pulled off the best negotiation ever.

Nobody will believe us.

Like he demanded, we brought him his furniture. The criminal seems really happy, and decide to exit the house with all his furniture in hand. Right behind him are his daughter and wife, which all seem to look super happy. One officer rushes to the ladies to ask if they are alright. They laugh at us because this was all just a stunt to obtain free furniture. The criminal mention that he was ready to do anything because inflation is too high these days. The family leaves in their car with a big smile on their face. I'm speechless, and the other officers are also in shock. We finally started laughing together and took a break at the nearest Tim Hortons to let the pressure go down.
